Having seen a quote from Chris yesterday about which players we have he thinks could play in the championship, it got me thinking. This is all hypothetical - obviously.

Just how many of our players do you think could play, and do well, in the championship?
I think the championship is tiered now, much like the Prem. You have a top 7/8 - then you have the rest. I think there's only Fleck who on his day could play at that level. None of the others have shown that level of quality YET.

I think the following could handle the championship as a first teamer:
Moore
Freeman
JOC
Wright (in a 3, surprise package)
Basham?
Coutts
Fleck
Duffy
Carruthers (already has!)
Sharp

Then you have potentially Lavery after a first team run. Potentially you've got Ramsdale, Brooks and Whiteman up and coming. It has the bones of a decent set up. We'd need to add plenty and not sit on our laurels, no room for sentiment anymore.

We can't do what Wigan did and pull the team apart, you lose all the momentum and the spirit we've built. We'll have to trust in what's got us there but add the necessary quality to keep us there. I think it's a step too far for Scougall, Lafferty, Done and Clarke to be honest. Basham I've put with a question mark cos I'm not sure.

One thing is for sure, if we get there - there should be a statue of Wilder and Knill put up in the car park.

Sorry mate but to be honest I'd just rather think about who could do it in the Championship IF we get there.

As for a statue of Wilder and Knill in the car park......really? Well getting a team like SUFC into the Championship would hardly be considered a legendary achievement would it?!

If Wilder is thinking about it, I think we're allowed to.
And that was more tongue in cheek

Agreed. Fuck all won in January.

I believe of course, but we've seen too many false dawns to be working ourselves up about such matters.

A third place finish and another play-off disappointment is just as probable as winning the division at this stage. Let's not jump the gun.

Edit: OP did specify hypothetically, but still... Doesn't bear thinking about for me just yet.

I agree that we should be looking to recruit now for the longer term, which I have no doubt that CW is doing.............I've just read too many posts on here talking about when we get promoted and how we'll do in the Championship and it's just way too early to talk about, it's fucking January!!

If we are aiming for 'consolidation' and a fourth from bottom position then those players will be OK. If we want to match (what I believe) the ambitions and aspirations of our management team then rip that list up and start again.

Depends which part of the Championship you are talking about, it's become a bit like The Premier League now three division in one.

Top six ... Moore, Fleck

Middle section... Moore, Fleck, EEL, Duffy, Coutts, Carruthers?

Bottom section...(outside bottom three) Moore, Fleck, Freeman, EEL, Duffy, Coutts, Caruthers, Sharp,

I think that would be a mistake. Look at Wigan, compared to Barnsley. A completely different method of recruitment this summer with completely opposite results.

Many players would cope better than you think with good players around them.

It's hard to predict. The way our team is set up at the moment I'd fancy us against any Championship team. If we go up then I'd be optimistic, but I'd be unsure what to expect. I reckon any of those players could play a part, but of course we'd need some quality additions.

Why would you do that?
The way we play as a team will difficult to counter even at Championship level.
60% possession is not caused by a couple of individuals constantly nutmegging opponents - and neither is attitude and will to win.
If we can carry our football level through, this team will be ok! :)

A big part of it will be mental strength. Some in the current team would be on the receiving end of a few lessons in football, so it's also about how they can perform when confidence isn't as high as it is now.

Umm we have to get there first, still a long way to go just yet. Nowt was ever won in January.

Sharp, Fleck, Lafferty, Moore, are the only ones I'm confident about. Think out of the others there'll be some that surprise you by making the step comfortably, and some that surprise you by looking out of their depth.

Agana and Deane might have a sniff, Watford & Donny reserve players but you never know.

It bloody well would be a legendary achievement for some of us who've stood and sat thro the last 6 years !

Statues tho ? Fair point.

I am sure Preston, Wigan, Wolves, Brentford and the rest all had supporters who shared that view when they realised they were Championship bound.

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter what I think. If Chris Wilder thinks that the current squad is good enough then that's the most important opinion.

However we all need to realise what a gem we have in Wilder. In my opinion there is no ceiling on what this guy can achieve. He has the makings of being our best manager ever, that's not just based on this season but what he's achieved elsewhere.
It's imperative that if he wants to rip up the current squad next season, recruit and really go for a second promotion then I hope he's given the support he truly deserves. If he doesn't then his ambitions will be achieved elsewhere.

Have to agree with that.

Wilder is the key no doubt - he has taken a group of ok players and made them into far better as a group, and I think that could go a long way at a higher standard, if we were to get there!

I think this is right. My (distant) memories of the championship are that you need a lot of strong physical players who can battle, a good goal keeper and a couple of goalscorers.

Last time we were there, the goalie had lost his mind, Ched looked like a lost child and Cresswell's legs had gone.

We'd not need an overhaul.

To be honest though, I'd like to have this debate in 4 months time with 90 odd points on the board
