Don't know if this is related to financial cost cutting or what, but United have passed over responsibility for the bar and catering staff to a group called Compass. As far as I know, everyone has kept their jobs (my brother included) but their wages aren't being paid directly by SUFC any more.

The staff themselves were quite surprised as the mark-ups on food and beer mean that they're running at a tidy profit.

Are United attempting to streamline throughout the operation?

Outsourcing the catering I suppose is a cost cutting exercise, I'm guessing they can't make enough to make it worth the while.

Interesting news Linz, but no-one's shedding staff though?
Mebbes the Birch is making moves already?

Shedding in the sense that United are reducing the numbers of directly employed staff... was what I meant :)

My mum used to work at Ranmoor ( the government building), Compass were her employers there and she's said that they treated their staff very well, in fact my mum say's they are the best employers she's worked for.

Will I be able to get a pint of beer at half time before 3.58 having watched the entire first half?

I thought the staff on the bars at HT had been non SUFC employees for a while?

I'm not on about the half-time staff... although I think these were brought into the company fairly recently so the same might be happening to them.

I'm talking about the staff who work in the function suites and proper bars :)

All catering used to be provided by a third party but when JSS was opened the catering for that stand was in-house. The JSS catering was superior but it couldn't be delivered to the rest of the ground until the contract expired. On the expiry of said contract all catering was brought in-house.

You can guarantee the catering standards will drop or prices will rise considerably and when you moan to the club they'll say it's not us who sets the prices or the products. No one will lose their jobs initially but they will when the sef-fulfilling downward spiral of attempting to maintain profits with fewer customers due to lower quality and higher prices takes hold.

I'd be interested to know if anyone thinks that outsourcing ever brought about an improvement for customers, it's just another accounting trick of doing the dirty on employees but without paying redundancy etc.

I know this has been covered before probably but it is very difficult to deal with employees who are only needed for a few hours every 2 weeks. People go off sick or don't turn up and SUFC have the hassle of dealing with all that.

I go on a few courses etc at BDTBL and there are a few staff who wheel the coffee out and make a bacon sarnie if it is a posh do, but vast majority of people will be working for a few hours on matchday - I guess Linz could say how many hours her mate does per week?

I can see the sense of doing it but totally agree with what you say about quality and prices

Given the multiple options people have for food and drink within a 10 minute walk of the ground, I often wonder if the club don't consider this a major potential source of additional income and consequently don't really care what anyone thinks?

If it's only ever going to be a last resort, then why bother?

My brother, who works as a bar supervisor part time while at college, can work up to around 30 hours a week... they'd have him more if they could and pop him on the John Street reception if he's got a spare morning off college. The Tunnel bar is open at the weekends during the evenings for the students who live nearby, then there's the Platinum Suite and John Street suites with weddings, parties, discos and whatever. During a function, the bars can stay open until around 4am.

Plus Christmas is rolling up.

Most function catering staff work shifts of at least 8 hours... and 12 hour shifts are not unheard of. Plus, United used to send their staff out to cover other events when the Lane wasn't busy. My brother's worked the rugby at the KC a few times and Donny races.

The function staff are extremely busy. Which is why they are surprised that United don't want to keep a tight rein on them.

Get one from Beighton

Always thought the bar costs in the platinum suite were reasonable, can kiss reasonable prices goodbye now. London hotel bar costs in future!!

No problem Swiss Blackwell has just arranged a loan from Greggs the Bakers for 7 staff next week Although only 5 will be able to serve at any one time FA Rules!!!
