I have to once again question Cloughs summer signings. I did think that when he made a few early signings he was doing the right thing getting them settled ready for a full pre season, I did however start to wonder during pre season about the quality he had brought in. At the end of last season we looked really good, settled and enjoying football although still lacking a good centre forward. I personally thought if we can get Coady, brayford and a centre forward like higdon looks then we'd cracked it. I must however be missing something, your not telling me that if we had offered 375k for Coady like Liverpool must have wanted than he wouldn't have jumped at the chance to come back? We apparently have money to spend so why not. The brayford situation is out of our hands and there is nothing we can do so all we needed was a replacement, maybe Kieron freeman? Again a player not needing to settle in, familiar with Clough and his style not brayford but steady. We lost Maguire but we knew that was happening so replace him. After that we need a few more but not much, instead we go and get unproven, average, squad filling players who could end up frozen out.
JCR is past it for a winger got one trick will end up not making the bench soon, McNulty just doesn't look good enough simple as again could end up not even on the bench or out on loan if we get a striker in on loan, Basham no better than Doyle but not half the player Coady was, Butler looks slow not sure why he wasn't in the squad but didn't see the need to sign him, Alcock looks ok not sure he is a centre half but also not sure he will give you what you need at full back, McGahey I think it is asking to much throwing him in a the deep end like that, a few bad games could really knock a young lads confidence.
As for the rest, Davies was here last year and I think could do well in a 5 man midfield, Higdon looks good IMO and will get goals with service, Reed has come through the youth ranks looks good but would benefit from an old head next to him, Porter signed a new deal not sure why it was offered as today proved we'll need some injuries before he plays unfair IMO and would have rather he had come on than MCNulty.
I just can not get my head round these signings, I think we need at least 2 more quality players this time and we may have a chance. I don't know if Clough is trying to keep in the good books by not spending in case he fails but something isn't quite right as we are not talking a lot of money for the likes of Coady. Clough said we are a team in transition and is not sure why we are favourites but that team he has assembled won't be good enough and I will be gobsmacked if it is. If we don't go up this season we won't for a long time and will stand little chance of attracting good players, crowds will drop and we will start losing a lot of Money week in week out. I don't want to sound all doom and gloom after one game but this league is here for the taking this season and we can not afford another season in here after this. It is plainly obvious what we need and with just one game gone we have plenty of time to sort it out.
