A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to spend 90 minutes in the company of Tony Agana talking about his career for my blog. He was a genuine and open guy, with some great stories and we had a good laugh.

I have posted up the interview on my blog in 3 parts. The links are below if anyone is interested. I know some of you may have seen it via twitter, or the thread that someone started on Blades Mad, but in case you haven't...enjoy

I like this bit....

What really swung it was turning on to Cherry Street and seeing the stadium……BANG!...Bramall Lane….Oh My God…Where do I sign?

I remember the streaker! The photo actually made the front page of the green un, and my workmate pinned it to the noticeboard. Surely someone still has a copy?

i have my own tony agana story which i have posted before but just in case
we were presenting our MSc theses to the undergrads at SHU when i spotted TA sat in the front row.. our senior lecturer said 'yeah apparently he used to be a footballer!'.. to which i replied 'footballer! that's fucking tony agana'.. being the only local, non of the others knew who he was.. i didn't speak to him though.. basically i shit myself.. i was totally star struck

Great read and brought back some great memories that had faded like the Huddersfield match - we used to have some great followings there as we did on that day.

Special bond between players and fans in that era. Not sure we'll see the likes of it again cos of the way the game has changed.

The likes of Deane and Agana had and still have genuine affection and respect for United and the fans.

Agana struck me as the type of bloke who had the attributes and intelligence to go into management - maybe he was clever enough to steer clear.

I had the fortune of meeting Tony recently and asked him to sign an old Pro-Set card of Brian Deane which Deano had signed some years earlier (it's a permanent fixture in my wallet!).

They say 'never meet your heros' but I'm glad I did. Tony is a real humble gentleman and it was a pleasure to be in his company.

The never meet your Heroes line is one I used at the end of the third part. I also said how it was irrelevant where Tony was concerned. You're right an incredibly humble man.
