Just got in for the match today. Was just wondering everyone's thoughts on the game?

Didn't hear praise or grumble so don't know what everyone has said. Personally I thought we started the better team for about 20 mins and then was over ran in the middle of the park till they scored. Once we went 1-0 down thought we was the better side and deserved to score and then it could have gone either way for me personally.

Thought a draw was probably the right result as we both had decent chances. Thought baxter was by far the man of the match for us. That said I thought cambell ryce had a good game even though he had lumps kicked out of him from the first whistle and think that was why he ended up been subbed. I also thought Harris had a good game and defended well, just think he is possibly lacking a bit of confidence since coming back from injury as he isn't coming forward as much as I would like him to as he has a good shot and can pick a good pass/cross out so would like to see him pushing forward a little bit more not sure if this is down to confidence since coming back or if adkins has told him not to come forward as much.

Also heard a lot of fans praising long and although I didn't think he had a bad game I don't think he was anything to shout and dance about, I heard some one commenting on how he made a brilliant double save in the first half but if he had have been able to hold the ball the first time like most decent keepers would have and also think Howard would have.

Also heard a fee slagging hammond off and I didn't think he had a particular bad match to be honest. Think he does the job we wanted him to do and offers protection for the back four and isn't scared of getting stuck in and trying a tackle that a lot of players wouldn't.

I also thought coutts had a very good match and showed his ability he has, I know he isn't the quickest of players but think he makes up for it in his vision and technical ability. Also thought he held the ball up well.

I still can't understand why we continue to play with out any wide men and the one wide man we do play (cambell ryce) we play him down the left hand side even though he is a right winger. Why play cambell ryce out of position when we have seen he can run at players and put defenders on the back foot when he is played correctly and then to have adams on the pitch who could play and has played on the left and is his best position for me and still choose to play cambell ryce out of position and then try and play baxter down the right which is loosing us all our width down the right becauae baxter is drifting into the center of the park just behind the strikers which is where he should be and where he plays best as he has proved.

Ratings:
Long 7 pulled off a couple of good saves but also a few dodgy ones that I thought he could have caught or done better with.

Freeman 6 didn't think he was as good as he has been for most of the season. Was beaten quite a lot by his man but think that could be because he is pushing forward a lot seen as there's no winger which also means he has no cover for defence when he does push forward.

Collins 6 defended quite well but didn't really offer much in distribution or going forward.

Basham 7 again defended quite well but was beaten on a few occasions by his man by a simple turn. Don't think he has been no where near the player he was last season.

Harris 7.5 solid defending through out pulled off a couple of crucial tackles and distribution and vision was good.

Hammond 6.5 played quite well although was nothing special but don't see why he gets the abuse he gets.

Baxter 8.5 man of match for us by a long way ran midfield showed he can out a good shift in. Vision was brilliant through balls was good. Scored a goal put adams through a couple of times. Overall very good match for him.

Cambell ryce 7 played well got lumps kicked out of him all match so didn't really have the chances he usually gets to skin the defenders.

Adams 5 don't think he played very well at all even though nearly scoring and getting denied a clear penalty. Think he still has a lot to learn and think he will turn out to be a very good player. Think he needs to help out a lot more when defending.

Sharp 6 he is going though a run of bad form. Thought his work rate was there and he is trying. Don't think he is been played right either which doesn't help he is also goal scorer yet covers far to much of the field for me to be playing to his ability of been a goal scorer.

scougall 6 again effort was there.

Sammon 5 didn't think he played very well at all. He didn't hold the ball up and didn't create anything really. Can't understand why we subbed our top goal scorer for him even though he is having a bad run.

All in all I didn't think he had a bad game just a shame as usual we have to go behind for us to start playing well. Thought it was going to be different after the first 20 ish mins of been the better team then we dropped off again till they scored which seemed to kick us back into gear. Why can't we just complete a full 90 mins where we can say yes we played well and give it our all throughout.

At last someone who thinks hammond puts a shift in,Adkins seems intent on playing 4-4-2 it's not working as yet but he obviously thinks this is the way to go

Not a single yellow card given to the Walsall players despite the amount of fouls I heard while listening to the match. It seemed like they were targeting him throughout the match.

It's great that we are able to keep up with the big guns, like, er, Walsall.

We are what we are - a 3rd division team hoping for promotion. We drew away with one of the form teams in the league. Whether they're Walsall or Man City, they are one of the form teams in our division and were 2nd at Kick Off. Whatever happened in the game, thats a good result.

We just said the same thing, we just used different words ;)

Harsh on Sammon, thought he added a physical element that was lacking. Managed to get his head to much of what Long tonked upfield (in contrast to anyone else on the field till then), and a couple of bit of play out left won a corner or two. I maintain that it was a mistake to depart from the Sharp/Sammon pairing. Sammon does a job, and Sharp has been poorer since he has had to work without him.

Yours was sarcastic. Mine was serious

Mine was serious too. We are a shit third division side, poorly directed and poorly managed. If we were a horse we'd be shot, and probably rightly.

Our underperformance is unchallenged in the English and Welsh leagues imho, maybe the European ones as well. What did I miss matt?

You missed 1860 Munich, northsomersetblade... They rival us in mind-numbing underachievement.

Sorry about that coutts 7.5 had a good game looked strong in midfield. Picked out some nice passes, had good vision and put him self about throughout the match.

Whilst ^ is true in theory - we have apathetic board members/players who are happy to plod along and see this as some sort of achievement. We should be 2nd and Walsall should be happy with the result not the other way round. It's depressing that we have fallen so far as to seeing this as a 'result'.

On Radio Sheffield Keith Edwards said we stared well for 10 minutes then Walsall totally bossed the 1st half due to having a much quicker young athletic midfield. He said we were lucky to be going in 0-0 at half time as Long made some great saves.

Walsall deservedly went in front then finally United started to play.

Said we should have had a penalty and could have won but overall taking into account the first half a draw was a fair result.

He said he was quite impressed with Walsall and unlike Burton he expects them to be up there.

We started with an adventurous 4-4-2.

After 10-15 minutes they began to boss midfield - greater numbers or athletic players, who can say? But it's not something I'd listen to Keith on.

Also they were able to play the ball across the back four so we were occasionally chasing shadows. At which point some around me were proclaiming how we should just go and get the ball - like this hadn't occurred to the players.

So if we keep the ball and the opposition are chasing shadows we should hoof it upfield, but if they keep the ball and we are chasing shadows it's bc we're crap and/or not trying so we should go and get it off them.

Anyway, we switched to 4-3-3. They hit the woodwork twice but neither felt that close really - especially the shot which for once didn't fly into the top corner.

What was more of a chance was when they broke down the right, Long parried it out - not necessarily a criticism - and he made a very good reaction save.

Second half their goal was really simple and Bergen Blade has analysed it elsewhere.

Edwards is talking nonsense about how we woke up. We'd been playing containing counterattacking football, a goal behind we had to be more proactive.

This left us vulnerable at the back and there were chances at both ends.

Last 10-15 minutes were end to.end but more at our end than theirs though we may have created the better chances.

We seemed very deep and allowed players to have the ball almost unchallenged up to about 30 yards out and increasingly towards the end on the wings. But nothing came of it.

Adams's chance was a penalty and a sending off, and apparently a cross from Bob should also have been a penalty.

During the game I thought we were a distant second best but that might be bc we let them play - but didn't let them create. It'll be interesting to see it again and have a look at how much they did actually create second half.

One advantage we might have over other teams is our squad. Walsall looked good but if their Board hates the club like ours does ;-) and they sell Bradshaw, and they pick up injuries and suspensions, and they have to play Satdi, Tuesdi, then they might fade.

I wasn't at Walsall, works getting in the way and had to settle for listening on the radio...I've just watched it back on BP and we actually didn't look as bad as I thought...not saying we were great, just better than I thought...According to Giddings Walsall were by far the better team first half, but I thought we looked in control for the most part, although it is true we could have been 3 down, then 2nd half they got the goal and I thought we did well to comeback and showed some fight and created 2 or 3 chances before Baxter equalised...The Referee was diabolical..Chambers looked to elbow Baxter which left him in a heap for the stoppage..a blatant handball on the edge of their box from a Harris ball into the box..JCR brought down on the edge of the box...nothing given, but anything up the other end he couldn't wait to give..Shocking!...Definate Penalty aswell, awful Ref.
I know a lot won't agree, but I thought Hammond, although at fault for the goal did ok in terms of breaking up the play along with Coutts, and a lot of what Walsall did in terms of efforts on goal were from distance, and often wayward, although Collins nearly helped them out with a near own goal...We looked better when Sammon came on,and it looked like 4411 with Baxter in behind Sammon and with Che and Scougs out wide.
A draw was a fair result to be fair, and Walsall aren't a bad side but will struggle to hang on to Sawyers and Bradshaw.I'm more worried about the likes of Coventry and Wigan who are both looking strong, than the likes of Walsall and Gillingham.Let's hope Nige can get things sorted before we're to far adrift.

I usually text a couple of friends after away games. On Saturday it was something along the lines of "lucky to get away with it in the first half but a bit unlucky in the second. A few dodgy decisions" I invariably get a response quoting KE to the effect "he wasn't very impressed". I think a lot of performances leave a lot to be desired but I feel the results are a lot lot worse than the performances.
