Taking into account the traditional feeling of pessism that surrounds the club but the somewhat surprising 'larger than a minority' level of optimism on this forum I thought it would be interesting to see where everyone thinks the Blades will be in 5 Years time?

I'm going for where we are now - Championship promotion hopefuls

Any advance on that?

I was going to set up a poll but couldnt be bothered in the end as my laptop doesnt seem to like this forum today!

If you'd asked that question 6 years ago, how many would have said we'd be promoted the following season. Never expect anything other than the unexpected with The Blades !

For the record, I'm with Lou, same as, although investment would make it interesting.

Depends on the manager......keep Blackwell or someone else of the same tactical limitations and we will be about the same as now.

Get rid and we might be able to push on

Still waiting for the great leap forward.

mid table in championship with odd flutter into playoffs along the way !

We need to find a manager at the right time just like Wednesday have recently done, dropping lucky that Preston fired Irvine, big mistake and Wednesday have more than cashed in on that and fair play to them, at somepoint we need to take advantage and make a gutsy call which i dont think we will do.

I know this is slightly off the original subject but I thought this was well funny. Quote that most of you will have probably seen on the club site;

"The next 15 games or so will really define our season, there are eight or nine teams in contention now but we have been slowly getting better recently."

(Kevin Blackwell looking ahead to tonights match against Reading)

He should win manager 'that is able to state the fecking obvious' of the month!

Considering we will only have 6 league games by that point I would say the next 15 games are very important Kevin yes

Id say we will probably be thrashing about in mid table, with the same old drivel being spouted by both sides of the glass half full/half empty brigade.

I'm going big time seen as you,ve said 5 years time. I think Premier league i honestly do finance has hit us and we are being cautious it will hit other teams like portsmouth and they will go into administration so we will push in to the top league in 2-3 years. All this will not be with Mr blackwell though.

I don't think I've ever been less certain of where I think we might be and that's not necesarily a bad thing.

If you'd have asked me in the summer of '71, I'd have said we would have been pushing for and, perhaps getting into, Europe. Five years later we were relegated (although we did flirt with Europe for a moment).

If you'd have asked in '76 after we got relegated, I'd have said we would bounce back and return to the top flight (indeed this very thought cost me rather a lot of money in "we'll be back in the top division before you" bets with various pigs). Five years on we were dropping into Div 4.

If you'd have asked me the day we got relegated to Div4, I'd have been worried that we were still in business. By '86 we were in the top half of Div2.

If you'd have asked in spring '86, when Porterfield was sacked, I'd have said we would be back in the top flight. Five years on that's exactly where we were but we'd taken a rather unexpected route.

If you'd asked in '91 after we survived our first season in the top division, I'd said Harry would establish us (a la Wimbledon) in the top flight. Five years on we were back where we are now and have been more or less ever since.

Today everything is so tied into money and investment etc., rather than just football, that who knows what the hell is going to happen at the end of this season, never mind five years.

For what it's worth, a bit of investment and a change of manager and I think we may well be in the top flight in 2015. I have been known to get it wrong though.

So just because Irvine was ok at Preston and has won 3 games for Wendy he's a tactical genius?

Mid Table Championship, flirting with the play offs, Selling our best players "for good business"

Average attendances 19,000

But still above the hapless piggies and their delapidated WC stadium!

Dunno about 5 years but I still hold this strong belief we'll end up in the Premiership lower mid-table eventually,

exciting innit?

Comfortably established in Premiership mid-table. Average crowds 35,000 in new look Lane.

After 4 years of attractive, effective football, Manager Coppell moves up to Director of Football. His assistant Sean O'Driscoll moves seamlessly into the hot seat.

Blackwell a distant memory; Monty made Captain of Arbourthorne EA after 3 seasons with the club.

That's my take too. I would add, though, that in the next 5 years we will have had at least one more go at investing seriously in the team which will as usual be abandoned too soon.

I don't know about that. I find their future harder to predict than ours at present.
