notice how theres no floodlights on the 1935 picture and just through the kop entrance a circular building , I had never noticed

the 1989 one looks weird. but i cant figure out why. id never have picked that as the lane if i didnt know it was. it looks different somehow. strange.

anybody have an aerial view of the 80s? they used it on the cover of match programmes once or twice i think.

Same toilets on the left hand side of the kop now as what there was in 1935...!

Wasn't that during the 3 day week, I'm sure we had the day off school to see TC score against WHU?

No, it was 22nd March 1975, under Wilson's Labour government. You are thinking of the two states of emergency caused by miners' strikes under Heath's Tory government in 1972 and 1974 and, in particular (I think), the one in Feb 72 when United did indeed have to play West Ham at the Lane on a Tuesday day time was fllodlights were not allowed. We won 3-0 and Dearden got all 3.

I think we might have played Ipswich on a Tuesday afternoon in March 74 losing 0-3 as well.

Yes, they put the programme up to £4

how much?!? jesus wept. i havent bought a programme since about 1995. they were ok when they were 40p, and had the real (well nearly) team line ups on the back. how much of the £4 is pages with just adverts on em?

I don't know, in fact I don't know why I still buy one. I have the last ten sat here waiting to be read. I promised I'd do it while I was off work. I'm back again Jan 2, not a one read so far................maybe tomorrow.

I don't think that top picture is from 1935, while the kop roof was put on in 1935 the John St stand was much earlier. Looks to me like a picture from the late 40's or even early 50's, the gap in John St is surely ongoing repairs to the bomb damage of 1940. Click http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1435214&page=7 for a better image.

I read it from the script that came with the photo, I think the terrace was short though before 36 and our cup exploits that year paid fot the gap filling according to the blurb with it, I cant confirm or deny it as I wasnt there, but if you read the war time reports the terrace was hit the bramall lane end, the worst damage being to the cricket pavillion

No, the John Street stand and terrace always extended as far as the kop. The photo which says it is from 1935 is clearly taken after the war and shows the stand after the bomb damage sustained during the blitz. The above photo of the bomb damage is of the John Street stand to the kop side of the old press box.

No the bomb dropped on the kop end of John St stand though there was damage on the other end too on the pitch, also there was the postponement of Utd v Oldham in the 70's due to the huge unexploded bomb found on Alderson Road and the old Arnold Laver woodyard was largely destroyed by fire maybe a stick from the same aircraft. Notice on the first picture the missing houses across John St, this suggests to me bomb damage.

Yep Shoot did a feature. Billy hits the Hammers 1-2-3

it seemed to me to be more likely a mid war time photo , but it did have 35 , I reckon its a typo and should be 45

I refer to a very similar document to the admirable souvenir programme of Saturday last.

"1855-1955 A Century of Cricket at Bramall Lane" (price 2/- 6d.)

It dates the same aerial photograph as 1953 and apart from patching up work to the German ad-hoc 'ground improvements'* notes that it predates the balcony on the pavilion front of 1954.

*Said volume has the bombs dropping on Thursday December 12, 1940 and as it is a near contemporary account I tend to believe it.

The cricket souvenir programme has many interesting photos and much more text than the recent football version. As an architect, I think its a bit of a shame that the cricket ground wasn't saved, there was also a bowling green at the corner of Cherry Street and Shoreham St. (beneath the tent at the top left of the photo) now sadly tarmacked.

The way it goes.....
