I realised today, I don't know any stories about United and the Second World War. Were any of our pre war players killed or seriously injured in the war? And did any other our post war players have stories about their time fighting in the war?

Joe Carr, a pre-War first teamer, was killed at Dunkirk.

My own father who is 97 is a D Day veteran, & is a link to the past, I shall see him later today to have a drink & remember those he knew who never returned.

He was 2 when in 1925 the FA Cup Final was contested by Sheffield United and Cardiff City at Wembley Stadium. We won won by a single goal, scored by Fred Tunstall. Not that he remembers it!

I have held the unexploded bomb that was dropped on the john street stand. It was at the euro 96 expo museum at kelham island. The luftwaffe made a mess of our ground.

Loved that exhibition- but for the life of me I can't remember the UXB bit!

BDTBL obviously wasn't the only ground to be hit badly- Old Trafford was too, and there was a rumour flying round when Uwe Rosler signed for Citeh that his grandad had been one of the bombers!

There was a City chant at the time to the tune of 'Knees up Mother Brown' 'Who bombed Old Trafford? Uwe's grandad, Uwe's grandad'. Uwe Rosler himself actually posed in a t-shirt saying 'Uwe' s grandad bombed Old Trafford'.
But I thought it was just a daft chant. I don't think anyone seriously believed it.

My Nan's brother (my great uncle) was in the RAF during WWII and was shot down over north-eastern France in Feb 1944. From what I've been told two lost their lives (including my great uncle) and two survived. He was buried in the village where he was shot down and he even has a road named after him. I have two or three letters of his that he sent back (from the RAF base) to another one of my nan's sisters. In one of the letters he mentions a United cup victory, that I guess must have been in the War Cup.

If you ever have a chance to visit the village, it can be well worth it. The village my great-uncle is buried in marks the anniversary each year with a moving ceremony, followed by a long boozy lunch. We went a few years ago, and were treated like returning heroes, and there were 2 people attending who witnessed the crash, one of whom took photos of the funeral. As I say, a moving experience, and the only time I have ever eaten frogs legs!

Joe Carr was my mums cousin! She would often chat about him being in Sheffield United 🥰
Any anecdotes?
If so, I would, as I am sure many on here would, like to listen to them.
Ta, in advance.

Blades topped the league when ww2 stopped it. Known pattern ?
