Good post TF.
In the past whenever I heard that "SUFC as a club will always be gritty hard-working and robust" I'd shake my head and despair. I couldn't see how a club could change it's personnel, from backroom to pitch, and still have the same qualities and yet lack of quality.
Now, I'm not sure I'll ever see a side who will pass for 90 minutes in a style akin to Arsenal. And at 29 years old, I'd hope I've got a couple of decades left in me at least. Oh, we get the odd 45 minutes of passing football mingled in with the direct and hardworking norm, but it's quite rare no matter the manager or players.
I'll probably get shot down for this, but the people to blame for this are the fans. As Sheffield United supporters used to the Bassetts and Warnocks of this world, we get on our feet for every full blooded tackle, shout for the player to get the ball forward quickly and cheer when a player chases down a lost cause. A stray pass (no matter the player) is met with groundwide grumbles and Lord forgive a player who bottles a tackle.
There have been brief stints of managers who like a bit more fluidity; Kendal and Spackman stick out in recent years, but even then we played with an element of directness, whether it be based on percentages or pacey wide play. And neither manager lasted long for whatever reason.
I think the key is performances like the two playoff semi legs against Preston. A nice balance, high tempo, hard tackles and spells of controlled passing. It appeases all supporters who visit Bramall Lane and will hopefully lead to a bit of success.
