For their breakaway fourth, imagine if it had been the other way round. By the time we had reached the halfway line, their defence would have all been back in position, the keeper lighting up a cigar, and folding his paper away.
Judging by the way Long seemed to "withdraw" his hand away from the shot that resulted in the fourth goal I think he was folding a paper away :(

He certainly got his angles all wrong for it and should have closed the player down a few paces more - that way he wouldn't have had the far post to aim at.
Having said that, the 4th was the only one that Long could have been culpable for - the rest were due to abject defending and not closing down or preventing the cross.
The times we allow a cross to come in unchallenged is frightening - any wonder why we concede so many?

The last point on there is the one that upsets me the most. For as long as I can remember (since the late 1980s), no team ever fancied a trip to Bramall Lane. Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United (especially Manchester United!)... every single team knew that they were going to face a hostile atmosphere and eleven red and white striped players riding on top of that buzz. To see teams like Shrewsbury noting that Bramall Lane has lost its fear factor is hard to take. Reputations like BTDBL's take decades to cultivate, and we seem to have lost it over a couple of drab years.

I don't think Shrwesbury were dire at all. They were very good for a spell of about 25 minutes in that first half. They counter attacked very well for the 4th and once they had established a comfortable lead, sat back somewhat and in the most part, dealt with our threat relatively comfortably. We had the odd moment but it wasn't chance after chance. Even in the last 15 minutes when Whitbread was hobbling.
