United’s resurgence continued as they made it four wins from four after demolishing high flying Stoke City 4-0 at Bramall Lane. The Blades have suddenly found their scoring boots and went one better than the three they had plundered in the previous three fixtures. Mark McGuinness and the outstanding Femi Seriki scored their first goals for the club before Pat Bamford gave United a three-goal lead at half time for the second consecutive fixture. After the break, there were several more opportunities before Sydie Peck made it three goals in a week after slamming home a penalty following a challenge inside the box on Andre Brooks. The winger had also given one of his best performances in a Blades shirt as his tandem with Seriki caused all sorts of problems all afternoon for a panic-stricken Potters backline. United are slowly inching up the table and confidence seems to be oozing through the side as they look to try and recover from the nightmare start under Ruben Selles.
The Blades made four changes with another three-game week in prospect. In came Sam McCalllum, McGuinness, Bamford and Gus Hamer. Ben Mee was out with a hand injury, whilst Callum O’Hare, Harrison Burrows and Tom Cannon were rotated out of the starting lineup. There was the first inclusion in a match day squad for over a year for the popular Oli Arblaster. Stoke had started the season impressively but had dropped back from the front two recently after losing 3 games in 4 before this contest. They were backed by a sold out away end as the game began with driving rain in the air.
The game started with both teams looking to get men forward in an open contest. Stoke won an early corner and as it came out Tchamadeu tried to get his shot away but was blocked by Tanganga. United won a corner at the other end and McCallum flashed his header over when well placed. Mubama had a header off target at the other end before United won another corner. Stoke failed to pick up MCGUINNESS again and this time, the big centre half made no mistake powering his header into the net. He almost repeated the feat soon after as yet again Stoke could not deal with him and the set plays coming into their box.
United now were starting to take control of the game with Peck and Riedewald winning the midfield battle and Campbell and Bamford moving the Stoke centre backs around. Much of the danger was coming down the flanks with Seriki, Brooks and Hamer all running at the visiting defenders who were now struggling to hold the Blades up. Campbell and Hamer both seemed to have been pulled back on quick breaks but the referee waved their appeals away.
McGuinness won another header unopposed that Johansson had to parry away and it was now one way traffic. Bamford twice won free kicks with clever hold up play before Tchamadeu was booked for pulling him back.
Stoke had not threatened since the opening part of the game but won a corner that Cooper could only get partially cleared and Bocat fired over as it dropped to the edge of the box. Brooks had an effort saved from the edge of the box after good work between him and Seriki in the build-up. McCallum and Hamer played excellent balls but Bamford could not quite get on the end of the dangerous cross into the box. Bamford then had a shot deflected over the bar.
Brooks shot was deflected and Johansson had to get down quickly to turn it around his near post. United’s set plays were proving a huge danger for Stoke who were unable to deal with some dangerous balls coming into the box. From the next Blades corner, it was not a surprise that McGuinness got another header in, this time over the bar. Soon after another one from Hamer was at least dealt with, or so it seemed, but it fell for SERIKI who jinked past his man, steadied himself and curled an absolute beauty into the top corner away from the despairing dive from Johansson.
The goals kept coming and only 4 minutes later, on 44 minutes, the Blades made it three. The set up was fantastic as Seriki exchanged passes with Peck and got the ball right on the byline and sent over a perfect cross on the half volley that BAMFORD met with a precise flicked header into the corner. United were giving a standing ovation for their efforts as they went down the tunnel at half time.
McGuinness had received treatment in the first half and was not deemed fit enough to carry on, so Tyler Bindon came on for his first appearance under Chris Wilder. Stoke also made a change in their backline, with Phillips on for Rigo.
United continued to look for more goals right from the off – as the ball dropped to Hamer who curled an instinctive effort that Johansson tipped over. Tanganga then headed into the side netting from another clever corner. Stoke were having more possession this half but were not really creating anything as United banked up and looked to break whenever it was turned over. From such a break, after the referee played an excellent advantage after Peck was fouled, United had 4 on 2. Hamer played the ball with the outside of his foot to Bamford on the right side and his cross narrowly evaded Brooks in the middle. Thomas had been kept quiet by United’s right-hand side and he departed on 57 minutes – replaced by Gallagher.
Brooks had been a real threat all game and he sent over a dangerous cross after beating the full back again and soon after he had a driven shot that the keeper spilled but recovered just before United could force it home.
Stoke did finally register an effort of note on Cooper’s goal as the ball came in from the right and Mubama was left unmarked but his header was saved by the Blades stopper. Bindon did well to block the follow up from Manhoef. The Blades made a double change with Riedewald and Bamford departing and Soumare and Cannon entering the proceedings.
Cisse replaced Manhoef and O’Hare came on for Hamer with 20 minutes to play. Brooks was booked for a late challenge but this was the only real blemish in an excellent second half and the winger made the fourth goal soon after. He started the move with a marauding run and then picked up possession again centrally before playing in Campbell. The striker’s back heel sent the ball back into the path of Brooks who was clumsily bundled over by Phillips. The penalty award was an easy one for referee Stephen Martin who cautioned the substitute for his offence.
PECK took the kick and drove it fiercely down the middle as the keeper went to his right. Peck celebrated in front of the Kop with a slide and a forward roll capping a fantastic week for the England u21 international. Burrows came on for McCallum as the game entered the final 10 minutes but Stoke’s players were looking at the scoreboard and just hoping they could get away without further damage – many of their supporters had departed the stadium by this point. World Cup winner Steven Nzonzi came on for the visitors, along with Bozenik – with Lawal and Mubama being replaced.
For the Blades it was becoming exhibition stuff with Seriki and Brooks toying with the Stoke defenders. Brooks fired over after more nice build up play. Tanganga headed narrowly over from another corner before after more good play down the right, O’Hare’s ball in was headed over by fellow sub Burrows. There were three minutes of stoppage time played but it all seemed totally academic now as United played keep ball before being able to celebrate another victory as their impressive recent run continued.
