Former Blades captain Cec Coldwell passed away in his sleep at the weekend, aged 79.

Locally born Coldwell was a solid, no nonsense right-back who joined United from Norton Woodseats and went on to clock up over 600 appearances between 1951-66.

He will be forever synonomous with team-mates Alan Hodgkinson, Graham Shaw, Joe Shaw, Brian Richardson and Gerry Summers for forming a defence that oozed class and reliability in gaining promotion to the top flight in 1961.

Upon retirement he joined the coaching staff and twice temporarily took over the managerial reins in the mid 1970s

What a sad loss. Superbly loyal Blade who was involved at BDTBL for years and years as a player, coach, assistant manager and stand-in manager. Spoke to him on several occasions, always had time to talk as long as it was about football :)

Deepest condolences to his family!

Another sad loss from the Blades family.

Cec Coldwell was one of the finest that Sheffield United have ever had.

R.I.P. Cec, and my sympathy to his family.

Cec was indeed a great Blade.

I worked on his car a couple of times in the late 70's and we always a good chat about the Blades.

R.I.P. Cec.
