Which would have upset me after his first few games for us, but unfortunately I think he has become a bit of a liability

agreed; He has got progressively worse and since leeds away I've not been impressed with his positioning or his passing. Worringly though it makes our already lean squad leaner at a time we can't do much about it for another month.

I have a solution and you might not like it but stay with me. Andy Taylor

Yes I know

however Andy's problems always seem to stem from when he is taking a free kick or corner up field and never manages to get himself back in time and could be anywhere on the pitch when the ball hits out net.. however we now have Andy Reid for the next month to take corners and free kicks. Andy no longer needs to go past the half way line

job done

Felt Taylor played decent in his last performance or two, before hobbling off.

Better option than Kozluk

Its one thing fans seem to forget, yes we want this player or that player in this or that position.

This Saturday, Speedo has to turn out a team, no choice, he has to field 11 starters.

He probably has doubts and worries about some of them, maybe most of them, fitness, head wrong, cant cut it, forgot his lucky pants, but he has to march 11 out there, in front of you lot :p

Bit of a thankless task at the moment, might only be the money keeping him going, or loss of rep maybe.

This is a joke right ?
There's no place for football related threads on this forum.
I expect a swift move to the general chat section for this thread.

His problems stem from a genuine lack of pace (i.e. none at all).

This CAN manifest itself by him being up field and not getting back in time but has also arisen when confronted by any winger who can run with the ball (i.e. most of them).

Taylor isn't very good at defending I'm afraid. This is not the best of attributes for a full back.

There lies the problem. Not for him a nickname like 'Iron Taylor' or 'Rock Taylor' but nice, squidgy, soft, fuzzy 'Felt Taylor'..... Says it all really.

I don't know about you guys (& gals) but I wouldn't want to be in Speedo's boots at the moment to choose our best 11 (available) for Saturday. Does he simply hope that it keeps on snowing for long enough for one or two of our injured players to return?

Taylor is the only option. Out of interest, i thought he did well when he came on against Bristol, put in some good tackles!

He is much better (as was Jordan) when he hasn't got the useless piece of bobbar called Quinn in front of him.

Can you post without mentioning Quinn. I even wonder if when having a ginger biscuit you start slagging him off.

I for one would be delighted never to mention Quinn but, whilstever he obtains an SUFC shirt by deception, leaving us with 10 men (at most - there are others wasting shirts) every game, then sadly he must be mentioned from time to time.

Ginger, by the way, is utterly irrelevant. Ineptitude has no hair colour.

Some parochial favourites have to go before this club can start to go forward again. Most have now realised this: I've been saying it for years.

Why should we ignore the fact that perservering with the likes of Quinn and Monty is one of the main reasons we are where we are. Neither are anywhere near good enough to take us forward yet both were given new contracts. Criminal.

It's hardly criminal - letting them go would have been the loss of two experienced Championship players who want to play for the club. Our squad is threadbare enough as it is without doing that. Monty and Quinn have their knockers on here but in most (I'm not saying all) games I've seen them this season they have been solid.

I think Speed knows they aren't the players to build a squad around but they ARE capable squad players. The fact that they get regular games is down to our tiny squad and frankly appalling knack for picking up injuries. Yes, the board trumpeted the fact that Monty had signed a new contract probably a little too much but the fact is that for everyone who knocks his contribution there are others who were upset that another player who has been brought through the club from the youth team was being shipped out and were saying the club had no soul.

For my two-cents - Monty is the sort of player all clubs need on occasion, someone who'll run all game and break up play against teams who can play round you. And Quinn for me is best as an attacking midfielder and not stuck out on the wings where he tries to come in to midfield too much for me.

I think a major reason for giving Quinn and Monty new deals was that they can play 30+ games a season. A factor often overlooked in our recruitment. Jordan (I think someone pointed out before) averages about 20 due to injury.

And both were mainstays in a team that came 3rd in this league (albeit with better players around them)

In my opinion we should have looked at who was a decent Championship player who would like to play for SUFC and can play a full season. Then signed 10 of them to make a team. e.g. Lonerghan and Wallace (Preston, surely they would have thought about coming)

Sorry Jos, I know it's all about opinions but many have said time again that with the likes of Quinn and Monty we are going nowhere, and unfortunately as each day goes by they are being proved right. I know there are others to blame and a clearout of major proportions is required but the acceptance of players of such consistently poor quality will only delay the start of any realistic progress.

If, by 'solid' you mean flat-footed, immobile and inflexible I'm with you all the way. Do you really not notice how these two are treated as traffic cones by half-decent opponents, home and away, week-in; week-out?

Aimless flicks and tireless futile shadow-chasing do not a midfield make.

I'm not saying these two are world beaters or anything, my point was that in my opinion for the club to let go of two Championship standard squad players (which these two are) when our squad was so small would have been wrong. I would agree that better players are needed in midfield but you could say that about any area of the team this season and for me the amount of criticism they get is disproportionate to their performances.

Maybe it is just me? Maybe I'm over sentimental for players like Monty who have come through the ranks at the club...

You make a fair point and it is of course all about opinions. My opinion is that neither Quinn or Monty are of championship standard and would think the pair of them are on at least 10k a week between them. For that sort of money we could get a very decent replacement, the old quality over quantity arguement I suppose.

this is bad news, taylor is worse than jordan, loan needed.

If we're able to get a loan in I think we should go for a quick striker. We were back to having no pace at all in Saturday's line up. At left back I'd let Taylor play. If he struggles, we've got Kozluk and Nosworthy can also do a job there (Ertl or Batth could play centre half).

I said before the season started, and I remain of the view, that given the dearth of creativity in our midfield it was stupid to extend the contracts of both Quinn and Monty. The error was compouded by signing Britton, who is a better player than both, but even smaller than them. This left us with 3 midfielders of below average height, two of whom never score and two of whom cannot pass. This was a recipe for disaster, and a wiser move would have been to let Monty or Quinn walk and spend the savings in wages on someone a bit different from what we already had.

As for Jordan, he has been poor in recent games but unfortunately the reason he was signed is because Taylor is worse. Yet again, however, a player who was known to be injury prone when signed has, er, got injured and will be out for some weeks. Given recent experience it should be our policy going forward not to touch players like Jordan and France who have a history of spending at least half any given season on the treatment table.

Astonishing I know, but their joint ineptitude drains us of about twice your estimate! Still, we had to secure the 'spine of the team' didn't we, Blacko?

I despair.

I'm with you on this one Pinchy!
We cannot and will not move forward unless something is done about those two - Signing Reid was a start but he can't do it on his own!
Unfortunately now Montgomery has the armband so apparantly thats the excuse to pick him!!!

Why does it have to be an excuse to pick him?
as has been said many times before Monty has been picked by a succesion of United managers, they will know more that most of us about what does and doesn't make a footballer worth picking.

End of comment from me about this because we've been over it 100's of times and I can't be botherd to repeat myself, but just thought i'd make that one point.

Good point, well made Sensiblade. Whatever my opinion, the professionals have got far more experience and insight than I have. I'd love a team of world beaters, but as seen by Man Utd's poor showing last night, even the best get it wrong sometimes. The difference between those at the top and those at the bottom is the number of times they get it right.

If what you say is true then yes it is astonishing and I to despair. It's no wonder we are going down with one of the highest wage bills in the division. Don't know who is responsible for giving out these contracts but at some stage McCabe will have to look in the mirror and stop blaming the recession for our current plight.
