But I wish we had the equivalent of a Connor Wickham on our bench for Wembley.

Only because you have brought order and purpose to SUFC for the first time since the Bassett years, do I state this as a "wish" rather than a criticism, and may it forever be the case.

its not like we've ever turned up to a Wembley match without a goalscorer and failed to score before...............

Let me explain.

I'm not a slasher, far from it. I never understood the 4-5-1 with a slow midfielder up top, but the football was much better. The results were far better too and that helps.

What I don't understand is whether this is your doctrine, because Derby never played it. And if it is not your doctrine, why oh why have you not got a couple of strikers in for Wembley. On the day there has to be a Plan B, in fact I try to understand F F P Rules and none tell me why you could not get a strike force in for the run in and for Wembley in particular, after all this extra income.

If you intend to play 4-5-1 forever I accept that, but the "1" needs to be mobile, committed and score goals, Baxter is not; Porter is certainly not, and we have nobody else in the cup.

F F P Rules were well covered after this cup run. You've signed umpteen full backs and midfielders but no strikers to speak of. Great shame, but carry on I love you to bits.

We've been to Wembley with no striker and no Plan A the last two times so you are a distinct improvement.

Perhaps the Wickham analogy was too much for some. Fact is he has rescued Wendy's season in a month or so. There could have been at least one other.

I think Clough's only stinker was Paynter, which he seemed to acknowledge pretty quickly.

He couldn't have foreseen the run we were about to go on, and just signed any striker who was available at the time. Now we have our 5 loans maxed out and with little room on budget and FFP. I don't doubt for one minute that Clough would sign a striker if he could. I also believe there is an element of loyalty to the players who have got us through this cup run, which I can also understand.

He hadn't been able to get the one(s) he wants. He's not prepared to settle for second best, as he sees it.

There will be new strikers here next season, I don't doubt.

the fact you chose Whickham , if anything proves one thing , the absolute dearth of available strikers
heres a lad who has 1 goal in 34 sunderland starts , and your offering him up as an alternative

chris porter scored 28 in 66 games at oldham
whickham had a burst of goals at wednesday
got found wanting again at leeds

you could argue , porter has more chance of scoring as he has scored more at every club hes been with
whickhams done it once

Did tha see Conners pathetic performance toneet ffs ! He wa wendy lol Out o his depth & shite !!! utb In other words Pathetic !

I agree with most views on here some very comical but ill tell you what wickham would be lethal in our league,i went to watch england u21s at bdtbl and he played very well ,yes he was shite tonight but to say hes worse than porter like someone has said is bullshit ,i think some of our fans forget what league we are actually in and why we are in ito_O:rolleyes:

We've already proven that our maximum level is good enough to beat Premiership sides. But the lack of attacking additions has meant that it's been too hard for us to keep the winning run, which was necessary to make the play offs.

Thus it's the league form that's suffered from the lack of an extra striker and a winger. It is just not possible to get a thin squad performing to the maximum of their ability every tuesday and saturday for three months.

The semi final will be at the back of the players' minds and I won't be too disappointed if we don't do great in the next three league games. The cup is now our focus, which Clough has also confirmed:

Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"It's not often you can say this but we are focusing on the FA Cup now and we won't be risking anyone before Wembley.
"To play eight games between a quarter-final and a semi-final is a lot to ask and I think our midfielders and attackers have started to feel that.
"I think we need to add three or four quality players to our group before next season if we are going to challenge and I think a striker is up there.
"It's a good measure for us to see how far we've come and where we've got to get to for next season."

Hmmm - interesting haircut as well. In my young day, he would have been called "distinctly suspect"..........
