Simmonsen got us the point v Coventry at the weekend with a pretty decent display, but last week on the way back from the Villa match, me and my mate were talking about Simmo and his clangers that he is prone to drop. He can be unreliable and questions have been asked weather the defense have confidence in him, now I have no idea how much he is worth and how much he commands each week, but is he worth the money?

Me and friend agreed that we would both try to lure another keeper in the summer, but only managed a few suggestions as to who would be adequate enough, we had:

Speroni (Palace)
Lonergan (PNE)
Lewis (P'boro)

Would any of these suggestions be a step up from Simmo and possibly be cheaper options?

Or does anyone think that Simmo is safe enough to be our first choice for a few years now?

Roy Carroll, previously of Man U is looking to move back from Odense Denmark to UK. He has been a top keeper out here and worth a shout if his salary is realistic.

also previous of Derby County? I'm not so sure on Carroll, older than Simmo, and I don't seem to have too many decent memories of him, the Spurs goal that never was always springs to mind. Carroll has been around, played Champions League, would you go for him over a younger keeper with potential?

and I just realised I've spent Simonsen wrong. My bad.

Speroni would be my choice, purely as we won't be able to afford Joe Lewis, but I have mixed feelings on Lonergan, if PNE go down I'm quite sure he'd jump ship, but he hasn't looked great this season IMO.

We cant afford any of those keepers so forget every name on that list. If United do sign another one, it will be from the lower leagues or an older one on a free. Simmo will most likely have to do for now, but I have been far from convinced by him. Well done to him for a good performance on Saturday though, lets hope he can keep it up.

Rob Burch? Used to see him from time to time at Sincil Bank, not kept such an eye on him since his move to Notts County. Blackwell was having a look at him a few years ago. Lower league, cheap, potential.

Would Speroni really be more expensive than Simmo in terms of wages per week? If we were to stay up and Palace go down, the may listen to offers?

How were you going to do that, tell them we were about to appoint a Communications Manager ;)

You're right - he's had a shocker, albeit in a poor team. A very promising player but can he recover that potential?

I'm not sure he did so well at Derby. A Derby fan I know was glad to get rid of him.

I don't really think we need a new keeper anyway. Simmo has made mistakes, but then you'd arguably not be the most confident person either with Nosworthy in front of you.

Agree. Simmo is decent with a decent defense in front of him, however, I remember him being more commanding in his 6 yard box when at Stoke.
Simmo was excellent on Saturday and put in the kind of performance that got him noticed and into Premiership sides.
Let's not kid ourselves though that we defended that well at the Ricoh - you only have to look at the corner count and the shot tally to see that.
Simmo's form and confidense this season may have taken a downward turn given the shit in front of him so if his special display at the weekend can instill confidense in the youngsters in front of him then we might be onto better things. Thought Lowry looked good for the most part but Mattock was well short opf any match fitness or sharpness, however, to be fair to the lad he did not give up trying.
We were very narrow on Saturday and could not string more than two passes in a row for 99% of the time. Also neither full back did much going forward - not sure if that was the instruction or the way these two operate but they appeared to be very static.

What about Alex Smithies from Huddersfield. He'll move on from them soon.

smithies is another good option. i don't mean to demand simmo steps down, far from it. but we need some insurance? or a young development keeper for the future, (as i don't see aksalu being given a chance) and he must be on higher wages than most.

But Simo's magic, y' know...

Seriously though, I thought he was excellent when on loan, then more mixed since we bought him. He deserves at least the rest of the season to improve his consistency. If he has a good second half to the season, stick with him. We can't afford guaranteed excellence.

I reckon by the end of the season, whilst we may not be ecstatic, we'll be saying that the goalkeeper position is not the priority. Funds better spend elsewhere.

To be fair, no goalkeeper is 100% consistent and a dodgy defence will have a negative effect on even the best. Assuming these two new players are the fix the defence needs, then lets see how he performs from now on before we start judging him.

I have gone on record in previous threads that I have concerns about Simmo's consistancy but must commend him for the point winning performance against Coventry.. I genuinely believe that Simmo has almost the full range of goalkeeping abilities (shot stopping, taking crosses, bravery, good reflexes etc) but sometimes lacks concentration and he looks to kick it long too often when a ball rolled out to players would be more beneficial. I do hope that he can maintain this latest form under the guidance of Mickey Adams. There is no reason why Micky's enthusiasm can't rub off on Simmo like any other player. Good luck Simmo.

If he can't maintain his current form then Speroni would be my first choice of the Championship keepers but would keep an eye out for a cheeky bid for the likes of Brad Fridel or Mark Swartzer who, despite being quality keepers, must be approching the end of their Premiership careers

Tomlinson from Vale must be nailed on for the Summer I would have thought.

what's he like? never seen or heard anything about him.

I'm fully behind Simmo, and agree that he may have everything previously listed to make a decent keeper (bar penalty saves, how many have we conceded this season? has he got near ANY of them?)

I was just wondering what opinions would be on a successor and if we may need one. I hope that he can keep up the good form and recapture the form he had while on loan last season. I just get a bit of a nail biting moment when I watch him. As said before, full credit for the Cov game.

Have a look at last weeks goals , if it was him in net he let a pearler in.

v Crewe? first goal he lets in is a bit of a shocker isn't it?!! held well at the end. PV second best defensive record in the league before that game according to the commentator. What does that say about the keeper? or more about who is in front of him and how they work together?

or having watched Lincoln City a bit over the last few years...does it say more about the finishing quality in League 2? ;)
