Sheffield United’s cup adventure continues after a hard fought draw against Premier League opponents Fulham at a wet and miserable Bramall Lane. The Blades led after Chris Porter’s opportunistic finish after Harry Maguire’s run but Maguire had to go off injured and then a stupid kick out from skipper Michael Doyle saw the Blades down to ten men. United defended resolutely but a strike from Hugo Rodallegla finally saw the Cottagers level and after this the home side were hanging on as they threw bodies in front of the ball to earn a replay. Both teams had genuine appeals for a spot kick in either half in an action packed game that went ahead despite dreadful weather conditions with the rain continuing unabated pre and throughout the contest.

Referee Mariner had taken several looks at the pitch but deemed it playable. Fulham made eleven changes with one eye on a league game in 48 hours whilst the home side brought in Brayford for his debut for the departing right back McMahon, Coady in for McGinn and Porter for the cup tied Paytner. The two other newcomers Scougall and Harris were on the bench alongside the returning youngster De Girolamo.

The rain continued to come down as the game began mired in midfield in the early stages. Murphy’s early run won a free kick that was cleared away before Long had to keep out David who cut in on the angle at the other end. Rodallegla then headed over as Fulham looked to take control. Their cause was not helped when Riise had to limp off to be replaced by Plumain. Baxter had a free kick that curled just wide after United had won a free kick in a dangerous position. Fulham were enjoying more of the ball and indecision by Collins and Hill saw a chance for Kasami but the mud came to United’s rescue.

The weather started to improve with the lashing rain starting to ease and the sun even started to peer through the clouds. It was this moment when United were able to take the lead.

Maguire advanced and seeing no one closing him down he carried on and advanced past a few half hearted challenges before driving in a cross that PORTER managed to turn into the goal. The striker had done well to get ahead of the defenders and to stay onside.

Fulham hit back and had an opportunity and an appeal for a penalty as Rodallegla got in and appeared to be clipped by Long but Mariner waved play on and the ball eventually was cleared away. Maguire took a knock and had to receive treatment as the final moments of the half took place.

The goalscorer did not return after the break as an injury meant he could not continue and newcomer Scougall was introduced for his debut. Maguire resumed but he was not comfortable and had to go off replaced by Harris with Hill moving inside. Kasami shot wide and then Duff’s cross was blocked by Collins as United had to defend in numbers. Still for the domination the home side were keeping the ball well when they had it and Baxter showed some neat touches with Flynn and Murphy running at defenders when they could.

Baxter shot at the keeper but disaster struck soon after when Doyle kicked out at David off the ball after an earlier clash and Mariner saw it and gave Doyle a straight red card. There was no appeal and it was a moment of madness from the captain.

Scougall had got on the ball when he could and looked good running at defenders and showing excellent close control and dribbling. He had one run where he went past a number of players before he was crowded out.

Fulham put on Bent and then Kasami went down looking for another penalty but this was rightly waved away. However a superb run and break from Flynn saw him drive past two defenders and then have his leg taken away. It seemed a regulation penalty but Mariner waved play away with perhaps his thought of ignoring a strong first half shout at the forefront of his mind.

Karagounis had a free kick blocked and then he was involved as Fulham finally got level. Duff was the initiator and the ball was moved across the box. RODALLEGLA took a touch and steadied himself and drilled an excellent low shot into the right hand corner of Long’s goal.

Still despite this blow Murphy still looked a threat and he ran at his man again leading to a spell of respite for the home side that now had to scrap with ten men. The visitors had a golden chance to score the winner when from a cross from the right, Senderos header looped onto the bar and then the rebound was blocked amidst a sea of bodies. Next up the ball ricocheted across the box and Kasami was able to head across to the unmarked Bent who seemed certain to score but screwed wide with the goal at his mercy.

McGinn came on for Baxter as United continued their back to the walls effort as they had to face two successive corners and Senderos playing as another attacker. The final chance came to Taarabt but his shot took a slight deflection and went just past the post. United ended the game on the attack but Murphy did not see Flynn’s run and the chance went just before the final whistle.

United – It was plucky performance where we got men behind the ball, defended with bodies and cleared it, blocked it and did all we can to stop them scoring. However we played some really good football and got the wingers, creative players on the ball and had some good runs/attacks.

You could not fault them for how good some of the football we played more so in the second half as we attacked defenders, committing men the other way and played some good stuff. We played well for much of the game but I still was a bit disappointed with some elements (up to the red card oddly enough).

Thought we were wasteful on the ball in the first half and sat off too much. They could have had a few goals thanks to some sloppy defending and the goal was against the run of the play. Still one up and having kept them out you sensed we had a real chance.

The second half we needed to keep it tight and not do anything daft and then our captain does something stupid. Ironically in the second half we actually got better with 10 men and started playing with more freedom and actually having a go at the defenders and getting them running the other way.

Second half we were maybe better than the first half and Murphy, Flynn and the new lad Scougall were excellent. They had chances but we did some good stuff the other way and had some moments of our own. We could have had a second and then should have had a pen (so should they first half probably).

On the whole it was a battling, committed performance and we showed some good stuff going forward when we had it. We defended in numbers and had a bit of luck today but then could have had a penalty too. We showed desire, kept it well when we could and nearly hung on for a win. The new players looked good and overall it was a positive display. I felt that most of the players did everything they could. The negatives is losing three players due to different reasons throughout the game. We now have a heavy legged and potentially depleted squad to come for games coming up and with further fixtures to squeeze in; it is going to be a real struggle over the coming weeks. We just need to eek out a few wins and somehow get away from the mess we are in but it is not going to be easy.

Fulham – They made eleven changes and of course many of the big guns such as Parker, Berbatov, Sidwell, Hangeland, Dempsey etc but still had a team full of quality and of course would have expected to win despite the conditions. They were much better than Villa but were not brilliant by any stretch and although on chances and possession they controlled long spells they did not create that many clear chances. First half they had a few half chances and had a good appeal for a spot kick and would have felt they were very hard done by to be a goal behind.

Second half they actually maybe did not play as well but had more chances. Of course having the man advantage helped hugely and they could see more of the ball and move it side to side. In the final third they did not maybe make enough of the ball and a few scrambles and the one hit the bar stood out but cannot remember Long making save after save. However they of course were much the stronger as the game went on as you would expect and they chucked Bent and Taarabt on and went for it as they did not need a replay (as we did not of course).

I felt at the back they had some really ponderous players and Senderos was one who looked so easy to get at Murphy had a good game against the young lad Passley. You can see why they have struggled but of course it was a very much different side so you have to take that into account too. They have a lot of very old players and then some really young players and if they do manage to stay up then they need to bring in some more quality you are sure.

Karagounis got on the ball a lot and was asked to dictate play from deep and the lad Tankovic, a young Swedish guy looked very good when he got running at the United defence. Kasami also looked a talent. I am sure they will expect to win comfortably in the replay as they did against a better side (Norwich) a few weeks ago. Still you never know, we did it at Villa so if they remain disciplined and play well on the break we may have a chance if we keep it solid for the opening half hour or so.

Long 7/10 – Thought at times he still looked hesitant and a few crosses or through balls (the one of the penalty appeal in the first half) he dithered when he should have been quicker. Made a few smart saves and his handling on actual shots was fine in difficult conditions. Despite them having a lot of the ball though he did not have that many saves to make and you would have been disappointed if he had let any of them in. He had little chance on the goal on a well driven low shot. His kicking was poor again as he kept kicking the ball out (not sure everyone was intended as we were hanging on). Bit fortunate in the first half when he maybe could have been penalised and sent off after the clash on Rodallega when there was definite contact.

Brayford 7.5/10 – Looked good and not far off our man of the match. Fairly athletic and mobile, he got up and down the wing, attacked when he could and showed some decent touches. Fairly big in terms of height/size. Made some good tackles and interceptions and used the ball well. Looks a big improvement on McMahon.

Hill 7/10 – Steady performance eventually after a shaky start and got better as the game went on. He actually made some mistakes early on that led to chances to for them with a few moments of indecision and slices but got stronger and was better when he went second half. He was solid, making good blocks and tackles and felt even though they had some chances we limited them for the most part.

Collins 7.5/10 – Thought he battled hard all game and the best he has played for some time. Yes he made a few very ‘basic’ clearances and was mostly keeping it simple but he did well to head/kick and block all game and I felt second half he was resolute with the rest of the back four. Now needs to step up his game with Maguire probably out for a bit I feel.

Maguire 7/10 – He was maybe our stand out player for long spells in the first half as he read the game well, made some good interceptions and then of course went on the run that led to the goal. He got a kick off the ball and struggled on in the second half but was clearly struggling. Not sure he will be available Wednesday and he may be out for few weeks sadly.

Coady 7/10 – Played well and fought hard. He did his best to disrupt some very strong technical players and got his foot in and tried to use it when he could. It got harder for him when Doyle was sent off and was having to resort to being mostly a defensive midfielder and was hard as most of his work was off the ball. With Doyle out will now get a run in the team you would think.

Murphy 8/10 – Very good and our stand out player again. He drove at defenders al game and showed some excellent dribbling that got defenders on the back foot. He looks a completely different player in terms of his confidence and is one of our main threats. Seems to be getting stronger and fitter too. They have to leave him in the side and not keep taking him in and out.

Flynn 7.5/10 – Thought first half he was not really in the game that much and did not really get at his man but after the break he improved immeasurably and had some excellent runs and efforts. Had one shot saved and should have had a penalty after another fine run. Some real drive and fearlessness combined with no little skills. The play he has shown post Xmas has been a far cry from the timid, ineffective player we saw for the previous 2 seasons. Had to keep it up.

Doyle 1/10 – First half he was ok as he got stuck in, helped limit some of their creative players and did what he was supposed to be. He did gave them a chance when he gave the ball away and Rodallegla got in. Then basically let the side down big time and cost us any chance we had of winning the game. He had clashed with David before and got a cut but to be honest he had initiated that challenge too then completely off the ball decided to ‘do him.’ Just ridiculous and should be fined the maximum wages. Brandy was bombed out after his sending off. Will Clough do the same to Doyle? This guy is no captain. Captains lead by example but he has proved year after year he just lets us down when it matters. He actually has been playing well recently and for all the criticism he gets he has played well and will be missed for a crucial run of games.

Baxter 7/10 – Showed some neat touches and had some of our only real other efforts on goal. Actually probably wish he had done better with a few chances he had where he did not get much purpose on the shot. Got into good areas and in the second half linked well with others as at times we broke well. A clever footballer that will benefit as we get hopefully get better players around him.

Porter 7/10 – Did well with his hold up play and won quite a bit in the air. He linked well with Baxter for a few bits of play and then got in front of his man to score a well taken goal. He went off at the break with a hamstring injury and it meant it was hard for us with the physical presence up top not there (although the players who played in his position/s did well). Not sure he deserved man of the match as BT Sport gave him (only played a half) but a better performance.

Subs-

Scougall 7.5 – Came on and played as maybe the most advanced forward at times and looked really impressive. Tiny physique and very small height wide. He looks a very promising player. Stronger than you would think and showed some lovely touches and dribbling. Looked completely fearless as he drove at men and tried to make things happen. Really looking forward to seeing more of him.

Harris – Came on for the injured Maguire and went to left back which I believe is his bets position. Had a bit of a shaky start but did alright as the game went on and contributed to the backs to the wall effort as we managed to hold on. He may come straight into the side now with Hill maybe moving inside.

McGinn – Brought on for Baxter as we tried to go more solid. First thing he did was just kick it to nowhere when he should have had fresh legs. He did it again soon after. He will now come into the team and needs to show better form than he has recently if we are to control the key central area of the field.

Manager rating – Clough 8/10 – Had them motivated and he picked a relatively attacking team giving Coady a start instead of McGinn which was the right move. Not his fault that Maguire got injured and his captain let him down. We just need to start turning these improved performances into league wins.

Officials – Mariner had a difficult game in albeit difficult conditions. I actually felt he reffed it sensibly for the most part and let things go a lot of the game and tried to make it flow as much as he could. However despite doing ok in general play, he missed two blatant penalties for both sides with ours the strongest appeal and a stone well penalty. Some refs would have sent Long off for the one in the first half that maybe was not quite as certain but there was still plenty of contact. The red card he got spot on. It was blatant and stupid and Doyle’s reaction said it all (he was taking off his arm band before he went off).

Crowd – A very disappointing crowd and despite the poor weather you would have felt we would still got near to 20,000 (for all the pre match talk of how little Fulham would bring I would guess it was around 1,200 that actually came). The club put on ticket offers and made it as cheap as they could really (having the ticket office shut yesterday afternoon was pretty lame I must admit) and people still did not come. The years of decline and general disappointment from the club does seem to have had an effect as despite it being on TV and awful weather many just did not feel like bothering.

I'd add a +1 on all those scores, but then I have been doing for the last 18 months - 7s and 8s?! We more than matched a PL side!!!

That doesn't really stack up. We got 14,000 the other year against Villa, with 3,000 Villa fans there. And things were much rosier at the time.

Good report BTW

Great effort today from the lads.
Murphy & Flynn have played very well these last few weeks. We need to start getting some points on the board in the league though or this cup run could end up costing us.

Exactly, Fulham are simply not a draw.

Seen a couple of their fans describe today as our "cup final", not entirely sure they could have been further from the feelings of quite a number :)

Enjoyed that. Were looking strong and well organised. We have a little flair to add to the grit an determination. Murphy is good for the dollar and everytime baxter is in possesion he does well with the ball.

This team with this manager will keep us up and we may very well triumph in the return fixture.

If we do and then get past forest/preston i want it to be the stink as we deserve to go at em home or away.

Thank you for today blades :-)

Blimey Deadbat, Brayford FAIRLY athletic ?, the man is lightening & quality. Your report, spot on as usual. I thought we rode our luck at times when we had ten men but fully deserved to. In my opinion there wasn't one bad performance, with Brayford, Murphy and Scougall standing out. Man of the match for me was Baxter who is definitely becoming more of an influence for us. Doyle wasn't having a bad game , but hope NC sticks another three matches on top of what he is going to get, let us all down today, behaviour like that makes my blood boil.

Thanks for the report as ever. I would though echo and earlier poster and add 1 mark for each player.

Cheers Deadbat,

Strange how we played better football with 10...thought that looked a pretty average Fulham team to be fair Snd the defenders, as you say looked dodgy.

New lads looked very promising.
Please get to these levels in the league and put some points in the board.

UTB!

Doyle's absence will probably mean he and Flynn start the next three, with Coady in the middle. No bad thing that.

I thought all players did well too. Extra pluses for Brayford, Maguire, Hill as centre half, Flynn, Murphy and Scougall.

Regarding the balance of the starting eleven, I think they found too much space between our defence and midfield first half. They had a lot of possession and our wide men had to stay wide to keep an eye on their full backs, rather than tucking in and helping out Coady and Doyle. The latter two struggled to cover enough ground. Fulham had loads of possession and our defence may have dropped a bit too deep.

We scored against the run of play though, great run by Maguire.

After the sending off I think our players actually gained a spark. Without the captain, the players seemed to take on greater responsibility and we saw some great runs from deep. I also think our players became a little quicker to close them down and get into the right defensive positions.

I think we could have been even more effective if we had some pace up front. Baxter is disappointingly slow and even as a striker he likes to come for the ball rather than trying to get in behind the defence. With Porter not good at that either we're not making the most of our counter attacks and the good running on the ball from Murphy, Flynn and Scougall. A few times it looked so exciting, but then they were eventually crowded out, when they should (ideally) have been slipping the ball through to a quick striker.

Maybe we could have tried swapping Murphy and Baxter? In any case I don't think Baxter behind a slow target man will be good enough in the long run. We need someone who can threaten the space behind defences.

But I think we'll get there, slowly. Clough is just starting to build his team and I have great faith in him knowing what he's doing.

I would have brought Miller on for Baxter with 20 remaining.Baxter had a very good game but was knackered.

Just a quick point about Doyle's actions as captain.

Did people say the same when Morgs was captain? I know he was a leader in a team that was half decent, but he still managed to break the record for the most red cards shown to a Blades player.

I'm fairly certain Morgan was criticised a fair bit when he got himself stupid red cards. And of course he could actual lead a dog to a post and wasn't presiding over a team in apparently terminal decline.

Obviously I speak for me alone, but Morgan is a slightly tainted Blades hero for that very reason. A super leader with an unfortunate tendency to lapse into thuggery. He improved with age but it never left him.

It's also why Simon Tracey has that asterisk by his name in the pantheon of Blades Legends. That rush of blood to the head and the red cards in brought. Of course, at least Tracey and Morgan made it there, Doyle won't unless we actually go on and win the Cup.

Was really impressed with Brayford as well, nice to have a bit of pace in the full back positions again. He made some cracking tackles and interceptions that sparked some good counter attacks. Looking forward to seeing him take over from McMahon - we've really lacked mobility and pace in that position since Lowton left. Hopefully he'll be the answer.
