'Memries' Ten years ago today United 2 Oldham 3

One of the more frustrating matches I've seen. United go two nil up, its all very comfortable against a poor Oldham team. Then poor defending and awful refereeing by Jon Moss turns the game round. We end up losing 3-2, with Harry Maguire sent off. It also has a knock on effect for the midweek match at Walsall, where we have a makeshift defence, with an unknown on loan Sunderland defender John Egan playing his first game for the club.
Oldham Athletic are a proud old club and I hope they stay in the league this season. If they do go down though I will allow myself a wry smile for their attitude that day!

We had no cover at CB that season & never brought anyone in the JTW , Maguire got suspended & Neil Collins was out on compassionate grounds so we played with 2 makeshift CBS & those two results Oldham & Walsall contributed towards the oinks pipping us to promotion sadly

We threw a lot of games away that season, this was one, Exeter home, Orient away and of course the pigs at home. We also had the Ched Evans debacle and from the time he was sentenced the team decided they didn't know how to play football without him- the ultimate bottle jobs.

Ad well as that the worse play-off final ever and possibly one of the worst games Wembley has ever seen.

Unbelievable game. 2 up at half time and cruising, then end up losing, two sent off, no recognised defenders left on the pitch at the end, and four strikers on. Genuinely nuts game.

And knackered the pitch in the process, it’s a pity it wasn’t called off due to the rain.

Goalkeeping errors cost us in all them games Pigs at home & Orient away ..Simonsen came out window cleaning on crosses and defence Sat do deep trying to protect him you could see it coming a mile off ..Exeter at home Long who was still young was thrown in at the deep end & I think it knocked his confidence in years to come

I hope Oldham stay in the league. One of my oldest mates is a die hard Oldham fan and they have a good bumming by shit owners in the past few years.

They'd lined up David Weir in January who was very close to signing but he chose a coaching role at Everton instead if I remember correctly. I thought he'd have been ideal that day. If I recall correctly the defence was Taylor-LJF-Maguire-Lowton, if they'd have had Weir he could have come in as the steadying influence at the centre with LJF going to his usual left back spot. We lost LJF that day with season ending injury.

I thought the ref was a disgrace and cost us the game that day. They'd pulled a goal back, then he sent Lowton off for chucking the ball to Lee Williamson before the restart of the game. One of their players had got involved in trying to get the ball back to the centre spot quicker but the ball was dead and it was our ball to restart so the Oldham player shouldn't have got involved. Then if I remember right Maguire got sent off late on in the game (was it in giving the pen away??)

We then had a scratch defence midweek at Walsall with all four of the usual defenders out. As one or two had said we defo needed a back up centre half that season, just as cover (a Martin Crainie type would have done), goalkeeper needed replacing and not signing Mark Duffy just before transfer deadline day was scandalous (we'd offered £40k they wanted £400k, we'd have got him for £250k), while the pigs signed that winger who went on to play for West Ham.
