I was reading the other thread about Andy Taylor, and it got me thinking.

In June 2008, we had a strikeforce consisting of James Beattie, Jonathan Stead, and Rob Hulse. They've all since been sold (rightly or wrongly) for a total of around £5.25m.

In July 2009, we now have a strikeforce of Darius Henderson, Billy Sharp and Jamie Ward. These were bought for around £4.7m.

How can a strikeforce be so worse off in a year, whilst only making (roughly) a £525,000 profit in transfer fees?

hendo is out isnt he?
so we have 2 forwards???
Goals win games....

Has Henderson played for us yet???? It seems like he's always out injured or suspended. Is he Ebrell in disguise!!!!!!

Even when fit he isn't brilliant....

And we thought that Hulse's fitness would be a risk! Ha

indeed swiss.... im not a hendo fan... rather kept hulse!!

Keenzy you don't seem to be an 'any player at united fan' at the moment :D
Since when did you become such a cynic?

At the moment? I've not been a fan of him at all.

Players like monty though are worth their weight in gold!

Funny how things have changed for Monty, I was away at Donny this season when he came on and got booed by some Blades. Just shows the character of him to battle through to become one of the only players we can agree on at the moment.

Morgs in a way is the same. Thought he was immense again 2nd half of the season

I am still wishing we never signed Henderson.

He was never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever going to fill the void left by Beattie.

We should never have signed Henderson... Or BT... or Billy... just kept the Hulse, Webber and Stead and i'm sure we'd have been ok.... But then again Robinson gave Robbo the Blankety Blank cheque book and pen so we'd never have been ok

When we signed BT it looked like we had money and were going somewhere. Just unfortunatly McCabe chose Robson to manage the team.

We didn't need a £4million striker in the Championship.... we needed a few things elsewhere

Well we did and he repaid us with goals.

I dont see it as money wasted really.

Although selling him for the same or less than we paid for him now that is money wasted.

In reality BT was a swap for Jags.

so from that deal we recouped £3.5m, though take away his wages, which I imagine was a lot more than what Jags was on.

Because Blackwell hasn't got the balls to stand up and say he doesn't want these players to go.

Mind you, I would imagine that the Stead and Hulse sales were down to Blackwell.

I've noticed that you're not Blacky's biggest fan, Robbie?

I think that Ward will score quite a few this season if him and Hendo can link up they promise on occasion. Sharp will run about as per usual and probably be as unlucky as he usually is. Then there's Julian Gray to add to the equation as he can also play up top, and I'm sure he'll pop in with his fair share of goals.

*Fingers crossed*

Ward will never score many at this level. If he gets 10 it will be good for a player of his standard.

Sharp isn't unlucky, he's just a headless chicken.

Gray has scored 18 goals in 225 career appearances so I wouldn't be counting on him to score many either

I wish I had your confidence in our strikeforce!!
As it stands I am extremely worried for United in the new season and not just in the striking department.
We 'currently' have three strikers at the Lane who only managed 12 goals between them last season in the league. Hendo has shown to be hot headed on occasion and injury prone and all in all to be fair is just a mediocre target man at this level, Sharp has had a less than impressive time since coming back and will only score dribs and drabs under Uniteds style of play and I still question whether Ward is good enough for this level! Noone we have signed or been linked with has excited me in the slightest, other than Tommy S. but looks like hes off to Reading!
and Im afraid even with the promise of the new season it is hard not to be down beat, what with the impending will they/wont they/when will they? saga of the Kyles hanging over the club, the Paddy Kenny dibacle and the fact that the squad looks like a battleship grid with holes in a lot of areas and positions, it hardly inspires confidence!
At least last season we could say we had one good area in the defence, looking at it now and I cant say any area of the team looks particularly strong!
I also find it embarrasing that United are 'pleading poverty' ie. the McIndoe deal yet wasters like Hendrie and Carney, who have done little and will continue to do so are kept on the wage bill:confused:............
I know its down beat but thats how I feel at the minute and i know im not the only one

the board of course.
my point was more that paying him off pretty much lost us money for another signing, no matter who's fault is was

And if we hadn't have paid him off, we'd very possibly have been playing Hereford last season ..... :(

Anyway, back to our strike force, and I must say that it's not hugely inspiring, but I'd rather something happen with the midfield first.
