So what were the main tactical differences today compared to tuesday?

We had some .........

In brief, I would suggest that today we concentrated on our game, not on the other team.
We got the ball wide at every opportunity. Amazingly, the kitson / Porter pairing worked, wheras before its been a disaster. With Forte on the bench we had 2 strikers on the pitch and in the first 7 minutes we created more chances than in the last 7 home games, and I'm NOT exaggerating at all !!!! If Forte pulls on a red & white striped shirt again then somebody wants their bumps feeling !!!!
We created enough chances to win 7 games and all we were lacking was a quality striker. My personal hero, Keith Edwards, if fit, would have created a goalscoring record today.
Best home performance of the season, by a million miles, without any doubt at all. crowd responded and were FABULOUS, atmosphere was great again.
If we can play like that for the rest of the season we will only just miss out on automatic; pity we didnt make the change earlier. Sadly, Danny's lack of ability to break teams down at home has cost us promotion again and next season WILL be much more difficult because of the teams coming down. VERY MUCH a missed opportunity this year, which has been a truly crap division.

Definitely a bit of hoof but when it's aimed to the right areas and you have your target man actually standing where he's meant to for a change (Kitson!) then it works.

There was a distinct lack of passing it between Collins and Maguire which resulted in a much higher tempo. Notnearly as much going backwards with the first pass either. Porter was influential in keeping the tempo up by running the channels brilliantly.

I don't mind hoof when you have the aerial super powers of Porter.

Did both goals not come from McMahon crosses?

Are we finally getting the hang of wingplay?

The first commentary I have listened to where I wasn't bored out of my bonce.
Crowd sounded brilliant. Chances created, used the width, crosses in to the box. I you want Porter to score put it on his decking head. It's not rocket science.
Now I feel we can do something.
Still think Bournemouth will pip us for autos.

Still NOT going to Wembley - but I think we might do it this time.
Am I feckin stupid or what?

A bit harsh! If Morgan & Unsworth can have that effect on the 14 that played today, who's to say Jon Forte can't benefit from their apparent motivational qualities.
Maybe I'm in a minority who thinks Forte has more going for him than his last few performances suggest. Even Murphy looked up for it today (for 55 mins anyway), so if he can be inspired I'm sure JF can do it too.

So what were the main tactical differences today compared to tuesday?

We actually pressed the opposition in all areas of the pitch and they crumbled. As for when we had the ball, the wingers were hit early and we crossed the ball early as well, but not from too deep. It was more direct, more intense and the basics were done well.

Whether all of this was a significant change in tactics or just the players having their arses kicked I couldn't say. Also, Swindon were terrible for most of the first half, and we had the best of the officials' decisions.

If we maintain this and get some good fortune we'll be very close come the final game.

Main differences on tactics were:
  • much, much faster tempo
  • much more pressing and pressurising the opposition when they had the ball, everybody was much hungrier
  • ball played forward much faster - no sideways and backwards keep ball that has no purpose
  • ball played into channels
  • Balls played over the top and Swindon defenders turned to face their own goal
  • Midfield and defence 10 to 20 yards further forward
  • No rolling the ball out from the goal keeper
  • Fullbacks got forward. Full backs wanted the ball.
  • Free kicks whipped in with pace and at a much better angle
  • Corners and throw ins were much better, actually kept the ball a lot from our won throw ins
  • Balls crossed in early
  • More men in the box
If we had done the same all season we would already be champions. In the first 10 minutes we created more chances than in the last 4 home games. Swindon were lucky that didn't get a good hiding today.

This is true, although Swindon left plenty of room in behind to exploit. Even Porter got in a couple of times.

I bet poor old Forte was cursing his luck - the game was made for him today, but he blew his right to play last Tuesday....

Forte has never been, nor will he ever be a striker.
He cannot control a ball at pace, cannot shield a ball, cannot hold it up, cannot head the ball, cannot jump, cannot hit a barn door with a banjo, cannot play off another striker, has no awareness of his teammates positions, has no ability to make sensible runs off the ball ..............
Need I go on; he was NOT what we needed in the january window but he PROBABLY WAS cheap, which would suit McCabe.
Regrettably that decision has probably cost us promotion this year.

Obviously you don't rate him ;)

However, time will tell on your theories....

Agree, thought he was the most dangerous at Tranmere

Get off the fence man and tell us what you mean .

We pushed the full backs on which meant Doyle and McDonald didn't need to go backwards and it gave Flynn and Murphy more space. It's really not rocket science

Thought McMahon got forward well which made United a threat down the right the whole game. We were a lot more direct (fine when we are winning, and probably suits our players ability better).

Thought we still defended a bit too deep at times, but that was because we have little pace? Also, I think we pressed well as has been said above. That hurried the Swindon players into making mistakes, but overall it was a dramatic improvement. Maybe the players have got the message that now the manager has been sacked, they are next if we don't go up!
