The Blades continued their excellent league form with a comfortable 3-0 victory against a poor Swansea side at the Lane. Much like last season, United did what they had to and barely gut of first gear but did not have to as they brushed away a timid Swans side that barely had an attack all contest. Goals from Berge, Robinson and McBurnie resulted in an easy win as United continued to get the results they need in keeping a comfortable cushion in the promotion places. Burnley and Middlesborough both also won and as the Teesside side prepare to come to S2 in a few days, United know that they face a pivotal week in which they can put a realty sizeable cushion between themselves and any challengers in the race for the Premier League.

United made three changes from the side that beat Wrexham in the cup with Foderingham, Lowe and Bogle back into the starting line-up. McBurnie was still not quite seen as ready to start but on a bench that seemed much stronger with Fleck also back in the match day squad. Swansea started with former Blade Naughton in the backline and Piroe leading their line.

The opening of the game was relatively quiet with Swansea trying to play out of the back and move it on patiently but offering little in the way of attacking threat. United were somewhat feeling their way into the game. McAtee and Ndiaye were looking to get into those areas off the front but the game was relatively scrappy. Swansea had the first chance as Piroe forced Foderingham into a save on the angle and Cullen could not converge on the rebound.

United started to find some rhythm and Ahmedhodzic nearly got in before McAtee was tackled after an enterprising run but on 21 minutes United took the lead with their first meaningful effort on goal. It came from Bogle and McAtee moving the ball on and it was switched to BERGE who with no challenge incoming caressed the ball delightfully into the corner away from Fisher’s despairing dive. It was the Norwegian’s second goal in a week at the Lane with both excellent finishes showing his class and composure in such situations.

The Blades looked to build on this and nearly got a second goal soon after. A good move saw the ball played down the right and as it came over Sharp’s effort was deflected but saved as Swansea appealed for a foul and then Ndiaye had an effort saved from Fisher as United looked to turn the screw. Russell Martin was booked for his protestations prior to the challenge.

The Blades had upped the tempo and it the visitors were struggling to stay in the game and it came as no surprise when the second goal came. McAtee got away from Cooper had to resort to illegal means to bring him down. Norwood took the kick and his effort smacked the underside of the bar and bounced down but ROBINSON was quickest to react and smashed the ball home to double the United lead.

The second half began very stop start, not helped by a fussy referee with McAtee and Cabango both booked but Berge and Norwood were dictating midfield and the visitors were not laying a glove on United. It was relatively comfortable even if there was not much goal mouth action either way. Whittaker and Cundle came on for Ntcham and Cullen for the visitors who had not really caused the Blades many issues at all in a performance reminiscent of their efforts in a resounding defeat almost a year ago at the same ground.

Sharp picked up a knock and had to go off with McBurnie coming on. Osborn also replaced McAtee for United as the game ticked into the final 20 minutes. The crowd continued to be frustrated by the fussy Donoghue who was making a routine game much more bitty than it needed to be. United at times moved it around well but seemed happy to let the clock tick away. Swansea finally created a chance as Cooper’s header was saved from Foderingham after Piroe’s good work and Cabango then headed over as Swansea finally created something in a game they had barely entered the United box.

Wood then was booked for a bad tackle on McBurnie before Norwood’s free kick fell for Robinson hit the post with another instinctive effort. Bogle then had an effort blocked before Egan’s powerful header was saved at full length from Fisher down low as United looked to finish the game off. They did so with a minute left. Excellent work from Bogle saw him weave across the box and round the keeper before his cross Osborn’s effort blocked but MCBURNIE was able to apply the finish against his former club.

Allen had replaced Fulton and Coulibaly came on for Berge right at the death but the verdict had long been decided and United eased to three easy points with as comfortable a win as you could wish.

United – Perfect really. We did not seem to exert too much energy but did what we had to see off a poor side who were not that physical (so unlikely we would get injuries) and just sort of cantered to an easy win. It was very similar to last season. They came and had a fair bit of play but lost it in their own half and out themselves under pressure. They started ok and had one decent chance but they did not really control things and slowly we grew into it and once we felt them out, the likes of McAtee, Berge and Ndiaye supported from Norwood dictating behind; saw us take control. The goal we scored was easy but so well taken and reminiscent of many other games showed we can play decent but only need one of our quality technical players to just step up and show some quality and we get the chances/goals. It was only a half chance but Berge took it really well. After this Sharp and Ndiaye had chances and then after the superb free kick from Norwood, Robinson was Jackie on the spot and smashed home. You sensed with the lack of aggression and proper attacking threat from them, that could be enough and so it proved.

The second half was really comfortable. We did not play brilliant but did not need to and just moved it around and defended sensibly. They did not put us under too much pressure and only had one proper chance I can recall. We still had more chances even though we played within ourselves and our attacking play was somewhat limited after the break. You sensed we could up it if we wanted to but just did not need to. Swansea were so timid and lacked real intent and were dire to watch. I did think United were just ok but I felt if they needed to could have upped it. We just coasted it and then in the end had a few more chances before the final goal. 3-0 in the end was about right. It was an easy win and I do not say that arrogantly. It was just a win we eased to. I thought they may have learnt their lesson from last season but played exactly the same and got the same sort of insipid result. United were decent to good and it is as controlled a win as we have had for some time. We have won most games but been my narrow margins, even if the wins have not been with too much distress actually. Today I never felt like we would not win once we went ahead and actually probable could have gone on and scored more if we needed to.

Burnley won and seem well away from even us and Boro won but Watford/Blackburn/Luton drew and West Brom/Norwich lost. Millwall are quietly going well and it means with them and Boro the next two games- we have a chance to really cement our place in the top two in terms of any chances of teams catching us. Boro are in great form, but so are we. If we play like we can I think we are better than them – as the table shows. We need a performance like last year where we were really at it and came at them. They have some good attacking threats but I feel we can cause real problems the other way. The first goal will be important but I feel we will start with McBurnie and Ndiaye with Berge and McAtee supporting and that we can impose ourselves on them. It feels like a big game but if we lose; we still have a cushion. As good as they are going, if they lose this game with us having a much better goal difference it would be effectively 14 points and we have a game in hand and would feel like we have one foot back in the top fight. It is a big game and hopefully in front of packed Lane we can keep our brilliant run going.

Ratings:

Foderingham 7/10 – Had very little to do at all. Saved one easy shot first half and then made a better save but still expected from the header second half. Outside of this had very little to do and was well protected. Pleasing to get another clean sheet.

Bogle 7.5/10 – Thought he was ok to good. He did not burst forward as much as maybe he has in other games but showed some flashes and he created a few things first half. They did not have any joy out of him defensively either. Second half he then creates the final goal with a run and drew the keeper before the cross. He sort of played within himself but still looked a threat when he did get forward.

Lowe 7/10 –Steady game. Did not see much of him going forward really but he was just sensible and solid really. A few neat touches and involvements in attacks but he just did what he needed.

Robinson 8/10 – My man of the match and carried on his outstanding recent form. Scored a well taken goal where he reacted superbly and then nearly had another with a reaction shot that hit the post. Defended really well and made several interceptions and always quicker and more determined his opponents.

Ahmedhodzic 7/10 – Thought we saw glimpses of the Anel we saw earlier in the season in the week and today he looked comfortable against a limited attack. Came out when he had to and used it well but he was not really put under pressure.

Egan 7/10 – As above. They rarely got into our third and only two chances of note (one either half) and not sure these were that hard for Wes. He dealt with Piroe fairly easily although he had little service. An easy game really.

Norwood 7.5/10 – Thought he had quiet start to the game but then got better and better and started to dictate against a weak and timid midfield who did not press at all. He moved it around when he had to and his free kick was excellent and so close. He then nearly set up another for Robinson too. He had a game where he just strolled it and oozed through really.

McAtee 7/10 – Some good things where he got on it and dribbled and committed defenders. His body control and balance is excellent. He got into those areas where they could not pick him up and with Ndiaye, Berge also being threats, it was hard for Swansea to stem the tide. Having multiple players who can dribble, penetrate and run at teams means they have to pick their poison. Showed some good strength and won a few headers too! Gets stuck in now and a completely different player to the raw kid we saw earlier in the season.

Berge 7/10 – Continued his improvements and he was at the heart of many good things we did. Maybe he was not involved throughout but he did not need to be and just had those big moments. The goal was superb and made to look easy but was far from it. Second half he was not as involved but he still at times showed his class to help us keep control.

Ndiaye 6.5/10 – Not sure he has been fully at his best last few games and today he was quiet and had probably the least involvement in a game for us for a while. When he did have it, he still looked good and linked and made some good runs but not sure we had too many real goal threats or chances made from his play even though he was neat and tidy.

Sharp 6.5/10 – Thought he worked hard again but not sure he had many chances (one effort deflected at the keeper) but did a job for the team. Won a few free kicks and linked with a few others but felt he tired second half and was about ready to come off before his injury. He rolled his ankle which hopefully will not see him out for too long and was taken off second half.

Subs –

Osborn – Did well today. A few decent bits of link play, ran with it a few times and helped set up the third goal.

McBurnie – Worked across the front line, nearly got in a scrap and then scored a goal from close range against his former club (did not celebrate too much) so typical McBurnie really. Expect him to start v Boro.

Fleck – Got stuck in instantly in limited time winning a few tackles. With the issues with Doyle, we will need him to play a part in the run in.

Basham – Did not get long but a handy lad to come on off the bench.

Coulibaly – Nice to see him get a very brief cameo in the league after he did well in the week.

Manager: Heckingbottom 7.5/10 –

Swansea – I recall them last season down at the Lane and thinking what a perplexing style of football. They played it out from the back and played tippy tappy stuff but never got into our half and then normally coughed it up/lost it and we rounded on it and had chances. They kept doing the same thing over and over again. It was not working and we surged into a big lead. They still did not change. It was as if their approach was ingrained and they would not do it. They looked such a soft touch and easy to score/play against. At times it obviously works as they were not that close to the bottom but their style also did not see them come close to threatening the top places. Maybe over time it would work as players and his style would become properly instilled and in turn, they could get players to play it? Well, I have watched them a few times this season and at home sometimes they have looked decent and broken through teams press and scored goals but they have also looked very brittle and continued to give it away in stupid areas. They let in too many goals and are not pragmatic at all but seems like the manager is going to persevere with it no matter what. You sense with the budget/players they have that it will see them going down rather than up though but they continue to keep playing the same.

It’s not even good stuff as they pass it in their own third and it is all a bit David Weir. They do not look exciting or attractive to watch. It’s dull football with no real incisiveness at all. It’s poor to watch and it is not even winning football. Teams have come here and at least got some balls or set plays into our box and caused us issues but turning us round. They had 58% possession but did pretty much nothing with it. It was pointless possession. I felt Wrexham gave us more problems than they did and they are one of the most insipid and weakest sides to come here. They barely looked like getting in our final third let alone scoring with a few half chances the sums of their efforts. They will not change it though and its stubbornness to the point of stupidity. As my Uncle said today, if they kicked it long maybe they get fined? They don’t have a great squad with a mixture of young players with veterans but not much quality at either end.

The keep ball possession will see them maybe have enough chances/points to stay well away from the bottom but they are not going to be close to the top 6 playing like they did today. United did not need to be anything other than ok-decent to win easily. No wonder not many fans travel to watch them as for the most part it is dull football and losing football too.

Opponent Man of the Match –Not sure anyone came out with much credit at all. Grimes showed a few moments on the ball but the front line did nothing and the defence was exposed when we wanted to up it and run at them. The keeper made a few decent saves I suppose too.

Opponent Weak link – Take your pick. Nothing in terms of attacking threat and the midfield did not probe/create at all. The two centre backs were poor though on and off the ball – giving it away a lot when trying to play it out and then defensively got pulled around. So take your pick from Cabango and Wood although Naughton was a sad sight to see as he struggled and looked a yard slower than he used to be and we caused problems down his side.

Referee/Officials – Our friend Matthew Donogue. Every time he refs our games he seems desperate to make games all about him. Even a standard easy win today with few bad tackles/moments and only that one melee involving Robinson near the end, he still managed to draw way too much attention. He wanted to give 50-50’s as fouls, set plays from just in the right place and just incredibly fussy and officious. Good refs you barely notice but this guy way too often wants to be the star of the show. Last season we saw this v Forest (league) and Blackburn but then has had a few ok games this season but today he was back to the irritating, meddling twat we saw in the games last season. Rare a ref gets booed off at half time and full time in an easy home win. That shows how irritating he is. We should and could have had a penalty for the grappling on Robinson and Anel but then the scrum came after and he had book both but had lost control long before this. Just a really irritating, meddlesome ref who did not control the game well even though he blew his whistle a lot. Both managers (Martin was booked quite early) will surely mark him quite low?

Matchday/Crowd/Coverage – It was fairly quiet as the Blades cantered for the win but in contrast to the week, we only had maybe 300-400 away fans and so not much rival atmosphere to spar with the home fans. We went ahead and then the second soon after and it sort of faded away (in a good way) to an easy Blades win. The crowd should and will be much louder with more opposition fans and a game that will be tougher and closer you assume in the week.

Fair scoring for me, our link up play was great at times but I didn’t feel we were completely free flowing & they did manage to play it around us quite easily at times they just didn’t have any quality up top.

Comfortable win in the end but we’ll need to be better over the next 5 games

We were very good. Swansea were crap but part of that was us making them crap. The pressing was aggressive and effective and it felt like a performance from before the WC.

Bogle, Norwood, and Berge all deserve half a point more than you've given them.

I kind of marked them good to very good rather than excellent as the oppo was so bad. They barely pressed or tackled and it was like a training match at times for out lot as good as we were for spells.

Fair enough. I think those three were probably in the excellent category for me regardless of the opposition but you’re right that Swansea were as soft as anyone we’ve faced this year.

Donohue had no control of that game whatsoever. Giving them a free kick for their defender taking out his own keeper. Players delaying free kicks by standing over the ball. He repeatedly told them to back off and they didn't, but then didn't card them for dissent. Swansea players constantly at him everytime he gave a foul our way, and yet they never moaned when they got a decision their way. Ollie Copper throwing himself to the floor everytime a Blade touched him, and on one occassion in the first half when Ndiaye was a metre away where no contact was made. No free kick given, quite rightly, but no free kick for diving either. Even when the melee broke out at the end he didn't break it up. He stood to the side of the goal as a spectator. He was awful today from start to finish and deserved all the boos that came his way. The standard of refereeing in the Championship is truly woeful but Donohue is the worst I've ever seen. Worse than Trevor Kettle and Martin Atkinson.

Agree with scores, second half we didn't get out of second gear. Thought we lost momentum in the middle when Mcatee went off which led to their only real chance. Osborn was better when he moved to LWB. He's not the answer in the middle and Flecks return is timely.

The next 7 league games will determine our season. 6 of them against teams in the promotion mix. How we approach them will be critical. If we play on the front foot and use Mcatee's running to complement Ndiaye and Berge then I feel we will get the points we need. Adopt a more defensive approach in the middle with the return of the flat 3 and we will struggle imo. All about our mindset now. We need to play with no fear at a high tempo starting with the next game.

As for the return of Donoghue we should probably be grateful we finished the game with11 players based on his previous performances at the Lane.

Law 8 of the FA rules state that only in the instance where the ball is in the penalty area when play is stopped does the defending goalkeeper receive the ball for the restart. In all other instances the team in possession of the ball when play is stopped restart. So why did this idiot get in wrong on at least 3/4 occasions. Doughty and Donoghue in 4 days and we still won both games. We are overdue a set of competent officials. Onto Boro at Home.

That's about the second or third game a player has had his shirt half or in Clark's case, fully pulled off his back.

How come these are not being given as penalties when shirt pulling in itself is supposed to be an offense? These are the most extreme examples.

To think seasons back, Kozluk was penalised at Anfield in a proper stitch up between the ref and Stephen Gerrard for grabbing the latter's shirt yet we see players fully or partially undressed by the opposition and an offense doesn't get called.

Despite being second and a supposed Big Fish in this division, we've had a series of appalling decisions against us. It's like we're second despite having to play against 11.5 men every week on average.

Quite annoying Burnley keep winning. Sour grapes from me but we're as good as them, if not better. It's only that ridiculous period of 6 games where we had debilitating injuries that prevented us putting out strong line ups. Hope they get bubonic plague in their camp for a month and 6 games reffed by Donohue to even things up!

Cheers DB. Been a bit busy in our house with in-laws visiting from UK, so was in bed asleep for 9pm, with a plan to record and watch in the morning. Kick off was midnight here. Set my alarm, woke up, put game on, went back to bed, but realized when I woke up I’d forgot to record it. Jesus, what a fucking anecdote that is. Feel free to use it on the pod.

Anyway, point is, appreciative of your report even more than normal. Required reading.

Bogle at least a 9 I'd say but a 7.5 off Deadbat is akin to a batter scoring 70 runs on a green top in May with the ball swinging round corners. I.e. you can add on a few 😂

I do agree Swansea were awful but it's because how they play suits us to the ground, was the same last year and I called it before the game, we did play well, executed our high press and we're clinical when we needed to be.

As for that fucking ref...

he wanted set plays from just in the right place

Apart from at 2 0 when he gave Swansea a dubious free kick then let them take it about 10 yards further in field than it happened. Talk about inconsistent. Bellend of a ref.

Despite the love in for Bogle, I still think Baldock is a better defender. Bogle plays more like a winger and either Anel or Berge have to cover for him defensively. No problem with that though, as the players obviously realise it.
I thought Egan was superb yesterday. I think we continually underestimate his value to the team and the way we play. They hardly had a sniff, two meaningful attempts on goal, Piroe, a good player at this level, did not get a look in. They subbed the other forward because he wasn't getting a look in. Didn't make any difference. Egan was faultless, won everything and I lost count of the number of times he intercepted their through balls. We're lucky to have him. The other two CB's were good too, particularly Robbo, apart from getting involved in stuff he doesn't need to, especially when the game is already won.

As good as they are going, if they lose this game with us having a much better goal difference it would be effectively 14 points and we have a game in hand and would feel like we have one foot back in the top fight.

We only have a much better goal difference (+ 13 goal better than them) because we're 10 points in front with a game in hand.
Boro actually have a very good goal difference and if they catch us up, due to the swing by both clubs, the goal difference would be very close.

For example
Boro currently have a +14 goal difference, played 31 on 51 points.
Let's say they beat us by 1 goal, then win their next 3 matches by 2 goals each game (not unreasonable)
The table would then show Middlesboro played 35 on 63 points with a +21 goal difference

We are currently on a +27 goal difference, played 30 an on 61 points.
To end up on the same 63 points as Boro, we'd need to draw 2 and lose 3 to be on the same points as them.
Regards the 3 losses, we lose 2 of them by 1 goal and one defeat by 2 goals (again not unreasonable)
The table would then show us played 35 on 63 points (exactly the same as Boro) but with a +23 goal difference.

My point is that it's too close for comfort regards GD compared to Boro and we could do with a few more 3-0's like yesterday.

The 2 wing backs were great for us. Bogle dud what he does, but Lowe set the tone closing down and bringing energy. Possibly the quietest player was Ndaiye.

Good performance, bring on Boro.

Ndiaye was quieter yesterday but worked really hard closing down the Swansea defenders, on one occasion in the first half winning a corner for us. All of our attacking players did this effectively, no doubt pre-planned.

Excellent report ... just as I saw it from the South Stand gangway E

Thought we played with 12 men imo, I noticed Naughton shaking hands with Billy as he walked off - and that challenge on Bogle before the goal was laughable, for most of the game he just played it backwards and sideways - bizarre lol. Once a Blade always a Blade

Robinson was excellent but did lose his man badly for the chance in the second half that a better player would've put away. Nobody below a 7 though - long may it continue
