There appear to have been lots of youngsters going to their first United match yesterday. I always love to see this, and hope that for lots of them this is the first of many matches at the Lane. If they were disheartened by the defeat, I hope they still enjoyed the experience, and that this will stand them in good stead for the future - it’s no good being a Blade and expecting win after win! Those who went yesterday have joined a small, and dare I say select, group: their first match was a 3-4 home defeat, and there are few of us who can claim that.
My first match was September 1953, 3-4 defeat against Blackpool, who had Matthews and Mortensen in their side, and United had Jimmy Hagan. Quite some players!
My grandson’s first match was October 2009, 3-4 defeat against Cardiff. Again, a match he remembers fondly, despite the outcome.
Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think there have been any other 3-4 home defeats in my lifetime until yesterday.
And just to confirm that wins are not always good, and defeats are not always bad, the other match v Mansfield I remember was a 4-3 win for United at Mansfield in 1979. The experience of having bricks and stones thrown at us as we left the ground led to my decision to stop going to away matches. It was many years before I went to another one.

We lost 3-4 at home to Birmingham on New Years Day 1985 having been 2-0 up.

I just escaped an attack at Mansfield by their hooligans when walking quietly away from the ground as a police van hurtled past me, stopped and an Alsatian lept out at me. Fortunately its handler took control of his dog.
No apology was given and I quickly walked on.
Can’t remember what year, I’d have to look through old programmes.
The only threats I had were from the police in those days.

Were you holding a bag with S.W.A.G. written on it ?

Off the top of my head I thought we lost 3-4 to Exeter around Halloween in the first League One season.

Turns out it was 4-4.

can remember us conceding 4 in the first 18 minutes against arsenal fa cup 3rd round 78

Whittingham got a hat trick for Cardiff,Stephen Quinn scored in injury time to make it 4-4,but it was ruled out for offside🫤

And Henderson scored 2, ‘at the other end’, I think. I was gutted at the time when that late goal was ruled out; but I have accepted it now - it means I have a shared experience with my grandson (3-4 defeat at home in our first Utd matches🤣)

We lost 3-4 at home to Birmingham on New Years Day 1985 having been 2-0 up.
I remember it well. Bob Atkins was a make shift left back and after half time (when we were 2-0 up) Birmingham realised he was crap in that position if their winger ran at him.

So he did, beat him every time and it was 4-2 to Birmingham by the hour mark. Morris scored a pen with about 10 mins to go and we then did pile on the pressure, but to no avail.

My only memory of the 4-3 win at Mansfield in 1979 is of Mick Speight trying to take a free kick for offside in their half.

My first was away win at York in the 4th Division , league game there was close to as I remember 2-3 ⚔️
We won 4-3. I had decided to stop watching us after finding out from the Pink Final in Manchester (I was playing in a 6 a side tournament) that we got relegation to the 4th.

In July I started a relationship with a woman from York. I was staying at her house in York that October weekend in York and I then decided to go to watch us play in the 4th division fixture at Bootham Crescent.

Bob Hatton opened the scoring (the late Cooperman ran on the pitch to congratulate him) but York fought back and were leading 2-1. Keith Edwards levelled the scores but then York led again. In the dying minutes Mike Trusson scored two superb headers!

The second goal was a Kenworthy penalty :-)

Remember that Mansfield game it kicked off all over their town centre that day.
A name that springs to mind that day is Len Degoye
