Can't go forward without a bit of self criticism after all...

  • Jamie Ward's performance
  • The insistence on sticking with the same formation even when we struggled to make any clear chances
  • The lone striker system
  • Cresswell determined to stay on the wing when he was our only striker
  • The horrific attendance
  • The certain knowledge that Nos would do something terrifying after doing something excellent

Chedwyn Evans

I'm blaming Speed for Ched's performance still. Don't get me wrong, he was very average, but we just don't make any solid chances for any of our strikers at the moment. The 4-5-1/4-3-3 doesn't work with out personnel in my opinion.

Thought it's was Cheds best game for ages. Didn't try and do too much, played the simple ball when he needed to.

Still needs coaching though and really needs to understand where to position himself. That said, he outshone Cresswell and Ward easily today

This is the main point for me. How many times in a game do we get one of those three-second periods when Nos makes you go "Wahey" and then "Oh shit, nooooo", often in the same breath? Squeaky bum time like you wouldn't believe. My ringpiece goes 5p-manholecover every time he's on the ball, because there's that frisson of fear that he's going to mess it up big-time. I suppose it makes it a bit more exciting, but it's excitement I could do without, especially in the first half when he's nearer to the Kop where I sit and I generally am concentrating on going as long as possible before a piss, so I don't need a potential bladder-loosener from Nos.

'Didn't try and do too much'
You're not kidding.

But we don't want him doing too much, chasing down the wings, backtracking etc.

I appreciate the jist of your post but it's fair to say we created zilch for him today. I'd rather he stuck to trying to work on the last defender than coming so deep all the time.

Ched did nothing, but he certainly wasn't helped by our formation. Neither Ched nor Cresswell seem suited to the way we play and I'd much rather see Yeates starting in place of either.

Having missed last year I've only seen Nyron play twice, but on yesterday's performance I could never justify playing him a third time. Football regardless, I couldn't cope with the stress.

Ward seems to be taking a leaf out of monty's book - his industry and effort were superb, but his footballing skills were sadly lacking.

My biggest disappointment was that despite Preston getting 8 men back all game we steadfastly refused to get anyone but the front three forward. I keptd hoping that after the hundreth time we pushed forward only to see Ched drowing in a sea of yellow that one of our midfielders would take the initiative and support teh attack, but it never happened. I remember one time a defender (Bartley?) got into the box and we actually looked like creating something, but even that wasn't enough to encourage anyone elsle to try.

Thought Wardy's effort got worse and worse as the game went on.

He's a right moody little bleeder and wasn't on his toes today. There was a pass that went a yard in front of him from Calve in the first half and he should have been ready for it.

Ah, can't agree there. I thought he looked tired later in the game but was still ready to run for everything. In fact I'd say the main reason he seemed to have a worse game than Ched or Cresswell was because he was the only one trying to get the ball and make things happen (although generally failing).

After about 14 months of nothing performances from Evans, it's time the truth sunk in around the club. He's just not very good. We need to recognise this and move on as best we can.

UTB

(he`s looks like alan shearer as a player, very simular in play)words from mr blackwell last season.looks more like alan partridge as a player.cut our losses with him,he`s crap.give the gypo a start and see how we fair with him.

Good thread Bladeybas.

That's a very apt statement." Didn't try to do too much"

I used to defend Ched, but those days are over. How many week after week of nothing can I defend?

He needs to up his game. If necessary, someone put a rocket up his arse.

He needs to make himself available. He has to stop hiding. He has to defend from the front. Yes, good strikers chase down defenders and they do it with the intention of making a tackle, not a token gesture.

Yes, we are not creating enough chances. But I seriously wonder whether thats because the rest of the team are incapable, or it's because our Ched is not in the right places to receive the ball, not making himself available or whatever else. He is due to be entered into my Oxford dictionary under the definition of "lazy"

He is inconspicuous by his absence

If he is good enough, he is old enough. 21 is a good age to be showing everyone what a good footballer he is. I suggest he starts next week.

As for the 3 strikers that played, for me Cressy probably did the most. Wardy was poor imo. Nothing seems to be going right for him. His touch, his passing. It's like he's lost his confidence. Cressy didn't do a deal either, but he won a few headers and put his foot in. Wasn't good for a striking three really was it?

As for the game itself. Overall, pleased and relieved. We tried to play the right way, but we lack in the last third. Two really good debuts. Clean sheet :)

I'm not saying Evans is a good striker but I fundamentally disagree with strikers chasing down defenders being described as good - the best strikers are the laziest bastards but the best goalscorers e.g. Jimmy Greaves, Pele, Inzaghi, Rossi, Lineker and within our context Keith Edwards

Pele wasn't that lazy. He might not have run up and down all day, be he did drop into midfield a lot.

Jamie Ward's performance.
Lack of Cutting Edge.
The strikers drawing another blank.

Overall, I'm happy with what we got. It's clearly a change in progress, so pick up what points we can until we've settled into the style we're going to use regularly.

The Future's Bright....
