Thinking about it, our recruitment so far has been a little chaotic and there are some obvious issues.

We went afrer Swift early but then have since been linked with bo other RCM. I assume the position is still an issue but as we have basically got Lunny for that slot, unless we're just going to move Berge there again (but we're then still short on numbers to cover injury/suspension in midfield)

We obviously need a striker and would benefit greatly from an attacking midfielder.

And Chris wants a LCB (Personally, I think midfield is a bigger problem).

The money thing is odd. After Ramsdale he said there would be no more 'big' signings, which I assumed meant around £20 million, like Berge and McBurnie. Now we're looking to spend that on a striker.

I'm not sure whether Chris has spent the agreed budget but is now demanding more as he sees how short we are upfront or if he was lying about the money to try and get clubs to lower asking prices so me can get someone in cheaper.

It's odd then, given that we are a few players short, that we've only used one loan.

Where were these 'big Blades' when we were in L1 for 6 years, or even in our 2 year Championship spell?

We all know the names and avatars of posters who have been around a while (I've had spats with most), and I'd take a "we're doomed" argument far more seriously from any of these.

Suddenly newbie posters come on putting the boot into CW and saying we need to spunk cash like it's going out of fashion.

I put it to you. If you were a Wednesdayite with a season that is going nowhere and you wanted to do a bit of shit stirring, what better japes are on offer, than annoying your more successful neighbours?

The only problem with our club is we have risen from the depths of league one too fast. We sold all our young talent so there was very little coming from the youth teams to back up what was a decent but ageing first team that got us out of league one. Similar again in the championship players made the step up but were getting no younger. Repeat that in the Premier League but at least Wilder is trying all he can to get good young players in which should be a good base for a good few years. What fans tend to forget is we are still playing catch up to the teams at this level, even those in the bottom half and yo yo teams have had years of Sky millions going into the bank we haven't, it is that simple. We don't have a billionaire behind us so we have to have a bit of patience while we build, staying in the Premier league is all important.

I'm sorry, but if you honestly believe that then you are delusional. Beyond the starting 11, we have either unproven championship level players stepping up a level, 30 odd year old players struggling to keep up with the pace or shirt fillers who are a level or two below what is needed.

We currently have no consistent, proven or sustained goal scoring threat, and that is what will do for us this season. We had the same problem last season, and managed to get away with it due to exceptional defensive performances, Lunny stepping up, and us managing to have a fantastic goals/points ratio. Near enough every goal counted. But it was apparent to anyone watching what was needed, and to risk a 2nd season with the same issues was pushing our luck, and hoping that the 3 promoted teams would all choose to do a Norwich.

I'm not party to the inner workings at BDTBL, but if CW was told of the amount of money he had to spend and has chosen to buy Berge, Ramsdale & 2 players from Derby, and allow Freeman out on loan, over getting in one, if not two CF's, then the buck stops with him.

We have a lot of support strikers and no lead strikers. The closest thing we have to one can't last more than 60 mins, and except for a 6 match spell last season, has looked like he can't really be arsed with the general inconvenience of being a professional footballer.

In answer to your question, I have been a blade during the dark days of our history and i don't wish to repeat them. We currently appear not to have learned a lot from our past, because otherwise we'd be exploring every single avenue to get funds in to bring players in. Better to have a debt in the PL than be debt free in the championship.

We went down under Bassett because we sold our main goal threat and tried to do things on the cheap. We went down under Warnock because of poor recruitment and trying to do things on the cheap. Rinse & repeat.

Rightly or wrongly the PL is the place to be. If we were to drop down to the championship, the vultures would circle, the first 11 would quickly be broken up, and a repetition of our recent wilderness years would be on the horizon. Please don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise. If we ain't got money as 2nd season PL team, then we sure as hell won't have it as a relegated team.

Appreciate your strongly held beliefs, but short of a billionaire owner, our financial clout is what it is, more of a gentle tap, than a clout. That is the reality of our current situation.
Two questions arise from your post.
How would you spend the money we have invested differently?
Where do additional funds come from. (bearing in mind some of the projects I listed have yet to materialise)

As a club we are comparative paupers in relation to others in the EPL. Without any cash, or debt, the club is not able to grow as quickly as we would like.
You believe that incurring debt is the way ahead. I disagree, and I feel much better about our prospects with organic, sustainable policies in place.

This squad has been established on a shoestring. I don’t believe they will be relegated because of the character and spirit built into the side by management. Buying the best costs money we don’t have, so we rely on our strength to remain competitive. I don’t want relegation and I don’t believe the squad, or the management family do either.
Maybe my view is naive or simplistic, but as a fan since 1966, I have suffered enough. We are forced to try something different to remain at the top. I believe in it.

My prediction at the start of this season was a top ten finish. Nothing I have seen so far has changed that opinion.

reckon we have to be shopping in these areas. 20mill is a very big deal to SUFC and The Prince. We cannot afford 40mill players that also carry a hefty wage bill.

Great point and really hit the nail on the head. You only need to look at the Championship and see the money that has been invested across a lot of squads and players. We have completely bypassed this stage. We got lucky with injuries in our 2 years in the championship so this paved over the issues we had with lack of squad depth in both seasons.

We seemed to pride ourselves on our transfer spend and wage bill when we were in the Championship, bottom third for spend and yet we finished in the top 2. We were so smug about this.

Now we are in the Premier League and a few results don't go our way it is always 'THE BOARD AREN'T SPENDING ENOUGH'. It is clear and obvious that our squad is short in certain areas but just throwing huge transfer fees and wages at the problem isn't the sole solution. If we do spend £20m plus on Brewster, and say he is a flop come January, the same fans will have the same excuse in January that we aren't spending enough and will want another £20-30m+ striker in January. It is like an endless problem that fans seem to get fixated by. Never been an issue up to now in Wilder's tenure.

By the way I'm not saying a new signing or two won't give the fans and team a boost it needs, but fixating on this problem constantly is just absurd.
