The penalty that wasn't

Surprised nothings been said to be honest. From my angle I thought it was a brillaint tackle and then when he blew I thought he send him off.

Then to see him and the assistant change his mind was rather odd but at the same time it was great to see that sort of thing happen.

I haven't seen a replay, those who saw it on TV, was it, wasn't it?

linesman never gave it. The ref just pointed to the spot without even looking at his linesman. Whats the point of him being there if your not going to use him unless players have to tell you to go and talk to him

He got the ball just about and I was surprised the linesman over turned the decision. From the refs view it looked like a certain penalty though.

I thought that that decision going our way would lift us and help us play better but obviously not. :shakehead:

It wasn't a penalty, but I've seen them given. My very first impression was that it wasn't a penalty and I believe I may have displayed my frustration at the original decision through the medium of words quite loudly whilst in the Woodseats.

What Beagrie commented upon after the match, was that the referee gave it without looking at his linesman. Kenny vociferously protested, and pointed repeatedly to the linesman (who had not put the flag across his chest). It was only then that he changed the decision.

I knew at that point that we'd get piss all for the rest of the match.

Def not a penalty, but the ref didn't give what i thought was a cert pen for us for a foul on Squinny because he had overturned his decision earlier IMO.

I'm biting my fist a bit when typing this but I though it should've been given. Killa didn't touch the ball and his trailing foot took Hulse out completely. I'd have been livid if it happened to us. No-one else agree?

I personally didn't see any change in direction, pace or spin of the ball at the supposed point of contact, and without a conclusive angle or "snick-o-meter" that's what I based my opinion on.

We were high up on the other end of the pitch, so admittedly, we didn't have the best view.

From where we were, it looked like a right challenge and Rachyblade texted me to say that it was never a penalty.

It shouldn't take a mass crowd of players round the referee to get him to talk to his officials though... regardless of whether it was or wasn't.

This "respect the game" bollocks could have meant the penalty was awarded...

He did, I was watching him, first thing he did was look at his linesman who said no.... then he gave it anyway.

The linesman should be making the referee aware that he thought it wasn't and the referee should have consulted him without being prompted to if there was any doubt in his mind. Diabolical decision making whatever the outcome should have been.

I thought his studs got there myself, and there was a slight change in the direction of the ball, but it was marginal. Like I said, I've seen them given.

Whilst at the match (albeit at the opposite side of the ground) I thought he'd put in a trademark Killa wonder challenge.

Looking at the replay I don't think you could safely state either way so you have to give the benefit of the doubt.

The linesman however seemed to be muttering that he was "positive"... so Mr Pollock... why wait till 10 men have to beg the ref to speak to you to say this?

It could have been a penalty as there was marginal contact (on the replay) but would have been a wimpy call. Paid us back by letting the Hulse hand ball go, it took the hand (accidental or not, he did block the ball) to drop the ball at his feet.

I suppose it depends how certain the referee is as to whether he looks at his linesman or not. However, if he needed to consult him, he can't have been that certain.

Full respect for him though, to overturn his decision takes a big man.

It's a hard one to call for me, even with replays helping out. IMO he did get a touch of the ball, also it would appear the ball had already been over run and was going for a goal kick. Hulse also went down easily too. HOWEVER, it could easily be defined as a penalty, and the margin in touch by killa if any was minute.
