The Brentford Model

Brentford have a director of football with a great scouting network who sign unbelievable players for next to nothing. They are a model we should base ourselves on, but we'd be lucky to have money to pay scouts to travel outside Barnsley! If we had a director of football then we wouldn't have ended in this crap contract situation with Ndiaye, Berge and Jebbison. We are so poorly run when it comes to this side of the game and transfers. It's always excuse after excuse while everyone else gets the business done around us. I'm not sure the current guy in charge of player transfers and contracts is an upgrade on our Turry, who would receive a bid of £1.2mil for one of our players and sell them for £1mil. We're a joke. I'd love to see us emulate a club like Brentford.

Looking at the Prince's model for all his other clubs, he likes to let the players go and not replace them....

If we get £30mil for Ndiaye then Hecky will be lucky if he even sees £5mil of that money for players.

Probably already been spent on fleck and ozzy. Also To compensate the bogs on the kop will lose the annual clean.

I criticised Hecky for resigning those two, but we've all seen now that his hands were tied. With no money for new players he wouldn't have been able to replace them. Anyone available on a free would have higher wages. Hecky said he knows every player who's available on a free and yet we've only shown interest in Chris Francis and took too long in offering him a deal. Why no interest in other free signings, surely there was someone out there in world football who we could sign? If we'd have released Fleck and Ozzy then we'd start the season with Norwood, Berge and Slimane as the only senior midfielders. Hecky had no choice but to re-sign them as he clearly couldn't bring in anyone better for 50p a week, bus fare and a packet of crisps. Even then that's more than Fleck is worth.

That's what a shit show we've become.

At least if we do smash Derby's record then our value will plummet and it should easier to sell us to an owner who might give a toss!

Think you're spot on only other ones on the free market on our budget would want more than championship wages. Might aswel sign sharp back just so jebbison and Osula aren't completely confidence drained at this stage in their career.

Brentford have been very smart in recruitment for a long time it just shows how a club can succeed without paying big fees. In our case we have gone from good in the early Wilder years to a shopaholic with everything on the credit card
At this stage we are shopping in the bargain basement. If some go wrong at least they haven't cost much.

Ideally we cash in on Berge, Anel and Ndiaye. For £30M up and invest at least £20M in new signings. But if we did sell I expect the Prince to only give £5M to £10M with the rest going to prop up the club until he can get his valuation of the club.

Hecky is in a tight spot I reckon and it would take a full return of Brewster RND McBurnie and Bogle to give him options to choose from, even if they are limited. There seems to be little interest in our players so far so I don't expect all of 3 listed earlier to go. Any in the last year of their contracts just further complicates things and we then have the opposite of Brentford in not being able to cash in to our advantage.

Therein lies the problem. His valuation is fucking crazy.

Should we not decide whether we are a joke once this window and the next have closed ? So far the three signings don’t look far off the type that you long for.
We have recently been promoted three times and are in a better financial position than many of the top 40 clubs, so if that is running a joke club then I will stick with them.

Brentford scout based on a stats based system. For example if they were looking for a midfielder then they might rule out a high scoring one or one with lots of assists, as they cost too much money. Instead they look at pass completion and chances created. If a midfielder completes 85% of passes, sees more of the ball than a top player and has more minutes in possession, creates lets of chances that wasteful team mates don't put away, then they've found their man. Goals and assists wise he might not show much on paper, but the stats suggest with better finishers ahead of him he'll get the assists as they'll score the chances he creates. They then go watch the player and end up signing a bargain player who they later sell for big profits which fund their next transfer windows when they turn out as good as they hoped.

We never make a profit on players we buy. Who was our last one, Colin Kazim-Richards? Bought for £150k, sold for £1.2mil?

That was part of our downfall in our second season last time round. Who could we sell during the summer to help fund our summer? O'Connell, Baldock? That was about it. Villa sold Grealish. Leeds sold Phillips. We never seem to have these players. Now that we finally have one it looks like any fee received will likely dissappear and not fund a summer transfer window.

Ramsdale was our last profit, with the rest being academy prospects....like illiman.

I genuinely forgot about Ramsdale, though we didn't make a huge profit out of it. Certainly not significant to sign more players. We signed Anel and that was the following season.

If we're financially better than many of the top 40 clubs then why have we got no money to spend on transfers and wages? You're contradicting yourself with that one. If we're so financially better off then we wouldn't have been in an embargo in January, would we?

Think at the time they said we had to sell ramsdale to keep the other players, yet here we are with premier league money selling our best player.....

The state of solvency/financial stability in many clubs is dire. Just look at the situation Wolves are in.
We are now in a decent state having been promoted: we were not in January.
There is no evidence that we have “no money for transfers and wages”, just indications that we don’t have a great deal. Otherwise we would not have acquired two new players and a loan with the likelihood of more to follow

Hecky was told he had £20mil as his summer transfer budget. We've not spent even half of that but Hecky has come out and said it's all free transfers and loan signings from here. If you earn £100mil just for getting into the Premier League then where's the other £80mil.

If you have a squad of 25 players each on £20k per week, that would only be a wage bill of £26mil for one calendar year. So that's £46mil accounted for. Where's the other £54mil? Say we budgetted for each player on a two year contract with a 40% pay cut, the next year's wage bill would be £15.6mil. That now leaves £38.4mil unaccounted for.

Something doesn't add up.

I think the finances are a little more complex than that. Look at our last set of accounts or indeed any PL club’s accounts to see where the money goes.
We don’t know what Hecky was told and we don’t know how much he will spend in this window and next. Second guessing what he will do in the next 6 months doesn’t shed much light.
