SYP & the policing of Bramall Lane

It was indeed. But the police don't hand out money on these cases unless they think they will lose.

I think it is more accurate that the Police pay out (or rather their insurers) on the basis that it would cost less than it would do to fight the case. I'm not saying that was, or was not the case here, just that such a policy is (or certainly was) in existence.

No it's not. As a public body the police are not subject to the same financial constraints as your average private Defendant. They have a policiy in fighting what they consider to be unmeritorious claims as (quite rightly) they don't want to be seen as a soft touch for compensation by anyone who has a run in with them. I am sure they consider that a better long term policy from the financial point of view.

As it happens non-London forces are far less likely to settle cases than the Met. Those forces seem often to take it as a personal affront that anyone should sue them and will fight even cases they are clearly going to lose.

Can I ask what the Barnsley fan had been doing to get himself arrested and handcuffed in the first place?

He was walking with other Barnsley fans to the match when someone pushed him. He protested in fruity language, turned round and saw it was a PC. He was promptly handcuffed and held against a wall. The dog randomly bit him as it walked past with its handler. The chap was then S27'd and released.

The handler failed to control the dog, which is I suspect why they settled.

Yes, dogs tend to do that and do not discriminate...hence why a few cops have suffered a bite

There is an account on the Fan website but you only have the fan's side of it

Thanks, I had only read the Yorkshire Post Article.
Reading between the lines it sounds like the police thought he was part of the leading group of trouble-makers doing the "taunting".
Presumably there will have been CCTV footage of the incident and/or the police filming it so if he'd done much wrong they would have used that in evidence.

The guy was a young lad who had never been in trouble with the police and was going the match with his dad. I have no problem whatsover accepting his account of events (and believe it or not my line of work makes you very cynical about what people tell you). If the police thought their account would stand up in court they would have told him to get lost.

I know of a lad that chucked a chicken drumstick at a passing car and hit a plod in the face allegedly. And they didn't catch him. That was near Bramall lane so it counts. If only the said plod had passed his fitness test?
Dipstick lobs drumstick. Knobhead should have been caught and given a real hiding.
Then sentenced.
Did the dork not realise he can cause death by doing that?
Silly c.nt.

I think he said the vehicle wasn't moving, at a set of traffic lights. Don't be to mad. He should be recognised for being a good shot.

Yes but the pigs should have got medical attention for the bloke as their dog bit him. Then we saw Millwall scum inside the lane breaking every ground regulation and being left unmolested.
Cockney trash.

Set of cluless wankers. Look at the way pigs attacked shirters behind kop last derby match unchallenged by plod. Also look at the way people were treated coming out of the Sportsman so many years back. All bullied at school.

I think that they have a tough job to do, like in every job there will be those less competent than others but on the whole my experience is that they do a good (thankless) job. It is easy to slag them off with sweeping generalisations such as yours.
Many officers are also spat at, punched, kicked, threatened and abused every week at football matches by so called fans. Does that mean that we are all mindless knobheads, just because we choose to spend Saturday afternoons watching football? I suppose that they deserve it for being CLUELESS wankers who all got bullied at school.

On another occasion I walked past a small group of police men and women hanging around on Bramall Lane. One of them was a stunning blonde. "Wow!" thought I , until she opened her mouth and a stream of Barrack room language came out. Never judge a book by its cover.

Ahhh Broomers you are old fashioned aren't you? I think that you will find that sort of thing is very appealing to a lot of the youf today.
I suspect if you looked under the covers there would have been a tat or two lurking.
Women in uniform, and foul mouthed to boot. Maybe it's what got Darren into his line of business in the first place?

There used to be (and maybe still is) a blonde PCSO who helped out with traffic down Bramall Lane on match days. If it's her I'm heartbroken. ;)

Are you old enough to be on this forum. Has mummy never told you not to throw your toys about...grow up boy. oops, nearly forgot the obligatory icon...:)

Take policing back 30 years, when there were sufficient cops to deal with the trouble makers. yes, they were mostly on overtime, weekend off or got up off nights. As personal stories seem to be the norm on here I'll give you my own. A recent home match...several so called United fans decided to smash up the seating. No police at all nearby and totally ignored by the stewards(who can blame them). 30 years ago the offenders would have been languishing in the cells as there would be dozens of cops in the ground. Dont blame the cops...blame the mindless thugs and yes, even those on here who thinks its clever to indulge in playground name calling. You know the ones...taunts such as "piggy" "sty" etc etc.

On what basis was the settlement. Not out of court settlement without admission of liability by any chance was it

Absolute classic - are you for real?

Just what they dish out aint it? What about the wanna be soldiers that hide behind the disguise of a riot uniform that throw out the odd kick punch and your supposed to lump it? You can't get their number as they don't show it.

Every home match at BDTBL - even when the away fans are known to be violent - they are let straight out onto Bramall Lane to mix with departing home fans, many of whom are women and kids.

Now the cynic in me says this is because when the inevitable ruck occurs, these brave boys in blue (sat round the corner in their meat wagon) can pile in and therefore justify their presence.

After all, what's a few smacked-up women and children when there's overtime involved?

Yeah, I must admit that I have lost count of the times that i've gone to matches and been minding my own business, only to be spat at, punched and called a cunt by a cop. In fact it must have happened so often that my memory is a little hazy to the point where I can't recall a single instance in 30 years of watching the Blades.
I'm not saying that people don't get clouted by the Police but if you behave yourself, don't act like a twat and gob off, then you generally don't get any grief yourself. I bet you are one of those people that harp on about the good old days when a friendly cop would give you a clip round the ear for misbehaving instead of locking you up. Only to find that when you are acting like a knob and get a clip, you bleat on about those cowardly bullies in blue.

On occassions I have witnessed some heavy handed behaviour by the cops, generally whilst attempting to control of a group of drunken fuckwits. Yes they get in wrong occassionally. If they aren't there then they are criticised for 'hiding round the corner'. If they are there in numbers then they are hammered for being too handed and for a massive overkill.

Don't want to have a cop in your face? Don't act like a cock.

Actually when I have seen away fans behaving like tw.ts the plod generally do nothing. Against Doncaster last season, two arseholes were in need of about 8 people to control them , escaping from stewards and all sorts. Same goes for Hull. When scum needs controlling, the old bill and the stewards seem rather inept.
