McCabe certianly encourages us to renew our season tickets with todays retoric.

"Steadily Reduce the annual player wage bill"

"The playing squad has been strengthened in several key areas to accomodate our objectives for this season"

"The management of the team has to be achieved within budget"

"Let's hope United get the rub of the green"

These are not the comments of a chairman with ambition.

The bit about strengthening the squad ruins some pretty decent comments for me

"These are not the comments of a chairman with ambition."

... but they are the comments from a Chairman who would appear to have the ambition for the club to remain solvent whilst many of those around us are up to their necks in debt.

Hard to disagree, but does it really give us any advantage on the pitch?

I have no idea how Wendy are still in business but the bank hasn't pulled the plug. They can't spend any money but if we want to maintain low debt in CCC, neither can we.

Obviously I'd rather us have no debt than 30m and it is very impressive but in terms of winning promotion I don't think it helps and I don't see any otehr clubs going out of business.

to be fair, it's not a big ask to reduce the wagebill and improve the playing squad. There are some extremely average players at United earning some extremely large wages. I'd hazard a guess that the loss of Speed and Naysmith will release approaching £2M per year.

Even stalwarts like Monty and Morgan will be looking at huge reductions when there contracts are up, IMHO.

Given a £10M wagebill, and time, a decent manager could produce a contending side.

Hey up Micalijo you once said i should be a QC or something like that. dont know if you'll like this but as I read this the hidden meaning is this - I think

Our objective this season to lower the wage bill- Yes
the 'strengthened' bit is getting rid of high earners in key areas of the squad -yes
Replacing them with players who earn less, that is not trying to strengthen the squad or weaken the squad.
It is priority to accomomdate the objective Which is a lot easier to guarantee than promotion.
I think that is right?

Very true - there is no reason at all why we can't break even and produce a very competitive side. Unfortunately, Blackwell does not seem to believe this.

You know what Boo, by jove, I think you have got it! Great stuff. I genuinely thank you for this translation because McCabe talks a different language to me. It does make sense when you put it like that.

I'm still a little disappointed that McCabe used the strengthening line. It's clear how it will be interpreted, and clear we haven't strengthened in a way that is tangible to 95% of fans.

is this another nudge nudge wink wink, or based on anything of substance?

Is it a line from Yes Minister?

Give over Beighton just puts 2 and 2 together and gets 5.

Remember he claimed a McCabe was selling up, not just an investment deal which is more likely.

It's a very fine line though.

For example, in recent years, Burnley have at the very least twice actively circulated to other clubs that every single player is up for sale. They were very very close to dissapeering completely if certain information is to be believed, yet they managed to sneak up and live to fight another day.

We might say we sell all of our assets, thats another discussion (I don't think we do btw :D), but we've never been even close to doing anything as drastic as that under McCabes stewardship, yet I think we've had a fairly exciting time of it (yet always being the bridesmaids as normal!).

I think I'd take knowing the Blades are going to stay for years to come, above risking it all to that extent... That's just my personal preference though, might change if I felt I had less years left to see the blades achieve something :D

Gi ower everybody knows 2 n 2 is 3 ........

We have sold our best player (Jags, Beattie, Naughton) 3 times in 2 years.

We have also offloaded 2 of our best young players in the last 4 months (Walker, Cotterill).

It is 100% certain that one of our best remaining defenders (Kilgallon) will not be a Blades player by 1 February.

We are now stripped so bare of quality that you would struggle to indentify who our best player actually is.

With the exception of Jamie Ward, who will go at the end of the season at the latest if we do not get promoted (ha!), we will have disposed of every single one of our very good or promising players by 1 February. Every single one.

That is asset stripping, and it is disgraceful.

"The playing squad has been strengthened in several key areas to accomodate our objectives for this season"

This is garbage of the highest order.

Our goalkeepers are worse
The defence is much worse
The midfield is, at best, no better or worse
The forward line is worse
