Dont think 81 was worse. A club employee at the time told my dad that the players hated Martin "I should still be playing for England" Peters also it was quite freakish the way we slid down in the league table

If the players wanted to talk to Martin Peters, they had to make an appointment ...

They won a major trophy a few years ago - that creates a fan base for years to come, despite everything.

I admire them, but imagine if they'd faded into obscurity without their credit-card silverware.


PS - In reply to the OT I have to vote for this lot as the worst team because I was too young to remember the Don Givens nonsense. However, I do suspect the memory people have of that lot has faded and mellowed, especially given the bounce-back promotion season. Actual silverware - fancy that.

I very much doubt that the memory of 1980-1 has faded and mellowed at all. Not even a tiny bit.

That was a severely gut wrenching end to the season. We are talking about a club that until two years previously had never ever been out of the top two divisions, and four years before that had almost qualified for Europe and only finished five points (7 in new money) behind the league champions. And yet here we were dumped into the fourth division in the most excruciating of circumstances.

Things like do not soften or fade from the memory banks. Not in a million years.

Well that all depends if the referee, rules and ball came from 1898 or 2013 ? If it was the former, those from the current lot that were still on the pitch by half time wouldn't come out for the second half.

Don't forget the pitches of that time as well. In winter, they made a ploughed field look like a bowling green.

Had 3 points for a win been in operation, the table would have looked like this:

1. Ipswich 74 GD + 22
2. Derby 74 GD + 18
3. Liverpool 71
4. SUFC 67
5. Stoke 66 GD + 16
6. Everton 66 GD + 14

And we would have qualified for Europe....

I think I'm right in saying that this is the only time that the third place team would've won the league had the 3 point system been in use. It was a weird season.

As for me this is easily the worst team I've seen but then I'd never seen us in the third until a couple of years ago, never mind looking certain to get relegated from it.

When my son was training at Gosforth on Wednesday night, I told my mate about this thread. I asked him if he agreed with me that the present team is worse than 1981. He thought I had meant that I thought we would go down this season so he offered to bet me £50 that we wont go down. Told him that it didnt mean that I think we will go down as there are still 30 games left for us to to put things right. I do think that this is the worst team we have ever had but still have faith in NC to change things for the better
