Jesus what the hell has happened to Watford, absolute shitshow

Widler was a bonkers choice by Watford in the first place.

Completely understandable that he’d go there if offered it—decent chance of getting them in the playoffs, unlikely to be widely seen as responsible for the failure if he didn’t, always likely to be an easy and quick route out if it went tits up, presumably well paid. Pretty much a free hit from Widler’s point of view, and a way back into management at a decent level.

But, given Watford’s dysfunctional rep, why would they appoint a manager well known for public blunt speaking and, let’s say, for apportioning blame elsewhere?

In some respects, it’s surprising it’s lasted as long as a month.

If they'd stuck with him through the summer, allowed him to sell some players, bring others in and build his own team they might have had a decent chance of promotion next season.

Hindsight would show that keeping Rob Edwards might have been a better choice.

Wilder not a bad shout, but clearly he's not got them really going. They've got a mish mash of players and clearly some bad mentality.

I'd be going in for Slavisa again with a view to him being able to shape them come summer.

Watford have talented players, their weakness is mentality.

So Wilder is probably the manager who could knock them into shape over the Summer. Don’t blame Wilder for taking the Watford job, don’t think he had anything to lose.

His stock isn’t so high for the Championship but still think Wilder can pick and choose any club he wants at league 1 level. If Derby fail to gain promotion and they sack Warne then can see him going there in the Summer.

I really hope Wilder gets a long term gig somewhere soon and builds another successful team and is thoroughly happy

I love the bloke and what he helped us achieve. I’ve mentioned it before. But we lived in Oz for 11 years and moved back in august 2018. My lad was 11 at the time and has become a massive blade. Season ticket holder and goes to as many away games as we can. Adores the club

Now, we live on the wrong side of the Pennines. When he started his new school in a new country in year 7, he was desperate to fit in and make friends. Nobody supported the blades. They’re all of a Manc flavour.

But the success wilder delivered made my son fall in love with the club. It was so unlikely that this would happen and I was ok with it if he ended up a Manc red/blue if it helped him with his new mates and settle in a foreign country

So I absolutely owe wilder the fact that I have a blades supporting son. And the memories I will take to my grave with me of the time I spend with him at games and traveling around the country will be amazing, as many of you will appreciate yourselves. Wilder had given me this

He obviously helped build a decent squad at Middlesbrough and xg said they would eventually climb the league ( maybe not as well as they have done granted) but the Watford gig was a risk worth taking for him. Fails and it's only a few months but the carrot of the play offs was there.

His record before he joined us was good so I don't buy this right place right time only narrative with his success with us. He changed his initial system after a slow start and took a side that was on its knees 11th in league one to 100 points and eventually to 9th in the premier league. That's not just one good season or one great player dragging his side up with him

It's a real shame how it ended with us, but most footballing relationships have to come to an end, and it normally is due to things going stale in one way or another. But it is really sad that Chris hasn't been able to get a foothold anywhere since (assuming the Watford rumours are true) and I do worry that the final season with us completely dulled the spark that he had for the game.

Watford is a basket case anyway, but Boro was tailor made for him really. Big Northern club with a decent squad, who could have easily pushed for the top 6 under the right leadership.

I have thought for a while that somewhere like Rotherham would be perfect. Close to home, with limited expectations, so loads of scope to over deliver. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere regardless of where it is though.

There's a quote in Roygbiv's latest view from which describes Wilder as a "Northern Aidy Boothroyd". I think that's pretty much nailed it: Wilder's career is beginning to suggest that he hit upon some magic here which he's not ever going to replicate. It's a shame.

Northampton fans would strongly disagree his rise was only with us

He also won 4 trophies at Alfreton, before getting Oxford promoted.

Part of the problem is that as he's risen the leagues, patience evaporates, and northern stereotypes are just not welcome.

Football evolves though, and your options are to either evolve with it a la Pep, Wenger, Ferguson or slowly become obsolete like most other managers!

Klopp finds himself at an interesting crossroads. He needs to rebuild his team like Ferguson and Wenger did multiple times. Time will tell if he's a 'great' or simply struck gold with one iteration.

I felt at the time Wilder lacked the emotional intelligence to really be a success anywhere else, and take no pleasure in being proved right. His hard work and success, boosted his ego to a level it started to interfere in his ability to do the job and it's never really come back down.

We'll always have those amazing years though, and for that I'll be forever in his debt and wish him well wherever he lands!

I honestly think it's more about luck, and random number generation - not to ay that the very top managers aren't good - but overall I don't think they get long enough in any job to make a difference. 2 transfer windows in a season, often little money and (by definition) starting with a fucked up situation, judged by the football fan population which is generally a mixture of often just thick, and over emotional.

Which is the main reason I've been impressed by how patient Arsenal have been with Arteta. They could have panicked and sacked him a couple of times, but have trusted they've got the right guy...
