Did you ever see Currie?

The segment from 2.21 to 4.00 is worth watching. Anyone who saw him knows that such apparent brilliance was simply routine and effortless for him.

I think Sirius is a bit harsh on Sabella who was excellent when he first arrived and could certainly have done with better players around him. His form went into a bit of a downward spiral after a while and we were probably lucky to get what we did from Leeds for him in the end.

But there's no comparison.

Yes,I was watching the blades before we signed TC,and was really suprised how quickly he developed, and was gutted when he left.
I even booked TC for a presentation evening,I was in charge of,he was an absolute gentleman, and had a really long chat with him about the Blades.
His only gripe about United was that they prevented him joining Man U,which was his dream !My point is that I think skillwise, they were on a par,and not much to choose on that level,ok Sabella was not here for that long, but while he was he was brilliant, and we should never forget that .

Sometimes I think comparing players abilities is a forlorn pastime (of which we are all guilty BTW). They are all good players to have made it through the massive filter system on the way to making it as a pro (even Dougie Brown :-))
However.... My take on AS & TC would be this, if we could parachute the peak versions of both players into the 2014 world cup I know which one would look the better player.... And he's already present in Brazil!

Having seen both, you're way off. Peak TC would stroll around a midfield spraying passes left and right, making Pirlo look like Nick Montgomery!

True, but he's sat on the bench - TC sat on the ball against Arsenal.

Saw both too mate and of course it is about opinions. Sometimes our tc bladeyness clouds judgement. ;)

Don't think so, as I said elsewhere, AS was a good player in a very poor team, whereas TC was a very good player in a good team. Now if we go the other way with this and put AS in that 70s team we might be judging things differently, but the stand out player would still be TC. A dribbler like AS would do well in the modern game, but someone with the passing range that TC had would be a godsend to England or any other team in this World Cup.

Good points all but I think Sabella is much more similar to today's players than TC is.

There were quite a few times when Sabella would chest a ball near the touchline and then use his thigh to get the ball high enough for him to do an overhead kick and the crossfield pass would accurately go straight to a team mate on the other side of the pitch which was fantastic to watch. I think whenever Sabella does that trick, we have one or two players prepared to intercept the ball on the other side of the pitch and our opponents would be caught by surprise

Agreed, but then again the modern dribblers (Robben, Joel Campbell, Messi, Ronaldo etc.) are all much better than Sabella ever was or could've been. The modern game, apart from maybe Pirlo, doesn't really have (due to the formations I'd say) the old type midfield schemer. But they do have forward thinking midfield players who look to attack the box and feed balls in and around the box and I think TC would be a master of that. He could dig when he needed to, was better in air than given credit for, and in his heyday quicker than you would think. I'd play him as a modern No.10, behind a front player.

You make excellent points SEB and provide a powerful argument for your case. I guess we are drifting away from my original criteria of them playing in this WC taking into account conditions etc and the better looking players have tended to be South American/ Latin.
Stick TC & AS on a 1970's gluepot on a cold January evening and my argument would be reversed.

Aye, I can see the argument. Mind you, I reckon TC saw himself as a bit of a latino, which is why he quite often got the lazy tag at the time. Actually, he just constantly wanted the ball at his feet and didn't see it was much of his concern when the opposition had it, that was what Hockey played for! :D

And despite our debate, TC still far and away best player I've seen in our colours.

There were two problems in the first 5 months of the 1970-71 season. One was thay Hodgy had lost confidence and form, the other was that TC was doing the tackling in the middle more than creating chances (Barlow was a clever midfielder but slow and not aggressive enough, the signing of Barnwell wasnt a good one as he was past it) so Harris signed Hope and Hockey (so that TC can be more creative)

I wasn't sure what you meant by Latino so I looked it up in the videos section of Google; not much football going on there, and not a TC-lookalike in sight.

In his overcoat, TC would still have been the better player

Official position is the best midfielder we ever had.

If we had a player who won two FA Cups, League Champions medal, captained England and was know as "The Prince of Halfbacks" surely he would be classed better than Currie.
And when he wasn't playing football he was scoring First Class cricket centuries.
