I'd normally have dropped Doyle for pretty much anyone, but fresh starts and all that.

Absolutely amazing. The first 2 people have Williams starting at left back! It really is true that the longer you're out of the side, the better you get! He was (quite rightly) being tagged as one of our worst ever signings last season, and now you want him back in the first 11?? Not a chance, Hill, McGinty, Westlake, Johns, Williams in that order for LB!

Interesting that Coady get's picked.

Is that just because he's from Liverpool or because he played extremely well at Alfreton?

Williams has also played a lot pre-season so i'm guessing he is in Weir's palns. Clean slate and all that.

He’s started practically every game under Weir and appears to be his first choice.
He’s more attack-minded than Hill, Higginbotham or McGinty and therefore suits the new style of play better.
I even heard bizarre rumours that he put in a “great cross” that led to a goal!

Not much point having a fresh start, under a fresh manager with new ideas and fans not being prepared to do likewise.
Besides, I’ve often thought he was unfairly scapegoated anyway. So there :p

Ye it's all well and good being attack minded but if:
a) you actually can't attack and
b) you're worse at defending

then it isn't much good what's going on in your mind! If the front 6 can't do enough attacking, I won't be pinning my hopes on a useless Left Back. Good riddance for me Sothall, sorry!

Ive not seen any of the pre season games so dont know what the new players are like only from what Ive read on here. He was the best attacking full back we had at the club Weir has obviously seen this and is prepared to give him a chance, he may well flourish with Weir in charge

Unless someone can impress more in the remaining friendlies, I think this will be the starting eleven against Notts County. I also think it's decent. A weakness may be defensive set pieces, as we don't have many who are strong in the air.

A bigger weakness is Doyle being in the side and also one of the subs.

Williams played well at Mansfield. That said im not sure he's the long term answer. I'd like to see McFadzean there.

I think that McMahon will start against Notts County. From Weir's comments, he seems to be fit enough and I'd be surprised if he's not viewed as first choice.

its difficult as i haven't seen enough of the new lads but if the team that ended last season is anything to go by i hope all 6 start next friday.

Coady for Doyle (assumption based on height), McMahon for Westlake and Hill for Williams could all improve us in that regard but the latter two would mean sacrificing willingness / ability to get forward.

Interesting comments from Weir re: the captaincy on the official site. To mention he's made a decision, but to not make it clear that Doyle has got it, suggests we might be in for a surprise.

Collins to get the armband?

"

I was encouraged to pick McMahon over Westlake by Weir saying "Tony was playing like a winger at times".
If he can improve the attacking side of his game, he should get the nod because he's the better defender and can also score from set pieces.

I think it will be Collins as the new captain or why even mention it?
Who has been captain in pre-season where both Collins and Doyle have played?

I am unsure we have a 'natural' captain in the side, certainly Doyle didn't seem too vocal unless it was one of the younger players he was 'having words with', Collins doesn't strike me as a talker either and I'm not too sure a centre half can be a good captain unless he's very vocal.

Higginbotham would be perfect as a captain if he could play.

I had this discussion with Foxy last week actually. I personally think we'll see Howard as the regular starter.

That would seem very odd to me unless Long plays horribly badly. We've invested a lot in Long already and everything Winter and Weir talk about suggests we'll continue to give young players a chance to develop. Not just for our own success, but more for resale value...

Agree, though at the opposite end of the scale you've clearly got someone like the very vocal Barry Robson, who came across as a bit of an arse.

A bit out of left field, but the other option if it isn't Collins would be Maguire I think - he was Academy captain as I recall. Very young, but then Speed made Aaron Ramsey captain of Wales when he was 20.

I'd replace the Westlake twins with the McMahon brothers. I would also prefer Coady and Coady to the Mrs. Doyles. Apart from that, I'm with you.
