Bearing in mind all the talk of "Speed can't get this team playing etc" I just wondered;

As first team coach (and Sam as Asst Manager) do you think that Blackwell sought his opinion on new recruits whom he would then be responsible to coach? Or did Blackwell just go ahead and buy who he wanted while Speed sat there and thought "Well he's no bloody good".

Surely the coaching staff are a team and decisions like recruitment are discussed and agreed. The only exception I can think of would be where the manager has worked with someone before and is adament they are signed (Cresswell?).

Speed's signing of Jean Calve on loan after Blackwell released him following a trial period suggests the coach's opinion was somewhat marginalised for better or worse.

Alternatively it suggests that Blackwell was telling the truth when he said he'd love to sign Calve but couldn't afford his wages. The fact he eventually did sign could either be due to Calve reducing his wage demands or Speed being backed with funds that Blackwell had been denied.

I would add that the common theory seems to be that Speed secretly doesn't rate the likes of Morgan, Quinn, Montgomery and Creswell because they don't fit in with his plans to play the beautiful game. In actual fact, he's repeatedly stated how highly he rates them and included them in every matchday squad he's picked. If he really wanted to offload players he could send them out on loan. The fact he hasn't done suggests he might actually think they're ok.

At the moment he is struggling to find alternatives is he not?

It suggests that they are all that he has got right now. The test on whether Speed rates them will be next summer. If he doesn't rate them, they'll be on their way and replacements will be coming in.
