The power of an apology

An apology would probably go a long way, but it's still best not to hold your breath. Credit to James Shield at The Star for getting this so right. Looking forward to January.

Well said Jim but the chances of the shower that is SYP freely admitting a mistake are remote at best. When it comes to managing large-scale, potentially volatile events well let's just say that they haven't always followed best practice. They will hold the party line on this and won't budge unless forced to.

Good to see The Star reporting this and we do need a apology.

An apology would be nice, but it’ll never happen.

We are football fans, remember? We are treated as second class citizens, guilty until proven innocent, and as such have no rights on match days. We get held back, delayed, sent out of our way, held in stadiums for “our own safety”, charged eye-watering amounts for second division football, charged more eye-watering amounts for food and drink in football stadiums, charged even more eye-watering amounts for merchandise, and yet it still happens and we still pay.

We are still treated like criminals when we are guilty of nothing more than wanting to watch our team, and those responsible for policing can use the actions of a minority of morons to judge us all by, for our own “safety”.

We are the biggest cash-cow that sport has. And they will carry on milking and herding us like cattle, because they can.

Absolutely, I was saying this to someone at work yesterday - there's an assumption that all football fans are getting away with something. All of us are up to something dodgy, we just haven't been caught yet.

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of why SYP had charged Sheffield United more than the actual policing costs?

Perhaps the episode at Hillsborough was their warped way of netting off the money they owe us

Yep - it does indeed appear that “sorry seems to be the hardest word”.
Sorry Elton.

Bearing in mind SYP are on their 28th Temporary Chief Super in the last 7 minutes (slight exaggeration), you’d have thought someone might have twigged that the way to go would be to tell the... erm .... what do you call it now.... erm ... that’s it - the truth.

And not just a bit of the truth. The whole truth and nothing but the truth. Maybe that could become a staple of the way we do things around here......

As for SWFC’s part in all this. Well, as mentioned elsewhere - they are a shambles in every single department on and off the pitch.

This is the same police force that covered up the mass gang rape and grooming of untold thousands of young working class white girls by Pakistani Muslim men for decades.

Do you honestly expect anything else from them? SYP are an absolute disgrace top to bottom.
and are known for it throughout the profession .. apparently

2 Durham officers I spoke to were scathing of SYP's handling. The chatty Leeds fan PC who received a rousing chorus is "We all hate Leeds scum, on the way home, wasn't much more charitable.

i got sat to a Greater Manchester officer on a plane who said something similar.. hence the comment

This is the same SYP who 28 years after the disaster still maintain that they did nothing wrong despite being legally found guilty!!. The saying goes that there's always a rotten apple in every box or words to that effect. The whole of SYP are rotten from top to bottom. They'll never apologise to the blades fans after a few weeks as after 28 years they've not said sorry to the Hillsboro families on current timing blades fans might get an apology in 2045 but don't count on it.

He had his photo in the Star looking superior in his hi vis jacket ( rather than behind a desk where he spends most of his time) so of course it was a good day.

For me this is far more serious than just needing an apology. The police deliberately tried to create a riot. It was only due to the amazing and patient behaviour of the Blades fans that a serious incident was avoided.
There was absolutely no reason for the police to hold back the Blades fans. They could have escorted them in an orderly manner ensuring all arrived in good time for kick off.
By holding them back they created a situation all too close to the last disaster at that stadium. Thousands of fans arriving late, all wanting to get in as quickly as possible was a recipe for a repeat disaster. We all know that stadium is not fit for purpose, why the police risked a repeat disaster only they know.
Someone needs to be held accountable for this matter.

The only thing SYP are better at than getting it wrong is not admitting that they got it wrong.
That’s a great line Ricky.

Whenever there’s a derby the reaction is akin to being asked to take over the Israel-Palestine border policing.

How come both Manchester clubs manage to hold big matches without the insistence of bizarre kick off times?

In this case, they got one and still f’ed it up.

Happy to take double time no doubt for a largely cushy day at the footy...

And don't forget there's literally twice (nearly three times at Old Trafford) as many fans in attendance.

SYP consistently seem to make bad decisions where football is concerned. I still can't believe they're thinking of allowing the next Derby to take place on a Saturday lunchtime when the nearby city centre will be full (granted this Sheffield city centre)of shoppers.... What could possibly go wrong???
