A new manager and the return of the much-loved Chris Wilder did not make one iota to the performance and result, at a wet and miserable Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon. Despite all the pre match talk of the returning Wilder leading to the inevitable new boss bounce, the Blades served up another totally ineffectual performance when they created few chances and looked lethargic all over the field. The visiting Addick were good value for the victory, as they were the only side who create anything all game and whilst it came late, the winner was the least they deserved. A toothless Blades, seemed to have no idea how to even fashion any kind of meaningful opportunities and the longer the game went on, the less cohesive the Blades looked. The visitors were always the more likely to nick the points and in the end, substitute Oloafe slid in the late winner in front of the jubilant visiting supporters. United’s dreadful form sees them completely rooted to the foot of League One with zero points from the season and seemingly already mired in a battle to stay in the league, never mind thoughts of getting promoted which now surely need to be consigned to fantasy land.

Wilder made changes in his first game as Ogbene, Campbell and Hamer came back into the side at the expense of Barry, Cannon and Brooks. Tanganga, McGuinness and Matos made their home debuts and Tanganga was made captain. Wilder got a rapturous ovation as a flag welcomed back their messiah before kick-off. The ground barely had a spare seat as an expectant home crowd wanted to see a different kind of United performance that would finally see some excitement. It was the first game of safe standing also which hopefully would accompany a more positive afternoon.

The game began in scrappy fashion and the visitors settled quicker with a low shot just past Cooper’s post and then another effort blocked. United could not find any real momentum and despite Ogbene having plenty of the ball, they did not realty create anything. Another opportunity saw an effort screwed wide from the Addicks, as the crowd’s initial excitement started to wear off. Bell got a booking for delaying a free kick but Hamer was then booked for going to ground as he was adjudged to have caught his man late. Charlton were having joy down the right with Campbell having the run on Godfrey, whose struggles continued from the defeat at Ipswich. The best chance of the game arrived when Jones header goalwards and Cooper had to spring to his right to make the save. The rebound was driven into bodies as United survived. United tried to find some momentum but a weak Hamer free kick was the closest they came. It had been a poor game, played in difficult conditions but the Addicks had the better chances and had looked the more likely.

After the break, United at least had a spell of play even if there was not any concerted pressure and Peck’s woeful shooting was in evidence on two occasions. Charlton were not going forward as much but United’s inability to penetrate, either down the sides or the wing, meant the game was lacking any chances either way. Barry and Seriki came on for Ogbene and Godfrey. It made little difference in terms of any head of steam and United really looked clueless how to attack and force any pressure. Campbell and O’Hare were replaced by Cannon and Chong, as the home side desperately looked for a spark but found nothing to get the supporters excited.

Docherty had a header saved from Cooper and then following a break, the ball bounced around and nearly was converted as the away side, after sitting in for a period, sensed the game could be won. They also made changes and Leaburn caused problems with his height and the ball pinged around but United survived. As the game drifted into the final moments, the home fans seemed resigned to a point being the best they could expect. However, they could not even get that as the ball forward was won in the air and Bree got down the right away from Burrows, sent over a cross and OLOAFE stole in unmarked and guided it under Cooper to win the game at the death for Charlton. The four minutes of stoppage time, saw Charlton look more likely to score again that the beleaguered Blades, who look an absolute shell of the side that competed for promotion last season.

United – Thought we were awful again. New manager but same old pitiful performance with little fight, drive or any kind of creativity. I am not sure this was any better than the last home game v Millwall. At least towards the end of that we looked like scoring. Today, we never laid a glove on a poor Charlton side who realised the longer the game went on, they could go and win the game and deservedly did so in the end. To start with, we began at least winning a few tackles and we looked a bit more organised but this quickly faded away. I thought the players would come out scrapping and fighting and get the crowd going but it never happened. We were flat from almost the off and Charlton had the best 3 chances first half. We never looked like scoring all game at all. Hamer had a weak free kick saved but outside of that, nothing. A few long-range shots off target but we never got behind Charlton, never worked up any kind of sustained pressure or forced them back. We lost many big challenges/aerial duels and as the game went into the final 15-20, Charlton sensed we had not idea and they started to realise the game was up for grabs. They had a few more half chances and then in the end, they won the high ball, got a cross in unopposed and converted the winner with no challenge in the box. They fully deserved it. A poor side who will struggle to stay up but had 3 or 4 better chances than we had all game – we created nothing. We never got down the sides, never passed it down the middle and never worked up any kind of steam. We were completely clueless with weak, slow players who never moved and were stationery all game. Cannon rightly will get hammered but Campbell was as bad. Ogbene showed a few bits early but faded badly. Hamer was careless with the ball and O’Hare completely anonymous. We got nothing from the full backs. The subs made us even worse – which was hard to believe as the starters were terrible. We looked so slow and weak and just like we had no confidence we could make anything positive happen. I cannot recall more than 2 or 3 passes of note in a row and when we did it, it was all sideways and backwards. The new signings, Tanganga apart, look poor I am afraid.

I was completely bored by the games at the moment. We have gone from no entertainment but winning most weeks last season to now being completely dull but losing every week. Despite all the furore over Wilder’s return, it was no different, albeit only one game but showed the problems were starting to set in long before even Selles spell, right towards the end of last season. Maybe it will take time but I worry, despite all the spin over his return, we were seeing many performances like this in the final few months last season and probably why they sacked him harsh as it sounds. Suddenly he is seen as a returning messiah who will turn it all around. I hope he will but this team needs to wake up and fast. We were right to sack Selles and should have kept Wilder after what he did but I was concerned whatever happens managerially, with the loss of key men Souza and Anel and how the players fell apart when under pressure, we maybe would regress no matter what. That is exactly how it is panning out and the weak-minded players now seem to be unable to even muster up 20 minutes of good play let alone a half or a full game. A point is not even attainable. The team and players are a spineless set of losers and at the moment their efforts are getting exactly what they deserve and we are the laughing stock of the EFL. They seem not to be bothered by this or surely they would have come out revved up and motivated. Today, they served up the same timid approach, not passing forward, too many touches and no one taking any responsibility.

They cannot keep feeling sorry for themselves but they look a weak bunch who seemingly lack character and the drive to get us even a single point. They cannot keep blaming tactics and coaching. At some point they have to stand up but the likes of Campbell, Peck, O’Hare, Hamer, Burrows and Cooper have fell off a cliff and throw in the additions who have had minimal impact and this squad looks like the one that we saw at Luton, where everyone said they are too good to go down. The reality is that we are an eighth through the season and we look all the world like a relegation side. Promotion is completely gone. We now need to just focus on getting a point. Heck, even a goal and then we can start to think about moving off the bottom of the table. At the moment, we are the worst side in the league by any metric and I cannot see where the results are coming from. We are now close to 8 hours without a goal and never really looked like breaking this in this spell (save for a few late efforts at home to Millwall). I do not see how they turn it around. Loads will be made about formations etc but that really is desperate stuff to look at how we are playing. Sure, we could play 2 up front or 5 at the back with wing backs but unless our players take responsibility and win loose balls, drive at opponents, and try and make things happen, then we will keep losing game. It seemed like the change would signal an uplift and I thought we would win today but we were miles off it and it was simply the game cowardly performance where the oppositions wanted it more all over the field. I am rapidly running out of patience with these players who sadly I dislike to almost a man. If we dumped the lost over the next 12-18 months I would not care but we might be in League One before we do this. We have compounded it by signing even more dross on long term deals (McGuinness, Matos, Godfrey and Chong really look a waste of the resources we have) to add into the lightweight and inept players we already have at the club. Wilder has realised what a job he has and how poor this squad is. A bloated set of losers where not one player is taking hold of games but sheepishly just accepting losing every single game without even much of a fight. We go to Oxford (2nd bottom) next week and I do not see anything to suggest we will get anything. This side seems to have mailed it in already but with so many on long term deals, I am not sure what we do. Wilder can scream and shout but if we continue to lose, then what does he do? It is a complete mess and I see nothing to suggest it is doing to turn it around. We are only basing it on what we did last year but actually only a handful were in the side that lost out at Wembley.

Ratings:

Cooper 4.5/10 – Made a decent save from the header first half and saw a few shots go past his post. The goal I felt he could have done better but was close range but another that went under him.

Godfrey 2.5/10 - Another poor showing where the lad Campbell got in on his side and caused him problems. He never got tight to him and was ball watching a lot. He has looked a poor signing who seems slow, hesitant and not sure where to be positionally which is crazy for someone who played for England. For the supposed big wages, looks a complete bomb scare whose career is only heading on a downward trajectory.

Burrows 4/10 – He had a few bits of link play with Hamer but his final ball was poor and he seemed hesitant when well forward first half. As the game went on, his threat diminished and he took some poor touches and started to give it away sloppily. The goal once again he was not tight enough as the ball came in from his side. Looks a complete shadow of the player from last season.

McGuiness 4.5/10 – He did ok at times in terms of winning headers and duels but then a few times he got under the ball and on the goal it seemed to be another he lost. Seems to shrink in challenges that really matter. He looks a very ordinary player and not really much of an upgrade on Robinson.

Tanganga 5/10 – Our best defender in that he at least competed and won some of his battles with his opponents. Used the ball better than most and did come out of the defence with some pace and urgency. However, I thought he made a few mistakes also with one second half nearly leading to a good chance and both him and McGuinnes failed to win a big header in the build up to the goal.

Matos 3.5/10 – He started winning a few tackles and getting about but as the game went on, became a headless chicken and did not keep his position and made us easy to get through. His technical ability on the ball leaves a lot to be desired as he kept overrunning it or taking a heavy touch. I thought he did not really protect the defence much and as the game went on, we lost control in this area and he became ineffective. He looks quite limited sadly from what I have seen.

Peck 5/10 – He has had a lot of criticism I have seen after the game and I agree his performances this season has seen a big drop off (with most others) but today he at least did not hide even though not everything came off. He got on the ball and tried to bring it out and forward. He lost it a few times and he ended up losing one that nearly led to a goal conceded. However, he at least tried to be attacking but his shooting is totally woeful – for someone who aspires to be a top player, he must improve in this area as he will never go much higher if he cannot shoot or even look like a threat. He has had a poor season (not helped by shape) but I thought he was one of few who showed he cared and at least tried to influence things/

Hamer 5/10 – Our most dangerous player and he gave it away consistently. That sums up how bad we were! His first 5 or 6 contributions all went to Charlton as he took poor touches or overplayed it. He continued to try and play forward but was sloppy. Heard his booking was harsh but he did dive in and another caution showing his complete lack of discipline. He had the free kick and a few other balls forward but despite all the talk about where he should play, he looked just as ineffective on the left as in the centre. He has been really poor this season. Meant to be our main man but barely influenced games at all. I am not sure he was as sought after as many felt and as it stands, he will have minimal interest you would think when January rolls around – but I do think he will move on then as he won’t want to be part of a relegation scrap.

O’Hare 2/10 – Dreadful and summed up his completely anonymous season. I am not sure I can recall one thing he has done right apart from the touch in the lead up to our only goal. Been swatted off the ball easily, run around with no real plan of how to influence games and looks pitifully weak. He has not been able to contribute anything on or off the ball. Last season, even when not on it, he would buzz around, press and close down. This year he has offered nothing whatsoever. Looks unfit and off the pace but he is not even working hard. Just a complete passenger.

Ogbene 4/10 – Thought he started ok with a few neat touches and runs down the side and at least stretched the opposition a bit but as the game went on, his influence lessened and he started to come back on himself. I thought he was meant to be explosive and really quick but he seemed to lack any kind of burst to get past his man? I was hoping he would give us something we had not seen but was another who failed to get down the side or behind his opponent.

Campbell 1.5/10 – His performances have been to be frank pathetic. He has not moved, he has barely put any effort in and looks completely devoid of energy. He stands still, does not win headers, does not challenge or even offer a nuisance factor. Seemed happy that Wilder was back but his performance today was another limp, lifeless showing where he looked like he was just going though the motions. The lad Leaburn showed more life in 20 minutes than he has all season. I’d drop him but for who – the even worse Cannon or the young One? We really do have no options up there with Ings injured.

Subs –

Barry 1.5/10 – An absolute passenger. Brought on to at least give us an attacking impetus but we got worse when he came on for Ogbene. Between, him, Brooks, Cannon, Campbell and O’Hare, we have an absolute collection of lightweight passengers who all have the heart of a pea and seemingly no not have the fight/desire to be a competent Championship professional footballer. Barry came on and gave it away, passed it or ran it out. That was between just losing the challenge whenever anyone as much as blew on him. Woefully out of his depth and on the evidence we have seen, he is nowhere near this level being too weak and cowardly when on the ball. An awful signing so far but not alone.

Seriki 3/10 – He was not much better than Godfrey. Ran forward a bit but he often just fouled his man or overran it. Defensively he was out of position and then on the goal, completely ball watching. We do not have a competent full back in the club sadly (harsh on Burrows but how it is at the moment).

Chong 3/10 – I said to my Uncle, whenever I have seen him for other clubs, he looks like a player that runs out but achieves little due to poor technique and composure and after 3 cameos, not seen anything to change that opinion. Ball shoots off him when it comes to him and positionally seems to have no clue where he should be. What have the scouting department seen in this lad to suggest he can make a difference? Another headless chicken.

Cannon 1/10 – Had one touch, a flicked header near the end. Before that, he did a great job of hiding behind his man, trying hard not to get his shirt dirty and looking again like he had won a bet to play a game of professional football. We did not look like scoring with Campbell on – but looked even less likely with him on. I would rather One have a game. At least might put some effort in. There was one moment the ball came near him and he just stood there and then they ran away and he did not even break out of a walk. One of the worst centre forwards I have ever seen play for United. Even Connor Sammon and Paul Williams at least offered something in the odd game. This lad is an absolute horrendous footballer who had not one single positive attribute to his game.

Soumare – Came on right at the end for Matos but not sure he can be criticised for the time he had on the pitch.

Manager: Wilder 2/10 - If we had played like that under Selles, we would have been loudly booed off (and in fact have in other home games) and I am not advocating that but although it was only one game, we saw nothing different. I have to be honest, I thought he would have got them really fired up and winning tackles, races, headers and at least forced them back. I thought we would have at least ‘a’ spell of concerted pressure or some chances/play in the box. We saw none of that and in the end, it was no different to under Selles. We did not change our approach/tactics at all really – yes we had Matos with Peck (but we did v Ipswich too). We had Hamer and Campbell back and Ogbene started but we never built up any kind of steam and in the end, we lacked both desire and quality. As the game went on, we looked even less likely to score and thought if anyone would win it, that Charlton would be the one to snatch it and they did in the end. I thought we would see some of the player want to show it was the previous manager and come out fired up but they served up the same abject performance we had seen under Selles. Wilder did what Selles did and threw different men on but we got even worse and looked even less likely to even register an attack, let alone create anything. United towards the Kop have never looked as less likely to score a goal, as this season – even in the Premier League – versus some really ordinary sides. Wilder will have another week at training but if he does not get a response in the next few games, I wonder where we go from here? Somehow we must hope Wilder can motivate them to improve but the early signs (when it normally happens for a new manager) today were worrying.

Charlton – Like most of the sides we have played this season, I did not think they were great but every side has been better than us and deserved to beat us. They were no exception. They were not threatening all game but had a few moments first half and the only ones to test either keeper properly. They caused issues down the right side and at times got in too easily. They coped with us easily the other way. Second half it became scrappy and they seemed to have settled for a point without being worried but as the game went on threw forwards on that were far more dangerous than any of ours. They started to have more chances and in the end deservedly got the winner by putting a good cross in and finishing it. I think they will be near the bottom and that shows how bad we are. They played smatterings of decent stuff but were well organised and defended well. However, they were competing more than us in the 50-50 stuff and won a lot of the loose balls. Their desire was simply better than ours but they also had more dangerous attacks despite maybe not having as much ball. Had great celebrations at the end. Nathan Jones is a bit of a prick but they played a perfect away performance as have every other team that have come down here.

Opponent Man of the Match – Tyreece Campbell. Much better than ours. Looked a threat all game and forced Godrey back. Bree put some good balls in down the right too. Leaburn was a handful when he came on.

Opponent Weak link – Bell got a booking and could have had another for the foul on Hamer.

Referee / Officials – Ben Toner. The above might have led to a red card and some I think would have reached for the second yellow. The Hamer one some said was not a yellow or even a foul but when you go in like that (left his feet and dived) you are running the risk. The rest of the game, the Charlton fans were more annoyed than ours feeling he favoured us which I am not sure about but I cannot recall us having many bad decisions other than the one above? He did get in the way of Hamer a few times but the officials were a long way from the reason we lost.

Crowd/Day Out – It was a packed crowd (save for a thousand or so in the away end and the bits at the back of the Kop which have not been put on general sale in the new safe standing section) and was expectant at the start. The big Wilder flag was good (although he looked in pain in his expression – maybe a foreboding sign!) but quickly the game became as many before it and the Charlton fans mocked the atmosphere. It became very flat and at the end the same frustrations set in. I do wonder if the struggles continue, if we will see the same level of despondency we saw under Wilder last season. The season has been a total nightmare and sees no sign of changing. Despite a 30,000+ crowd, the players gave absolutely nothing to get the fans excited and served up another pitiful showing. They will get a right old going over if we fail to win at Oxford and struggle in the next home game. The patience has run out with many supporters with their complete and utter lack of any kind of performances.

A little harsh on Tanganga with the score IMO. He was one of the few bright performances of the day I felt. Otherwise a fair assessment. We are bang in trouble.

When Cannon and Barry were on, our shape up top I could not identify a centre forward and it was like a trapezium when you needed a rectangle

He was ok but made 2 or 3 mistakes that nearly saw them in

I am not sure one player comes out with much credit at all

We had teams in positons today - rather than gaps all over but it made no difference. We never won the ball and when we had it, we never moved it with any purpose

The players look completely clueless in everything they do. They seemed to be waiting for Hamer to find a moment of magic. Outside of this, I have no idea how we are going to even create a chance. Our best efforts were Peck's horrendous long range shots. That is how bad it is. The team is a mess and the likes of Campbell, Cooper, Burrows, Cooper, O'Hare need to wake up or will end up League One players in a year.

I still don't see what O'Hare can do as a central link player in a team with 2 CMs who can't or won't play a forward pass. Peck does not progress the ball from deep. He gives it to Burrows and hopes he'll do it

If I'm trying to find any positive at all from individual marks, I think Burrows and Peck were better, after being pretty awful so far this season. That's not exactly high praise, as it was a really low bar.

Of the many negatives, I think it's worth pointing out that Cannon did nothing to even deserve a mark. Again. At some point the kid just needs to be left out all together. It's quite difficult to consistently be this ineffective and he's now venturing in to the territory of our worst signing ever. I don't like saying that, but it's an unavoidable conversation now.

Excellent write up.

He isn't 'the messiah' though. Last season proved it sadly.

No fight when it counts and include CW in that.

No substance behind the noise and heat of his return.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen o’Hare kick the ball further than 5 yards. Is there any evidence he can do?
He’s quite frankly fucking wank.
Get him out of the side and give us a fighting chance to stay up.

Because Deadbat nailed it this side have the heart of a pea and we want to pray to God we can survive

I am worried he is going to become Mousset 2.0

Stoke fans warned us he always had the ability, but went missing alot and didn't always show it enough.

Had a hell of a season last year, but missed out on promotion and the rumoured move to Everton over the summer never materialised.

Now not seeing any runs off the shoulder, any pressing the keeper/defence.

Wouldn't at all be surprised to see him pick up some 'niggles' or 'injuries' soon...

Very harsh on Cooper, harsh on peck as well. Generous on McGuinness
Peck isn't at the standard required. Last season he was bang average, this season much worse (TBF not on his own). I don't get the love in for a player that is easily knocked off the ball, constantly gives the ball away, can't dribble or shoot. I guess it's because he's young, likes a slide tackle and pats the badge when we win?
For me young Sydie is a hype job that constantly plays and constantly underperforms.
If Blaster wouldn't have suffered a serious injury Peck would be out on loan in L1.

His shooting needs to improve, the rest of that is nonsense but each to their own.

This is as bad as that Micky Adams side that went down a set of wankers with no fight in them.

As for the fans youre right atmosphere was shit doesnt look good we dont stay till end as we know there is no goals in side.

Since that Friday night v Cov in the main we have been wank, spineless and depressing.

Wilders team today was equally as spineless as Selles. But cos Wilders a Blade suppose he gets away with it?

Comedy football at end putting that useless fucker Cannon n co on.

God help us

Not a chance these players will avoid relegation.

Dreading playing the pigs now !

How fucking bad is that !!!!!!!!!!
Changes in personnel and system will hopefully do the trick, which will then hopefully kick start the season and boost confidence amongst the players, the question is, will CW make the changes? And will he make the right ones?

I agree to an extent but he has done nothing when he does receive it.

Whenever he does have it, he just falls over or gets outmuscled.

Off the ball he is supposed to press, harry and close. He has not done that this season.

We keep saying Campbell, O Hare etc get mo service and that is valid but the lack of movement ahead is as much of an issue.

The Peck error came as not one player moved into space. The whole team is completely static. I gave Peck and Hamer highest marks just cos they tried to at least find space and try things.

There are so many that you could argue need dropping but the ones who replace them are equally as poor

I don't think that CW gets a free ride, and things will turn quickly against him, if he doesn't stop the rot.

Agree about Cannon, the club now need to cut it's losses, just leave him on the bench until Jan and move him out on loan and hopefully he can find some form somewhere, but he is a complete liability at this club, One is a better option (and he is not at Champ level yet either!).

Peck tries things if he ever gets up the pitch. In the role he has as one of the 2, he just shuffles it around.

O'Hare is good when he gets the ball in attacking areas in front of CBs or between CB and full back. I honestly don't remember a single attempt to get the ball to him outside of a slow, stodgy move where we waited for Charlton to get into their ideal defensive set up. Expecting him to create on his own and when defences are set is a waste of time, he's not good at it.

Hamer and Burrows are our only players who'll even attempt an inclusive pass. It's untenable

Bring Mee in, either play 3 at the back or drop McGinn' and also Godfrey, a medium performance by Seriki is better than Godfrey.

There has also got to be a change in midfield, the two currently in the spots don't look like they can play together, too similar for me.

Could Ogbene play up top with Campbell, maybe to look at a pace attack working the channels?

Play Hamer as a No. 10 and leave Ohare out, they don't look quite right playing together at the minute as well.

When we get the ball into a dangerous position, we seem to be scared of potentially losing the ball by crossing it. We then recycle it doing that boring horse shoe shit round the edge of the box to the other side, where we still don't cross it. Eventually we get pressed backwads and the ball invariably ends up with Cooper, or we lose it.

It's a mess, it really is. We are in a relegation battle if this continues.

A bigger set of spineless arseholes you will not find. Wilders interview after the match boiled my piss, ‘Chaotic’. ‘Disgrace’ would be my chosen word. We all pull our tubes out at work all week to watch this shit? When we go down, and we will go down, these so called ‘stars’ will think they’re too good and piss off to pastures new. Good riddance in my book. Give me limited players who at least give a shit and I’m satisfied, Half of this rabble will be out on the piss tonight not giving a monkeys toss. They actually need to take a look at Wednesdays players, they actually give a shit.

I wouldn't have Cannon or Barry in the squad

Good write up, as usual.

Usually don't see the need to comment, but the Peck rating is insanity.
He's been woeful all season. He's not pulled a performance above 2/10 so far.

Good assessment as usual DB.

I think a very basic summary of our season so far would be that you never feel we are going to score (even a chance would be nice!), but every time the opposition come forward you feel like they’ll score.

All teams need to do is sit in & defend, we have no clue how to break them down & then we’ll give up so many soft chances

Compared to what we've seen ths season, I thought the first half was a mediocre but not shocking 6/10 performance. Which is an improvement. 2nd half we reverted to type.

I think we probably got a bit ahead of ourselves as fans. Was unrealistic to expect us to suddenly turn into worldbeaters overnight after losing every game so far
