The Clough era can be neatly divided into ton segments.

Part 1 - professing he prefers a small squad, having an initial impact, dragging us up the league after the Weir disaster, cup runs and just missing out on the play offs.

Part 2 - increased expectation, fell out with plenty, built a huge squad of crocks and little ‘uns, nightmare play offs where we had a central defensive pairing of Alcock and McEveley and lost on aggregate to Swindon.

Good Cup runs but he really lost the plot that pre-season.

That second season still haunts me. Home defeats against Fleetwood, Crewe and Peterborough going into the final month and winning none of the last 5 games.

Going out to Swindon in the play-offs barely even registered by then. We seemed defeated long before.

Clough signing his Derby old boys and having “Our Simon” drive up the A1 to look at players didn’t help.

He was also cautious as fuck. I think he’s like a lower league Big Sam. Great when you need to go back to basics, but shocking when he actually needs to move and improve.

Adkins was the wrong man at the wrong time. His downfall was putting faith in the cunts that we were laboured with. Wilder took care to that.

In a weird way Wilder benefited from Adkins’ misfortune. NA was stuck with loads of crap in contract that he couldn’t shift. CW a year later to shift some deadwood and of course benefitted from NA’s one meaningful signing, Billy! Sometimes timing can be part of it.
