The pedant in me reckons Rawtenstall is more Blackburn. As is Haslingden. Clayton-le-Moors a toss up.

This is a great game.
If I'm ceding places I've not actually claimed in honour of the Claret and Blue, then I'm having Bacup too.

Rawtenstall is based upon empirical evidence in their Antique dealers, market and adjacent food stalls and brewery tap. Come at me.

Did a lot of work with a company based in Haslingden/Rawtenstall late 90's when Blackburn were decent, so seemed more of them.

They used to put me up at the local swanky hotel - The Dunkenhalgh - which was a regular haunt for their stars of the time such as Tim Flowers( decent guy) and Tim Sherwood (massive fanny).

Yes, though Burnley haven't actually played at Blackburn yet this season, but they have played at both Welsh clubs, probably the most awkward Championship trip for northern fans, so they deserve a lot of credit. Coincidentally those factors all apply to us this season as well so credit to travelling Blades too of course.
given the reality of the economy tomorrow is our first away game, travelling up for home games from london is proving too expensive tbh. hats off to all away fans from all clubs bar one.

Sunderland always have a good away support. We're quite lucky, being around the centre of the country. Must be a nightmare for Sunderland, Swansea and Norwich fans.

I heard Wednesday's average away support is 30,000. The one who can't get into grounds just form human owls and hoot over the walls.

Sky have changed Millwall away in the league to 12.30 now, should make getting to and home from London easier.....unless RMT decide to strike again....

Our away support has never been great and probably never will, it has its moments but in comparison to the home support in the last 15plus years it's average at best. Any other similar sized club near us travel better away, them, forest, boro, wolves, leicester then go as far as clubs like Norwich who filled the lower tier again this year, we'd never ever take that amount to them for a championship game in October or whenever it was. Birmingham always travel in bigger numbers to us than we do them too. Fair play to anyone that goes all the time though.

In fairness, those places (including south barnsley) are absolute shitholes and I'd definitely want to get away as often as possible. Meanwhile Sheffield is super and many of us enjoy pursuing the myriad of opportunities available to us and denied to people from those shitholes.

I read the poem up to this line;
'and bum fluffs where thick stone island just to prove their hard'
If you're going to write poetry, do it in a way that makes it readable without a grimacing face!

our away support could and should really be 2nd in championship, only Sunderland should be taking more away. Especially as we are where we are in league playing like we are. I never understand how we regularly get 25/26k home fans but take less than 2k away fans on average. And yes Burnley’s support is actually unreal considering amount of people living there
ive thought exactly same 22k season ticket holders and we hardly ever sell out away tickets its a strange one mind hasnt been helped by stupid long distance away fixtures midweek unbelievable that efl dont look at that before fixtures come out

As I see it we've had all the low allocation and difficult away trips with the exception of Reading.

Reading - allocation 2,300 but will be less than that, particularly if it's moved for the cup
Rotherham - allocation 2,500 and will sell out
Millwall - up to 4,000 but with it now being on Sky it'll be 1,500-2,000
Blackburn - allocation just under 4,000 and will probably sell most of that if not all
Sunderland - allocation 3,000 and we'll probably sell out
Norwich - allocation 2,500 and I'd expect that we'll sell out
Burnley - allocation 2,400 and we will sell out unless we've dropped off a cliff
Huddersfield - allocation 4,000 and we will sell out (unless we've choked). Clashes with the FA Cup semis...
Birmingham - allocation 3,000 and if we're going up we'll sell out

We'll end up well short of the 3k our neighbours would average if they weren't shite but comfortably over 2k.

Millwall give 4k? Really? We'll take 2k (about the allocation on the top tier) no problem. Agree on the rest though.

Quantity v Quality.

On the quality front our away support is the best in the country. Noisy, passionate and always backing the team.

I take my hat off to all travelling Blades.

i agree, i wonder what the difference is between us and the likes of the teams you mention? when i first started going in the late 80s our home support was 12k to 15k generally (i appreciate there was liberal accounting involved at times), but we now have more than double the attendances at home. the hardcore away brigade which is always minimum 600-800 regardless hasn't seemed to grow.

i wonder if the make up of our home support growth (which seems greater than others) is disproportionate somehow, with a greater profile of fan that won't travel away? as i say our average home gate has probably increased more than the likes of forest, norwich, boro, over 25 years so it's odd our away numbers haven't. come the big games we sell out easily so the potential demand is there but perhaps we're more fairweather than others.

For me our away support is very good, and pretty much in line with our home support, i.e. usually in the top two or three in the Championship. We usually sell out pretty much every Saturday 3pm kick off.

However, there are those few clubs who just seem to sell out no matter what ridiculous time the game is scheduled. No idea if there's any substance behind it but I've always thought it must be much more convenient for the likes of Leeds fans to go away from home, as everyone you know is a Leeds fan and so you've always got someone to go with. As a young lad you've literally got double the chance of being collared in to it, double the chance of collaring a mate in to it and then double the chance of a mate to tag along with. Half my mates are Wednesdayites (probably less), but I often wonder how much better my away day life would have been if we'd all supported the same club, and it would definitely have translated in to attending more games (I've still attended about 2/3 for the last 20 odd years).

We do live in a convenience society. In all aspects of life.

Traveling away is very inconvenient for many. I will never judge anyone who decides not to go away nowadays. I have a 15yo son. Imagine how hard it is sometimes to get him to go away midweek. It’s hard enough getting the prick to speak. 🥰

You can click your index finger about 6 times* and watch the game with commentary on a 50+ inch plasma.

Extended runs in the top flight help maintain away followings for any club with decent support and the knowledge that Premier League allocations are relatively limited.

In my experience in Newcastle, for example, tickets for away games are based on a points system and points can only be got by attending away games. So even if they draw Exeter away in the League cup on a Tuesday. Newcastle will sell out to people who hope to get a ticket for Liverpool away in 10 or 15 years time.

leeds fans dont enter the argument for me like wednesday fans they brag about their away following on social media i.e. leeds would have taken more blah blah what their forgetting is they are a one city team if sheffield was a one city team home and away would be sold out like theirs are

Millwall's north stand is reserved for away fans, visiting teams have the option of upper, lower or both. They don't put home fans below or above the away fans so the bottom tier will be empty when we go there. Rotherham had their small travelling contingent (350-ish) in the lower tier when they visited on new year's day.

The full allocation is up to 4k but as you say we'll only take the top tier (just under 2k from the Cup game ticket info) and we'll sell between 1,500 and 2,000 as once again being on Sky will reduce demand.

Might be the loyalty points thing. Last few years I've never been able to get a ticket so don't even bother trying any more.

Whenever Ive been to Norwich weve sold out
Birminghams travelling support wasnt great until very recently
Weve nearly always sold out at Forest
I can remember playing Leicester at home in the Championship and they struggled to sell their allocation

I know they don’t have home fans in that end, but I can’t ever recall seeing them giving both tiers to any club for a league game (even clubs which could easily sell it). Suspect for security reasons.

Depends on a number of things
For example, the biggest away followings possible in the Championship are to the Lancashire clubs, Blackburn, Wigan, Preston, Burnley, Blackpool.

Burnley are right on the doorstep of all of them.

We haven't been to two of them yet and of the three that we have been to, two of them were midweek during Christmas.

Blackpool sold out, but with United you never really know what sold out means anyway.

Have United only sold an initial allocation
Could fans of other clubs that get their act together get increased allocations

There seems to be a lot of this "sold out" nonsense around United when it's perfectly obvious looking on TV that another club got more tickets than us

Blackpool did sell out. I saw the away end photos of our game there and then Sunderland's a few days later. We both filled the same number of blocks. I was surprised by how many we took to Blackpool.

Regards away at Blackpool, our official ticket sale were 3,474, believe this is the biggest away following there this season, to date.
A week after our match Sunderland official ticket sales was 3,400 (strange number, maybe it was the same as ours but rounded down slightly).
Birmingham also sold out and took 3,469 (5 less than us)
Boro took around 3000
Preston 2,082 (this is their big local derby and I believe away tickets were deliberately restricted on police advice)
Norwich took 1,300

As I see it we've had all the low allocation and difficult away trips with the exception of Reading.

Reading - allocation 2,300 but will be less than that, particularly if it's moved for the cup

We've sold the top tier once at millwall since its been the new den, we may manage that again this season despite tv considering our league position. Blackburn allocation can be 7.5k if we want, and we won't be far off selling that providing we carry on as we are and it's 3pm Saturday. Sunderland midweek, that's 1600 to 2000 for us at best, whilst being top, way less if we're doing shit. Norwich 2k allocation only sells if were top, Burnley 2kish sells easy, hudds is only 2.2k too and Birmingham now only about 1700 allocation unless they decide to change that due to last match and we're up and they have nothing to play for. Plenty of those on the list weve only managed about 1k at over the years, but like I say we can muster some great numbers on occasions

Fixture changes and no trains have screwed us....mind you, there's always a way...my lad is driving from Leicester to Sheffield tonight to get the coach from BDTBL tomorrow to go to Millwall, then coach back to Sheffield and driving home Sunday....
When I first moved over to Ireland
I used to finish work on a Friday
Get Ferry overnight
Land in Liverpool at 7.30 , train to Manchester, train to Sheffield
Do same again on Sunday afternoon to get into work Monday morning
I know the effort your lads putting in 👏👏
Fair play to him

Burnley's support pro rata to a population of 90k is phenomenal.
If you assume we have half of Sheffield (300k) and a pro rata support like theirs , we'd have home gates of 60k and a maximum away following every trip.
Urm, how many fans do Burnley get at home?
