Have trouble attracting QUALITY players to BDTBL ?

Is it the style of play ?
Is it the lack of ambition ?
or is it sumat else ?

I'd say lack of ambition, wages and the fact our manager doesn't sit in when there interviewed

We pay the highest wages in the league if you don't include the ones who have come down last season.
Lack of ambition? What like signing a new forward for £3 Million.

If you want a real answer to your question it is because there isn't that much quality about. What quality there is also attract Premiership clubs which obviously we can't compete with.

What quality players do you think we've missed out on?

How do you define quality? Well known established players? I think this is what it boils down to. Bunn & Treacy to name two so far have shown proven quality but aren't established players.

We went for Surman who went to Wolves and who can blame him, we couldn't keep hold of Halford and he went the same way. Lita managed to get another 5K out of a Championship team so who can blame him, Smith wants to stay down South etc.

It could be the pig sty, even though it's the other side of the city, shit spreads ;)

Other than that, it may just be that we haven't proved ourselves to people just yet, it could be the way we sell players that seem to make a difference......I got no idea. Santos made a few good points though :)

Yep, we have a nightmare getting big players to the Lane. Beattie, Speed, Ehiogu, Sun and numerous others... not to mention Ched Evans.

Back to the burger van with you BB.

Boro were supposedly interested and he didn't seem that bothered about moving up there!

Yeah cause that's boro. I'd sooner go to Leeds :D

Ched Evans - Big name? naaaaaa. Good potential though

The others (bar Sun) was brought in by Robson too.... I think that was the main reason to them coming.

This is one chucked up quite often. We just cannot attract quality players! The same people are the ones who also complain about all our best players leaving, generally to clubs in the PL!

So, we don't sign any quality players, but sell all our best players, players that other clubs in the PL obviously think are quality! We've got a coaching staff to rival anything Arsenal, Barcelona, Man Utd and others have to offer. No, hang on I forgot, they're all 'cheap as chips' as well. It's all a mystery, it really is!

Relatively big name yes. Could have gone to a number of other clubs. Chose us.

SUFC supporters have a persecution/inferiority complex that can rival any other in the country.

One thing that's a bit strange is the lack of foreigners at the Lane. The ones we do seem to get seem to come due to our links with foreign clubs or countries - and none of them have been a success. The trialists seem often to be almost randomly taken on, wrong age, wrong type of players, wrong positions etc.

I think Blackwell prefers to sign British, and McCabe also hinted at this, saying we'd probably look abroad more if we get into the Premiership.

You beat me to that!! You're forgetting Naysmith, Hendrie, Hulse, Stead.

We have "signed " quality players .

We also have the knack of turning quality players in to kak rather than Kaka . ( with a few exceptions)

I shouldn't think that most people would have argued with the signings of Howard and Hendie at the time but they seam to have gone backwards.

It could be coaching, style of play , quality around them etc but it could be that they're just not blades type players.

I think Blades love a scrapper, a "get stuck in" type player . Whole hearted ,perhaps not the best technically but a blade non the less.

Of course we all love discovering( or re discovering) a talent as well - Cockerill, Brown for e.g . But they have to have the former and the latter.

Perhaps BDTBL is just not furtile soil for the "quality "type player in one sense, but the best place in the world for players with other more robust qualities.

Boils down to a cultural thing - Personally i like it as it is , Every so often a gem is discovered and we enjoy it whilst it lasts

Good post TF.

In the past whenever I heard that "SUFC as a club will always be gritty hard-working and robust" I'd shake my head and despair. I couldn't see how a club could change it's personnel, from backroom to pitch, and still have the same qualities and yet lack of quality.

Now, I'm not sure I'll ever see a side who will pass for 90 minutes in a style akin to Arsenal. And at 29 years old, I'd hope I've got a couple of decades left in me at least. Oh, we get the odd 45 minutes of passing football mingled in with the direct and hardworking norm, but it's quite rare no matter the manager or players.

I'll probably get shot down for this, but the people to blame for this are the fans. As Sheffield United supporters used to the Bassetts and Warnocks of this world, we get on our feet for every full blooded tackle, shout for the player to get the ball forward quickly and cheer when a player chases down a lost cause. A stray pass (no matter the player) is met with groundwide grumbles and Lord forgive a player who bottles a tackle.

There have been brief stints of managers who like a bit more fluidity; Kendal and Spackman stick out in recent years, but even then we played with an element of directness, whether it be based on percentages or pacey wide play. And neither manager lasted long for whatever reason.

I think the key is performances like the two playoff semi legs against Preston. A nice balance, high tempo, hard tackles and spells of controlled passing. It appeases all supporters who visit Bramall Lane and will hopefully lead to a bit of success.

Blackie would no doubt love to sign decent foriegners, however i don't think we have a strong International Scouting network (something NW raised when we went up).

Personnally I don't care where players come from as long as they play for the shirt and play/ behave in a manner that is fitting to being an English sportsman ... so that rules out signing Drogba, Diouf, Adebayor et al

Agree with this post. We are very quick to show our feelings about a player who trys to slow things down/pass accross the pitch and not forward or miss a pass. Sometimes a player who shows no class is loved more than a player who attempts to pass but fails.

Patience is required from the fans, however, for me the problem is more down to the manager and the players he earmarks, the board and the wages they are willing to offer.
