V. Nervy Crowd On Saturday

We had 24k at home v Southampton in the quarter finals including 5k away support but the lane noise was awesome. It ain't numbers it's passion. Many non league games I see have 300/500 attendance but loyal people who live breathe for their club. Morinho last week complained no atmosphere at old Trafford.. Newcastle have said same.its pricing and the new breed of timothy and Tristan that has killed football.

I like the crowd to be noisy, partisan, and supportive. I understand nervous (years of failure), but not having a go at the players (has not been much this season, and I really don't see the point of it during the game, unless a player is clearly not putting an effort in). I applaud Ricky for his efforts, and hope he makes a difference. But in general you cannot artificially create atmosphere: I felt for the derby match, the 10 minutes before kick-off they should have ditched the music, and let the crowd build its own atmosphere. And be tolerant of those who don't make a noise. Some of us are committed in ways that are probably not good for our health; others enjoy football, but United winning or losing is not what they live for. The club needs their support, and the more we can gradually convert, the better. Populations are very mobile nowadays (students, jobs, etc.,) so let's welcome those who are interested, but not committed, and encourage them rather than give them a bollocking for not making a noise. Football is changing, we need to make as many people as possible feel that they want to be at the Lane. For what it's worth, until safe-standing returns, I think we should press for some sections to be unnumbered seating, so like-minded fans can gather together.

Would you rather have empty seats, no income, or Timothy and Tristan paying money to watch the Blades? Get them in the ground, and encourage them to join in.

Same syndrome as most clubs are facing the higher you go. All clubs have a hardcore loyal fanbase ) I've travelled the UK and Europe with sufc since the early 70s ..I've seen us have 800 at Plymouth on a Tuesday night I've seen us have 250 at Plymouth on a bank holiday Monday night mid 80s, I've seen us at den Haag with 200 in pre season night game
.football is dying,, every club is now attached by hangers on.. Blackburn had 25k thru money .they struggle with 12k now ..same many teams..Sunderland no longer have passionate support ..money has ruined football sky has created a new breed of fan.

Quite right. Look around at the Lane these days and it's like Saga City as Rodley has pointed out. If we don't get the 15-30 age group attending in numbers then the long term future is bleak. Safe standing is an obvious solution but it aint going to happen, especially in Sheffield, so other solutions need to be thought up. It also doesn't help when the Saga brigade are constantly fucking moaning about standing up, people going for a piss and swearing. Watching re-runs of Thomas the Tank Engine is more edgy than some of our matches these days.

From someone on the south stand i've always found it takes the big games to bring out the singing voice on SS or even a turnaround in a games fortunes. One big problem over the last two years in particular has been the amount of swearing in all the chants - as much as i love Jack o connells magic , a lot of families round me understandably can't join in with 'head the f*cker back' etc whereas greasy chip butty always gets a good rendition

Have to say that this has frustrated me recently. Seems like every song we come up with, I have to come up with a child-friendly version. "He heads the brickie back!", "We are here to drink the beer!" and "And we'll really shake them up, the Blades are going up!" have had to be shared with my 6-year old. When I was a kid, the odd song had a swear word in it but not every song like today.

I'll stop being a grumpy old chuff now.

The pigs game you could feel the atmosphere growing before the game and right at the start it was electric. My sons first proper Derby that he will remember. But it just seems to fall flat.

I think it’s more of an issue these days as we have visited Leeds / Wolves / Villa where the Home supports noise was very very good.

Wolves have had issues with the crowd aswell..they rallied around after a home defeat to Forest and a sell out big game v us...Fair play they sounded loud, although I wasn't there...watched on tv.
I agree with those saying we're an ageing fanbase...we need the younger fans who naturally want to make a noise..it doesn't help with allseater stadiums either...the sooner standing is allowed back the better.
Another thing is to many people looking at their phone's all sodding game...and can the fans who make a din in the concourse turn up in the stand....Sing Up Shoreham!

More importantly, why have we lost the ability to perform the slow version of ‘when the blades go marchin’ in’?? Used to sound awesome and Spurs can still pull it off...our fans get giddy and speed it up too fast only for it to disperse into nothing...who’s to blame? Is it the saga, grey, siddarn brigade or the coke-fuelled schooligans?? I want answers

Simple stupidity is to blame.

We got it going properly at Norwich for the only time this season.

Is there any evidence to suggest we have an ageing fanbase with fewer younger people coming to the Lane? I know ten years or so ago we were making great strides to interest younger football fans in the city to come to the Lane. Maybe that has fall by the wayside a bit in recent years.

I agree with others that the atmosphere could be much better. It has been noticeably poorer in my opinion on the occasions I've been able to get to the Lane this season. The groups at the back of the kop doing their own thing. Up until recently I've had a season ticket at the back of the kop since '82 and things have got quieter recently. All seaters have no doubt had an impact but that isn't the only reason as when the kop went all seater in the early 90s the atmosphere was still very good

I actually think this is one of the main reasons why the atmosphere at English league games is getting consistently worse, every game I attend, no matter where in the country, I see young fans sat on their phones all game. These are the same young fans who are the ones needed to generate noise,

I've been to games in Germany and Holland and its not like this. Our kids are totally addicted to their phones. I know I sound like an old fart but its something I've definitely noticed.

How on earth do nerves prevent you shouting, singing and making a noise for your team? I require medical evidence before I will accept such feeble, abject bol

I think we do still make efforts to attract young fans but the result of this is youngsters accompanying their dad or granddad to the game, with them paying of course. I was attending games with mates or brothers and without adults from about 10 years old, paid for out of pocket money, and this doesn't happen anymore. The key is to get the present day youngsters to continue going as an adult when their dad stops paying for them. This will mean shelling out about £50 in total for the match day experience and there is plenty of choice to spend that kind of money these days, that is if you've got that spare in the first place.

There are no doubt quite a few in the 18-35 age group but they are vastly outnumbered by us fogies, you only have to look around, and they are the future whereas we are not, sadly.

Got to love the old codgers around me but the South Stand does seem to be full of OAPS making the most of the over 60 discount.

Or maybe supporters who've been around for years and sat in there enjoying the club's generosity? You know, people who were on the Kop years ago and who were able to generate an atmosphere worth talking about when we were in similar positions, league wise.

I've no evidence, but looking around the stands there does seem a lot of us in the 40 to 70 age range.

The atmosphere at the Lane can be quiet at times but I would say that's generally the case when we visit away games too. We almost always out sing the home fans. Yes it could be better but also I think that the atmosphere at the Lane is still decent. I think there is an expectation of success that can lead to an impatience - victims of our own success. Also when you consider that we've got an extra 6-7000 home fans this season that previously weren't coming as often you've diluted the hard core fans which are usually the most passionate. As others have said the top tier in the Stones Championship end (that's going back a while!) has meant you've lost some of the singing to that end but not enough either to generate a regular atmosphere.

However, all in all, I'm not concerned and I think we'll see some great atmosphere's again this season at the Lane.

Not sure it’s nerves exactly, but it’s something to do with expectation and when we’re playing really well and there’s a scent of blood in the air the atmosphere is electric.

I liked what I saw at Wolves the other week (Not the football -although we tried). But the Wolves fans had competitive chanting from different sections of the ground. It started with the “Steve Bull” Stand, then it moved around the ground in turn, each stand trying to outshout the others.

We could try that maybe? Starting with “The Shoreham”, then the turn of “The South Stand” And “The Bramall Lane” then “ The John Street”. Maybe even “The Westfield Corner” could join in, (in Mandarin Chinese obviously)?

I think realistically it will only come from one of two areas, the back of the kop or the bramall lane side of the south stand. The last few years that's the main places it's been generated and i think we need to build it up from those areas

That's not going to work with two thirds of John Street muttering I wish they'd stop that singing.....

If 100 or so vocal fans get together in the BLUT that end of the ground will be loud. Simple as that.

There's nothing stopping people.

We need to get behind them more, our numbers are great but the vocal side of our crowd at present isn’t good enough for what they’ve treated us too this season, I’ve been one to stick up for our fans in the past but we need to be a lot better now, there’s no excuses from us.
True, but I don't think it will happen.

Well I can’t speak for John Street because it’s some years since I went in there. It was full of screaming kids last time and put me off.

But I can tell you now, there’s several of us in the South Stand who remove our false teeth and use them as miracas when we get excited.

Shoreham? Pah!

Bring it on!

Old guys rule!
