Just looked on TV at latest football rumours. Daily Star 'McCall set to become Sheffield United manager' The following item Daily Mirror 'McCall turns down Sheffield United to stay at Motherwell.' Only thing you could say, is one of them is correct. :)

Or neither are correct and he won't even be offered the job.

What's surprised me is how little people like Shield, Staton and Walker know about the situation - all in their reporting are simply reacting to what emerges in the public domain rather than providing any hint that they have any ITK knowledge. The club seems to have been fairly good so far re: any leaking of information.

A source I know working in the bookies industry reckons Boothroyd is nailed on. When I told him 'bullshit' i got the following reply:
"Stick a fiver on him......go on. If it doesn't come off I'll give it you back myself"
He's at 20s at the moment, I've got nowt to lose...

I have some good money on Jackett at 26/1 after being informed that he has been interviewed and was the favourite of Bassett who is conducting all interviews. He was the favourite before the McCall interview, however I don't know anymore information after Thursday into what Bassett thinks of McCall.

Ask if I can have the same deal! I love a freeroll.

He's doing WHAT???

I hope that's just in keeping with the subject of not reading into any rumours...

I'd have thought both Bothroyd and Jacket are outside our radar because of the clubs situation.

If we land either of these two then we will have done well.

Draw back is that I can't see either of them wanting to build the dynasty we all crave but they should get us out of D3.

Jackett = we'll have done fantastically.
Bothroyd = less so.

I'll echo that. Please tell me Bassett is nowhere near the selection panel....

Yeah we'd be much better entrusting the vital selection of a new football manager to a property developer and an engineer. Why bother seeking the help of our most successful living manager?

I think a lot of people on here have had their minds fried by endless exposure to Pinchy's Dinosaur Dave rhetoric. Dave Bassett has forgotten more about football than anybody on this board or United's will ever know.

Winter obviously recognises this and if he's utilising that knowledge. If so, I for one have much more confidence that we'll get the right man in than relying on McCabe's holiday chums.

Bassett certainly deserves more respect for what he achieved with us. But then it's not fashionable to defend him because certain binary-thinking fans will accuse me of living in the past. Better the golden age of Bassett than the current dark ages!

Christ, with the way things are going, Bassett might end up offering himself the job. Mind, he'd probably turn it down as well.

I'm assuming Bassett was used in the early rounds to establish whether any of the candidates needed him to answer their phone or handle all the paperwork. Anyone that answered 'yes' was not invited to a 2nd interview.

If you were going for a job in IT wouldn't you expect at least one of the interview panel to be an IT person?
Would you be happy to be treated by a doctor who was interviewed for the job only by a Carpet Salesman and a Timber Merchant?
It seems to be a no-brainer that the best person to interview a football manager is an ex-football manager.

If you accept that argument, then who is the best ex-football manager to get involved?
Someone who has vast experience at all levels of the game and numerous promotions.
Someone who knows Sheffield United inside out, particularly in low budget, lower league mode.
Someone who the Chief-Exec knows, trusts and admires (Bassett signed Julian Winter for us as a player).

I really can't understand why people have a problem with Bassett being involved in the interviews.
It seems to me that United are going about the appointment in a logical, professional way for once.
At this point, I'm still confident that the man we eventually appoint will the best man available to us.

Because he is the day before yesterday's man. His idea of 'football' died a shameful and unlamented death decades ago. He is unemployable as a manager himself. His last role was as Quickfix Mickey's tea boy. In fact, were it not for the latter's previous abject failure and the prospect of public ridicule, I have no doubt that DD would probably recommend Quickfix again.

The club's publicly stated intentions are a change to the style and a new model of recruitment. How anyone thinks we need help from the Stone Age beggars belief. There are dozens of proper football managers to consult. Some of them have never been involved at S2 though, and that's not allowed, is it? Not in our back yard!

What's the betting that Quick Fix will get 6 points off us this coming season.
Odds on I reckon - but then I am not a betting man and I am a complete pessimist for anything Blades related nowadays.

Heard today that owen coyles odds had shortened greatly,as had wally downes.
D`oh!
The former please.

Is this correct that Bassett is overseeing the interviews??
No wonder no-one has taken it up then, wtf is D.B doing over seeing interviews?
Hope this isnt correct, but frig me,since when has Bassett been an ambassador of football at bramall lane??
He had his tenure at the lane which was appluaded by most, but if true, then this is a terrible step made by utd.

Probably cos he is the only one that will do it for peanuts as he still has an affection for the club.

I am not sure many people in the football world give two shits about the Blades. I think we have a bad reputation and many people are pleased to see us where we are. That's not based on anything concrete - just summation from the way we are portrayed in the press and spoken about by pundits etc.

No one likes us, we don't care. But, actually, no one likes us.

And if this carries on,even our own fans will start to dis abandon us!

I think it's based, in large measure, on what is perceived by other clubs as a consistently horrible scrappy, scruffy, hoofy style of play. I agree with them. I don't like us either!
