I have dreams of beating Wendy at home in 3rd Round :)
After the pigs "turned the corner" last weekend, there was one of them squealing on Football Heaven. Apparently, if they were to play the Blades 10 times now, they would win 9 times and we would scrape a lucky draw in the other game!

Think I'd rather beat the pigs at their sty, far more room for micky taking. As for this round, it's got to be mighty Burton and finally give them a stuffing.

I want somewhere on the coast for some good fish and chips to go with the copious amounts of beer I will probably drink!

But yes somewhere low league, somewhere new, somewhere with a traditional atmosphere away against a minnow that will be televised. We will still take a good travelling support and overall a win win for the non league team IDEALLY.

Why am I feeling something crap on the horizon like Coventry away again or southend united or Bristol city.....don't want anything like that!.....

Really boring getting drawn first and Bury or Cambridge isn't exactly awe inspiring. But at least we avoided Burton.

We lost 1-0 at Cambridge in May 1979 which got us relegation. I was there. Sad day!
sad was bleeding miserable , anyway wasnt down that day , we could stay up if wed won 8-0 at home in the last game, oh ok we were down
wed gone in a van around 12 of us remember being parked by the river and contemplating chucking myself in it, we were that badly hit by injuries I didnt recognise half the team

I heard this too. What a cock

how could the owls win 9 out of 10 when they only win a double everyt 100 years and have only won once at the Lane since man landed on the moon

I was there in 79 too, my first away game

Not quite. It made relegation extremely likely , but we could still have stayed up had we beaten Leicester at home in our last game and either:

(a) our victory over Leicester was something like 11-0, thus overhauling Charlton on GD; or
(b) Oldham lost both of the two games they had left after our last game. In which case Oldham would have been relegated.

As we only managed a draw with Leicester, we went down.

You could get your wish!!

I fancy doing Cambridge too

We knew we were down. There was less than 1 per cent chance of us scoring at least 9 goals against Leicester and about less than 5 per cent chance of Oldham not getting a point from their last two home games against teams (Burnley and Millwall) who had nothing to play for. At the game in Abbey stadium I stood with Cambridge fans because the away end was packed. After the final whistle I left for home with my dad and my schoolmate from Northern Ireland. I was told that angry Blades fans stayed at the away end for a long time after the match so Harry Haslam came over to them to thank them for the support despite dodging away from the stones that were thrown at him!

I think we are actually agreed on the chances of avoiding relegation after losing at Cambridge - they were very slight.

What a contrast from the previous Sat when we had beaten Charlton leaving us on equal points with them. They had a better GD, but we had 3 games left to their one and our 3 games were against relegated Blackburn and lower mid table Leicester at home and mid table Cambridge away - all 3 teams with nothing to play for. By contrast Charlton's remaining game was a relegation 4 pointer (as was) at home to Oldham. Just as in 1994 and 2007, you would have bet your life on us staying up....

The killer game was that 1-0 defeat at home to Blackburn on Wed 2nd May. I went to that and remember that Blackburn's goal came from a needless corner given away following a misplaced back pass from Kenworthy. Had we won that game, we would have been virtually safe with 2 games to play....

We should have beaten Blackburn at home as they were rock bottom and already relegated. Russell Coughlin was sent off in the 1st half for a bad foul on Sabella. We couldnt score against 10 men for the rest of the game. That night I had a partially deaf friend (who didnt support SUFC) phoning from my boarding school to find out the score about every 15 minutes. I half suspected that my friend was kidding me!

Indeed, so in typical SUFC style, one couldn't have picked an easier game we had to win to virtually secure safety - the worst team in the division at home, playing most of the game a man short.

And of course, we lost

If only we had signed Maradona instead of Sabella - where would we be now, eh?
