I have about 30 minutes of highlights of us beating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge from about 1972 as well, with Tony Currie and Bobby Charlton discussing the game. Pretty interesting stuff.
Even more interesting as TC had been identified by Man Utd as the player they wanted to replace Charlton at about that time, maybe a bit earlier. In the end TC opted to stay, believing the board and their investing in players rhetoric. The rest, as they say.............
It's from summat on Sky about 20 years ago. Early 90s vintage Currie and Charlton are watching the game and doing a sort of directors commentary. Dickie Davies hosts, now there was a broadcaster.

In the summer of 1973, the board persuaded TC to sign a new contract promising that we would sign new players to make us a stronger team. TC agreed and we turned down Tommy Docherty's bid to sign TC.We signed Colin Franks who didnt get into the starting line up much under Harris . Furphy came to manage us in December, we signed Terry Garbett in February, Tony Field and Jim Brown in March. There were fans that I knew who were outraged that we had signed "3rd division players" and they said they would not go to the Lane again. I would say Brown was the only better than average signing out of the four we signed since TC signed his contract. Jim Bone wanted to go back to Scotland and he went in February 1974 Then in summer 1974, we sold our key player in Geoff Salmons (and TC's friend) which was very disappointing. My dad was told in the beginning of the 1974/75 season that TC was unhappy with the board for not keeping their promise in signing quality players and now wasnt against the idea of moving to a top club. Despite not signing an useful player to replace Salmons we had a surprisingly good season on the field (our attendances were not that good) and finished in 6th place. Then our results in the 1975/76 season were very poor, TC put in a few transfer requests throughout the season from September but Furphy/Sirrel and the board kept rejecting them until we got relegated. Woody also put in a transfer request at the end of January 1976 but in the following summer he was persuaded to sign a new contract after Sirrel offered him the captaincy and a new midfield roleEven more interesting as TC had been identified by Man Utd as the player they wanted to replace Charlton at about that time, maybe a bit earlier. And the last 5-3 game I remember before the weekend was around 1966 against West Ham, but we won that time. There was a home goal off a W Ham arse at the kop end.
the 3-1 win the following season on 29/10/66. Woodward, T. Wagstaff and Burnett (og) scoring.
Well done Darren, yep I'd blanked last year's game against Bournemouth and the Cardiff game.
I must be wrong about the West Ham arse home goal too, which I'd have said yes your honour I'm sure about that, it was in the 5-3 game . Don't call me as a witness eh?
Birchenall's goal was our first and a header cos I remember when doing Woody's assists and goals for FB about 12 years ago, the reporter said Woody had crossed from the right and Birchenall jumped like a "Jack in the box" to head it in. I liked the "Jack in the box" descriptionMaybe one of the scorers' shots in the 5-3 game richoted off a WHU player's arse and the goal was given to the United player? Don't ask me I wasn't even born then!
Never seen this footage before. Joe Shaw plays his last game as we lose 4-0. See the comedy own goal at from Reg Matthewson at 3.45 on the first clip
Joe Shaw's debut (wore number 8 shirt) was in the 2-1 home defeat against Liverpool in August 1948I was there. Second year at Uni.
Until recently, I thought I had been at Joe Shaw's first match. It now appears that I missed it by a few weeks.
In that case my granddad would have taken me to it. I first went Sept 1947. Thought Joe debuted in August 1947.Joe Shaw's debut (wore number 8 shirt) was in the 2-1 home defeat against Liverpool in August 1948
The info i got was from the Complete Records book (1999 edition). Shaw didnt play in any 1st team matches in 1947/48 season. Was your first match the 3-1 win against Liverpool or the 3-1 win against Preston? In that case my granddad would have taken me to it. I first went Sept 1947. Thought Joe debuted in August 1947.
My memory as a 2 year old is not good enough to answer this for sure, but my birthday is on 3rd Sept and it was a birthday present, so Liverpool if the Monday game was 3.00 otherwise Preston on the 20th.The info i got was from the Complete Records book (1999 edition). You can see a more recent photo of Gerry Summers at the bottom of the below articleThanks. My main memories are later, Hodgkinson, Coldwell, Shaw G, Richardson, Shaw J, Summers etc
Again, thanks. I had it in mind that he opened a sports shop with Doc Pace. About the only place to get genuine replica united shirts. I seem to remember having to make do with a stoke shirt. You can see a more recent photo of Gerry Summers at the bottom of the below article

My first game must have been Preston, 20th September 1947.
Thanks for that. Now will my memory be good enough to remember this the next time the topic crops up.
