My own vintage cricket story, I didn't even play. 1985 U15s City final. On a Saturday 1.00pm start. Myself and our no.5 batsmen got arrested for shoplifting in HMV beforehand. Michael Old nephew of Chris, son of Alan was playing for us so they didn't need us anyway.....

I love these kind of stories. Here is my own "related to a Yorkshire Legend" tale, regarding Alan Hampshire, brother of Jack. I have written it up this week and put it on Sheffield University Staff CC's Facebook Page, not that they seem overly bothered by a little piece of their history, so everybody, feel free to go along and give it some love!

Barry Eke. That is a name from the past. He made Geoff Boycott look like Harry Brooks. My dad used to play for Bankers. Ps I think that Uni Staff group is a private one.

When did your dad play for Bankers? Barry was our anchor in the Second XI. I played for the juniors from 1982-1984, and for the second XI from 1984-1988, until I moved away from Sheffield. I made the odd appearance for the 1st XI but only when they were really low on numbers and I was hopelessly out of my depth! I was also a Midweek Alliance regular.

Think it will have been late 80s I think. He played with Firvale as well. I can't remember SYP having a team in the Midweek Alliance but I do remember there was a team who played on the Niagra. I think peak was about 85/86 when we had about 60 clubs. There's 20 now.

The SYP/SUS game was in a different midweek league which probably wasn't called the Midweek Alliance. It was different in that the games were 42 or 44 6-ball overs a side and started in the afternoon, meaning that in order to play, you had to have an afternoon off work.

The Sheffield Bankers Midweek Team played in a league after work where the matches were all 20 8-ball overs a side. We were in a division well below Collegiate's midweek team, but we drew them in the Midweek Alliance Knockout Cup. We played it on our home pitch (the top one above Collegiate's pitch, now houses I understand (how dare they? I scored 55 not out on that wicket!)) and Jacob Bethell's dad smacked us all over Abbeydale Park.

That was a Thursday afternoon league, the Sime League. It was developed originally for early closing day many years ago!
