oldest club, floodlight first used at Bramall lane. And so on the 14th October Bramall Lane staged a what turned out to be unique football match - the first in the World to be played under floodlights. , Brian Deane scores the first premier league goal.

I will let you fill in the rest.

And my sisters partner used to live next to the pitch where the penalty kick was invented. Not at the same time though.

I think we were on the first floodlit match to be televised. It was away at Millwall in the early fifties. Would be convenient for the BBC I suppose. I remember they televised the second half and we had recently bought a tele. All the neighbours came round to watch and the first news was that Jimmy Hagan had been carried off in the first half with a knee injury. Can't remember the final result though.

Aren't we the first club in England to receive Saudi investment? Hardly a record I know, but I remember an article in the Daily Mail when it first happened who were clearly devastated a club such as ours had received Saudi investment before media darlings like West Ham etc.

Found this on line - "The official Sheffield United website claims that the 2nd half of a floodlit fixture played between the Blades & Milllwall at The Den in March 1954 was the first instance of televised floodlit football. However there is a reference online to the 2nd half of the first floodlit fixture at White Hart Lane between Spurs and Racing Club de Paris in September 1953 being televised."

I never realised floodlights were so controversial though - given we had first played under them in 1878. Apparently the FA banned floodlit football in August 1930. The FA ban remained in place until December 1950 although a month later they added a qualifying clause which stated that no competitive match could be played under lights without permission of the FA or the County FA and organisers of the competition.

It wasn't until June 1955 that the Football League changed its rules to allow League matches to be played under lights, the first match being at Fratton Park on Wednesday 22nd February 1956 when Portsmouth entertained Newcastle in a First Division fixture. The Football League Cup - started in 1960 - was conceived as the Football League Floodlight Cup. The last club to play in the Football League without floodlights were Chesterfield - 18th October 1967.

good article on history of floodlights at http://twohundredpercent.net/?p=2409

It would take time to check, but I suspect that our current run of seven straight domestic cup semi final defeats is a record.

Interesting, I never knew about this. Will it be in Complete Records book?

Bramall Lane is dripping in history. I was recently sent a list for an arty project I'm about to embark on and its pretty impressive. BDTBL has hosted cricket, bowls, basketball, baseball, boxing, rugby, lacrosse and tennis, all at the highest levels.

The record for the most tears to be shed in one place wasnt there, suprisingly! :)
