Just read this, in which Walsall full-back Jason Demetriou (who??) says that his mighty promotion-chasers were "complacent" on Saturday, & that they expected to just turn up & win. Lol.

First priority for next season: the re-establishment of the Bramall Lane fortress!

Walsall "complacent" about coming here, WTF?!!

That tells you everything which is wrong with us right now.

"To be honest, and I don't mean to be critical, I saw them before and they didn't look half the side they were against us but that's this league and you should never underestimate anyone."

Sounds about right, the only question is which game did he watch? Plenty to choose from given that description.

If they were complacent then they got what they deserved, but the truth is probably that on the day they were simply beaten by a team who played better than them on the day.

"We have got to learn from it. This league is a funny league, you can't take your foot off the gas for one minute."

Implying, I suppose, that even mighty Walsall can come to Third Division minnows Sheffield United & have their applecart upset...

Well, to give him credit, he is an international player. For Cyprus that is.

That says more about them than it does us. It's a tight league and if you go into any game with that attitude you'll get your arse handed to you on a plate.

They also showed they had no 'plan b'.

When Basham's goal went in, United were quickly back on the attack getting past their own wingbacks. At 2-0 down they still didn't change anything, despite not really penetrating enough to cause us problems.

I would have expected them to go 3-4-3- to go man-for-man on our back three with a quarter of an hour to go. They must be fully aware what we are like being in front and then shipping a goal out of nowhere - see Crewe. Even when we sat back a bit there was nothing threatening. Hammond lost the ball inside our half and we looked to be a bit short staffed between the centre circle and the 18yd box but their options just weren't moving with the bloke with the ball for a lay off. McEveley made a bit of a typical 'ball bounces off him' fuck up and I expected them to put us onto the back foot from it. Nothing.

I don't want to allude that Walsall had an off day when we had a normal day at the office. The two goals we scored were made well and taken well and were with the run of play. But I feel we snuffed out any ambition they had to get the ball forward and as I said in my write up, all three CBs had a decent day dealing with their threats.

Been like that a few years.

Teams used to fear coming here.

First season in this league other teams were shitting bricks coming to the Lane.

Now we turn up to the Lane shitting bricks wondering if we will score nevermind get a win.

Maybe the Southend game highlights why Walsall failed? The very experienced Brown analysed what our threats were and changed his line up to counter it, which threw us for a while, long enough for them to regain the lead. We had less options to change our tactics again.

Walsall haven't got a proper manager and their changes weren't as effective. A good manager wouldn't have let them go into the game thinking it would be easy and would have made more effective changes. We may still have won because we were up for it but it would have been a greater test.

Just not true I'm afraid. Not sure what games you've been watching.

We've scored in every home league match this season apart from against Wigan and Burton.

We've scored an impressive 37 goals at Bramall Lane already. No team in League One has scored more goals at home than us.

No it hasn't. Early on even in this season at least one manager stated that whoever finishes above us will be champions. The vast majority of teams have come to Bramall Lane certainly not "complacent" but set up to defend, frustrate and counter-attack. I agree there's been little "fear" of coming to Bramall Lane lately but to say it's been "like that a few years" is false, Pete.

I think it'd be more accurate to say that teams would come to Bramall Lane in our first couple of seasons in the 3rd division and due to the surroundings and comparitive prestige of the club, they used to raise their game considerably.

The difference now is that they come here and know that they don't have to give it their best shot, because we rarely ever do either.

But on a positive note, we've only actually lost three home games this year, all against strong opposition (as far as this league goes). And since the Burton defeat we've won 3 on the trot, scoring 8 and conceding 2.
If we continue this trend then teams will once again come here, faced with a reinvigorated home crowd and be crushed like the fucking ants that they are :).

Ah but how many did we win?

From the facts offered.
That only frustrates me even more.
If we could sort out the away performances.
Too late now, perhaps, but it'd be great to see an unbeaten run up to the end of the season.
That though shouldn't save the OOC players who have underperformed and need to be moved on.

So it has been a bit of a fortress I guess then despite what others think.

Not really a fortress when we've lost 7 at home.

A totally useless stat from our season is that we've scored 25% of the home goals Wigan have conceded all season in the league. And managed that in 23 minutes. And we thought this season had been a disaster...

It makes a pleasant change from smaller clubs coming to Bramall Lane and playing the game of their lives, as has repeatedly happened over the last few seasons.
