I think the problem with Sander is that he isn't aware where his own strengths lie. He's been brought up as a neat and tidy holding midfield player and would like to be playing in the centre of our midfield (a Michael Carrick type if you will).
However us fans have seen that he is far more effective in a more advanced role when carrying the ball forward and dragging opposition players out of position. He's also much stronger than his nice guy nesh nature would suggest and when he does run with the ball, the opposition can't handle his strength and physicality.
What's frustrating is that us fans only see this side of his game in fleeting moments, so when he does opt for the simple sideways pass or fails to carry on with a forward run it can be bloody annoying.
What muddies the water further is that if you watch our highlights, it's often the neat and tidy side of Sander's game that leads to chance creation - a little clever pass here, a an intelligent run to create space there. But as the cliche goes, a lot of this is the unseen work that's not always obvious when watching the game in real time.
