Nice to see a ring of steel around the Sportsman as Port Vale fans ran wild at the other end of Bramall Lane. The 2nd time in 2 seasons that a lower division club has been allowed to take the piss, safe in the knowledge that it's a small home crowd mainly made up of families and diehards, whilst SYPD put their feet up in the station supping cup-a-soup (Bradford) or position themselves as far as possible from where the two sets of fans converge (today).

I walked down Bramall Lane with my 7 year old wondering where the feds could possibly be as various scuffles ensued and those from the land that time forgot bounced about like zebedee. I got my answer near John Street where they were (in a completely trouble free area) in huge numbers with super lightweight video cameras poised and ready. I actually heard one of them telling a colleague they should head towards the trouble to be met with the reply "but there's all this lot to get through".

Be nice if they put a little effort into keeping the Sportsman under constant surveillance and a little more time into stopping bother (on the rare occasion it actually occurs). It's not difficult surely, just have a think about where fans come into contact (and make sure you leave a few out 10 minutes after kick off in Sheffield derbies when the brave wendy lads march down the road fighting with windows!).

I avoided the lane after t game as I guessed there`d be trouble from those tossers from stoke today.

If they had brains they'd be Traffic Wardens

Walked the full length of Bramall Lane with my grandson after the match as Vale fans came out en masse and didn't see any trouble whatsover, and the police were visible in numbers, huge numbers actually

Did you come from the John Street end?

I came up from the John Street end, up as far as Harwood Street.

There was plenty of posturing and an atmosphere from just up from the Cricketers onwards.

Most of SYPD were further down near the Cricketers, armed with mini cameras, with a couple stood against the coaches part way up. Three or Four were out of action as they'd marched off a couple of chavs with a spliff on the go from a quarter of the way up John Street. The horses I'd seen pre-match were nowhere to be seen.

I could only assume that the ones part of the way up by the coaches weren't regulars around football, as it was clear as day a number of groups were on a knife edge and it was just waiting for one of them to make a proper move before it started en masse. The two SYPD stood oblivious, mainly looking at each other as they chatted away.

About 50/60 yards up from the Cricketers it started kicking off and just as it was starting to get "pwopper nawty" (e.g. mild posturing and a bit of windmilling) I ducked out of the middle and between two coaches. Having nipped up Harwood Street, I didn't pass the Railway, but at that time it was mainly Blades wandering down.

They got another huge portion of double bubble. Overtime is priority 1,2 and 3 for far too many coppers. Not too much else matters.....:)

the steward crew got involved again armed with their trusty yellow coats which protect them from lawbreaking. The Vale fans were only celebrating a goal when at least 3 steamed in throwing punches ,it wil be on cctv ,cant believe no one brings prosecutions against these 'hard men '.

Over the past few years The police seem more bothered about targeting blades than even considering the possibility that there may also be rogue groups of away fans. It's happened with Wednesday, millwall and Cardiff in the past few years.

With the nature of the way the game went and the numbers that Vale brought, there was a chance of trouble after the game.

It's never seemed too difficult to think how to deal with this. Get the majority of the police along Bramall lane.... all the way up to je james. Have the horses there ready. This isn't to intimidate, just place the police where hotspots could occur. The police are the ones that monitor the coaches and minibuses up Bramall lane.... And guess what they end up parked up almost as far as Je James when teams bring decent away followings.

Whilst the police can't be everywhere, they must have learnt lessons from the Wednesday ring of steel debacle, millwall running riot and Cardiff kicking off by the railway and the lion.... Police saw all those incidents, the Cardiff one in particular saw two wpc's on horseback isolated and doing a great job in stopping a real flashpoint.

Did you come from the John Street end?

From the Copthorne Hotel downwards, I was a little bit wary but honestly saw nothing, walked on the pavement straight past their buses and Vale fans hanging about, I was parked across from St mary's church

You clearly don't actually know any cops or you would know that 'double bubble' dissappeared a long time ago. On the basis that the first part of your post is utter horse shit, I would doubt the validity of the second part.

I don't know many (The father in Law's past 50 so he's not turned a spade for some years) , they're always at work. The point still holds, it's an overtime led mentality that has resisted real reform for decades.

Touched a nerve though eh, Sergeant?

:)

Not necessarily touched a nerve, more that I wished to point out the ignorance of facts. I do know many Cops and know that most would rather be enjoying their days off than having them cancelled to referee the lives of retards who should know better. You say that you don't know many Cops, then how do you know that their mentality is over time driven? Plus it is actually more cost effective to pay overtime which has to be paid on occassion, rather than pay for the cost of the equivalent staff to be employed full time to make up the numbers.

I do concede however that on match days, there are some who could be a little more pro active in stopping trouble before it happens. Too many cops and they get accused of overkill, too few and those that are on duty get exposed as ineffective.

First, let me be clear, they do a top job. That's not my point, for clarity.

I saw what my father in law got away with, stopping off at ours for hours whilst on overtime, with no priority on getting the job done. No closure meant more overtime. His wife, also a copper, did the gym in the middle of earning overtime.

My Dad was a Paramedic. He always commented on how the Police were obsessed by earning overtime. And the few coppers I know confirm this.

I think I'm on safe ground in suggesting that there's a problem in Policing with the attitude to overtime.

Go into any large firm where there is the opportunity to earn overtime and you will always find some that take the piss. That isn't endemic of the Police. To say that they are all actually obsessed on earning it is perhaps an embellishment.

Am I really arguing on the internet???

Also, like in any large firm, some will do a top job, sadly others will not.....................

You might call it arguing. I'd call it discussion ("Horse shit" aside), on a discussion board. Don't beat yourself up about it....:)

Last night was a similar attendance to the Vale match , after the match i walked 3/4 way round the ground , did not see one copper , maybe the overtime rates are not that good during the week , but thankfully i saw no trouble , as the fiver match brought lots of local Chavs out . Saw no Police all night but plenty of stewards , had we won it would have been hide your colors time for me i am afraid even though my size makes me rarely a target for the bullies .
