...and boy, did they! Not just the result, not just the injuries and suspensions which will cost us dear, but evidence that DW can't do the basics.
Before the game I was surprised that, with Ertl on the bench, he picked LJF in central defence, 'He's no central defender.' I thought. I was right. I also thought Cressie should have made way for Hoskins at half time, given the games coming up. In the end, events made the decision for DW, although seeing Cressie at full-back shows how threadbare this squad is.
Sure, we could say 'it was one of those games' which we should have won - given the chances, hit post etc. But is it? I think today has been coming for some time. Christ, 10-man Scunny were a whisker away from snatching a point on Wednesday night.
Obviously Charlton are a cut above the rest of this division. And, given the points gained, so are 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. But not that far ahead of the rest. No team will lie down, we know that. But at least we should be absolutely prepared for each scenario.
I had an overwhelming feeling that, if we strolled out for the second half thinking the job was as good as done, we'd be in trouble.
This is where a manager earns his keep. He should have drilled it into them to keep the foot on the gas. Obviously he didn't.
I don't blame him for ending with 3 up front - a point today was next to useless. I don't particularly blame the ref. Lowton (and Williamson) should not have got involved in such childish behaviour which ended in a second red for Lowton. But, having established that the ref. was totally inconsistent, we should have used that to our advantage. Thrusting runs into their box which could well have resulted in a penalty. I'm sure Charlton would have.
