Seeing the dvd for sale in the club shop, I came across the line up of the opposition.
Dennis Waterman XII match against a Tony Currie XII in 1986
Dennis' team was- Mick Miller, Ian Botham, Dennis Waterman, George Best, Chris Quinten, Geoff Hurst, Frank Worthington, Roy McFarland, Archie Gemmill, Bill McMurdo, Billy Bremner, Allan Clarke, Alan Hudson, Paul Heaton, Keith Edwards, Glenn Cockerill, Jimmy Johnstone, Bomber Graham.

Quite a handy side.

Chris Quentin was Brian Tilsley in Corrie. Why he left Gail no one will ever understand ...or was he killed off?

Bill Mcmundo?

he was stabbed outside a nightclub (brian, not chris)

Botham didnt play

Apart from the cricket Bothan gave us the great pub quiz question.

Three England captains that played for Scunthorpe. Keegan, Clemence, and Botham.

I never quite understood how Ivy and Bert Tilsley, who'd lived in Weatherfield all their lives, maanged to raise a son with a Geordie accent.
But Ivy had a Barnsley accent despite living in Weatherfield.

I am sure that I went to a TC testimonial in about 79.
I left sheffield in 84 and I am sure I saw TC testimonial well before.
Can anyone verify?

Currie's testimonial was in 1986. Eddie Colquhoun, Mick Speight and John Flynn all had testimonials in 1980 , so you may have gone to one of those (and Currie played in the Speight one). There were no testimonials in 1979.

Remember going to a testimonial, sure it was for currie, earlier than 86 though. Remember mick miller being the 'turn' for the evening. Did a brilliantly running gag about noddy being paraletic while driving the noddy car. Then I won one of the raffles ( large teddy bear) which I then donated back. Myself,TC, and my mate young dave baker had our photos taken by the stir. Daves still got that black and white photo. Also remember seeing TC while on pub crawl and had a few drinks with him in Tommy Hoylands Sheldon. Happy days. UTB.

TC's testimonial remains the only time that I've ever sat on the Bramall Lane end.

Oh, and my mate's dad's favourite quiz question:

Q: Who captained England at cricket and Scotland at football?

A (after much umming and ahhrring from everyone in the vicinity): "Geoffrey Boycott and Kenny Dalglish."

I have a 2 main memories from this;

1 The Housemartins played on a stage set up on John St terrace and
2 Chris Quentin mooned the Kop.
Remember The Housemartins playing. I remember The Sharp Cuts too..Unless it was just a horrible dream, I remember half of Black Lace (Agadoo!) too..

Bill McMurdo was George Best's agent at the time. I'm sure Joe Elliott was in the team as well and got stetchered off. Paul Heaton could only play the first half because The Housemartins had a gig later that night.

There's a class cock up from Darrell Bentley on the commentary. It becomes obvious early doors he wasn't given a programme or team sheet for the game and therefore spends most of the first 10-15 minutes trying to guess who is who.

He believes for a moment that McMurdo is ex-Goodie Bill Oddie, which makes always makes me think why no place for Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden.. :)

He also has absolutely no idea who Paul Heaton is, before proclaiming later on that he was "backroom" staff who'd contributed to the testimonial fund.

Does anyone have a programme from TC's testimonial?

Don't think you remembered the Noddy routine entirely accurately...

I was so sure I had, I got rid of 99% of my programs but kept the testimonials for some reason and one from the first game I ever went to (boxing day 1972). Just been to look but the Currie one isn't there! Will be sorting the loft soon, it might be in there.
I have the testimonial programmes from Mick Speight, Colquhoun, Badger, John Flynn and Kenworthy.

From the Tony Currie testimonial I remember Paul Heaton having a stormer at left back, taking no prisoners in some of the tackles.
