Why Bramall Lane?

Was just wondering why the ground is called Bramall Lane. Any reason why this was chosen instead of Shoreham street, John street or Cherry street?

Probably cos the Bramhall family had a daughter who was sh@gging a town councillor in charge of naming streets back then, or they were just big massive Blades.

The Bramhall family owned the Railway hotel and what is now the Sheaf House. Not sure what the street was called before though.

It's an interesting one. The main stand/offices/pavilion have always been on Cherry Street. The popular end of the ground has generally been on Shoreham Street. Logically the ground would be called Cherry Street, but I think the moniker Bramall Lane was used simply because it was the major road and would be more known.

'The land, which he described as having few natural defects, was situated on Bramall Lane, which had taken it's name from the file manufacturing Bramhall family who had lived in the White House which used to be situated on land adjacent to what is now Cherry Street. The modern spelling of the name "Bramall" had generally been accepted by the end of the 1880's'

The meeting at the Adelphi hotel to decide to use the land as a cricket ground was in 1854. Shoreham Street existed in 1841, but John Street wasn't built until about 1876 and Cherry Street until 1889.

Before the area became built up, a bridleway or more substantial lane existed, "country lane" typically. So as the most longstanding road in the area, eventually becoming named as Bramall Lane (or similar spelling), any subsequent development would have referred to the area as being that of Bramall Lane. The later built streets, usually straight, as per the Roman ones, were of lesser significance as thoroughfares than the main road, and best known road, of Bramall Lane. Hence "where`s that place where they play football ?" Answer, Bramall Lane.
Please advise me if you think I should keep taking the tablets and get out more.

Hello , finally I can reply ...... the original name of Bramall Lane was Whithouse Lane , when post deliveries started in Sheffield there were two Whitehouse lanes ...the other is still over in the Upperthorpe /Walkley area ....the name was changed to Bramall Lane after the family that lived in what is now the Sheaf House so as to avoid confusion !!!. phew ..glad I've got that of me chest ?.

It is called all sorts really.Earlier this season on our way to the ground some Chinese students asked us where Blammall Lane was.
