That seems like an awful lot of players but if you exclude “Development” and “Youth” team players we are only left with 15 Senior players.
Let’s assume that United want and need to reduce the “First Team Squad” wages by around half to £6M.

I think we should be aiming to have around 10 Senior players averaging around £7K per week = £3.64M.
Supplement those with 12 younger players averaging around £3K per week = £1.87M.
Total wage bill = £5.5M

Based on these sums there should be no need for a massive fire-sale of ALL our best Senior players and certainly not the young players.
We’re not going to be able to ditch some of the players the fans would like to see leave as they’re on good contracts that they won’t improve on elsewhere (e.g. Collins, Doyle, Creswell)
BUT United could adopt a sensible policy of offloading just the really high earners and some of those who are surplus to requirements (e.g. Taylor, Yeates, Evans, Henderson, Bogdanovic)
Promote the best of our Development and Youth players and only sign new, young players who’ll fit into the pay structure.
If we did that, we could end up with a “First Team” squad something like this:-

GK: Simonsen, Aksalu, Long
DF: Lowton, Morgan, Maguire, Collins, Ertl, Kennedy, New LB
MF: New RW, Williamson, Montgomery, Harriot, McAllister, Doyle, Quinn
FW: Slew, New CF, Creswell, Philliskirk, Tonne

Some decent Third Division players in that squad and an awful lot of genuine "Blades".

I'd be very very surprised if Quinny and Monty are here next season. They are 2 players who board will sell to to raise money and slash the wage bill. Both will be high earners.

Has Philly signed for us then. I thought he was on loan from Chelski till the end of season. Not seen any confirmation. Only a comment from Mickey sayin he thinks a deals been done!

Bumping this thread as we near the end of the current season....

Surprised at the list above, in that we have still got some big earners here until 2013 - is the above info definitely correct ??

I make our squad as follows - expiry in the summer of each yr unless otherwise stated.

Goalkeepers

Steve Simonsen (2012)
George Long (2016)
Mark Howard (2014)

Defenders

Chris Morgan (2013)
Neil Collins (2013)
Johannes Ertl (2012)
Matthew Lowton (2014)
Harry Maguire (2015)
Andy Taylor (2012)
Seamus Connelly (2012)
Marc Warren (Jan - 2013)
Lecsinel Jean-François (2013)
Marcus Williams (2014)

Midfielders

Nick Montgomery (2013)
Stephen Quinn (2013)
Lee Williamson (2012)
Michael Doyle (2013)
David McAllister (2014)
Matt Harriott (contract unknown)
Jordan Chappell (2012)
Erik Tonne 1 year (2014)
Kevin McDonald (2012)
Ryan Flynn (2014)

Forwards

Richard Cresswell (2013)
Ched Evans (2012)
Daniel Philliskirk (2013)
Chris Porter (2013)
James Beattie (2012)

I think that looks about right and it puts us in a very decent position.
If we don’t go up we have the option of slashing the wage bill immediately by releasing most of the out of contract players (Simonsen, Ertl, Taylor, Connelly, Williamson, Chappell, McDonald, Evans, Beattie)
If we do go up, we could possibly afford to offer new contracts to just those we want to retain (probably Simonsen, Williamson, McDonald and Evans).
Wilson would have another season to assess the likes of Collins, JFL, Monty, Quinn, Doyle, Creswell and Porter before deciding which to try and retain in the Summer of 2013.

There's some big earners there who could just sit out another year, and who in my opinion don't offer us much, especially if we get promoted........

If we don't go up, expect an exodus of: Simonsen, Ertl, Maguire, Lowton, Montgomery, Quinn, Williamson, MacDonald, Evans and Beattie.

If we do go up i expect these to sign new contracts: Simonsen, Montgomery, Quinn, Williamson and MacDonald.

The others will go. Evans will be the biggest loss, but we can't sustain his wages.

I can't see Montgomery staying for another season of benchwarming so I would expect him to leave either way, particularly with Warnock making noises about wanting Leeds-supporting players in his side there. I also can't see Simonsen signing a new contract unless it's on a much-reduced salary: someone in the pub on Saturday was suggesting that his current deal may be north of £15k per week but I do accept that isn't the most reliable source of information. I thought at the time that the Howard signing was with one eye on next season.

I doubt Quinn would sign a new deal either, given that his contract doesn't run out until 2013 but I would expect the club to at least have discussions with Evans about a new deal if we get promoted.

The key to the Wilson Revolution is promotion...let's hope it happens.

Monty is a high earner and a bench warmer so get rid ASAP.

Do you really want to sign Simonsen for another year esp when in the championship? Remember what happened the last time we were there. We should at least try to stay up

Thats the squad left if the club doesn't renew any contracts due to failing to win promotion. Now take off all the remaining high earners and high value players that will have to be sold for peanuts as the McCabe family will not bankroll another season in Division 2

Pretty depressing viewing and shows how important getting out of this shitbox league really is.

at least it doesnt have Monty in it!

we know we're in big trouble for years to come if we dont go up.

much as Simmo has been better this yr, hes not worth what we're paying him.

Ched will fire us to promotion dont worry! and when he does, i think he might surprise us all in contract negotiations...

Monty's gone in the summer, promotion or not. He'll be a Leeds United player.
