I don’t normally post Wednesday things but a very dear friend Simon Hughes life long friend lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Although opposite sides rivalry enhanced our friendship.
Simon passed away in St Ives his adopted home but often travelled to watch his team. I will miss him

Condolences OTB, I come from a split Blades - Owls family and have a fantastic group of friends who meet up often and annually take an weekend trip abroad, equally split between Blades, Owls and Millers. It's always great banter, always with good humoured digs, and we're great friends. We lost one brilliant member of our crowd a couple of years ago (who just happened to be Neil Warnocks nephew!?!)
I feel you pain.

Thoughts are with you.

I’ve got plenty of Wednesdayite mates, essentially they are all great people, just unfortunate enough to have a honking taste in football.

Last summer I went to the funerals of two Wednesdayites. One an old school friend who died from long cancer and was the same age as me, and the other I played Sunday league football with in the 1990s who got killed by one of our own in the Bessemer last summer.

Did you play for the White Bear ?

I don’t want to get onto dodgy terrority but what was the outcome of the Bessemer incident. Did they ever arrest anyone for it.

You may not know either but seeing as he was a mate of yours I thought I’d ask as I don’t remember seeing any outcome

Yeah, a young lad got convicted of manslaughter for it.

Sad news, and sad for your loss.

Choice of footy team is merely one little part of a person’s life, and certainly doesn’t or shouldn’t come into play when deciding on friendships, no more than would taste in music or literature. As you say, it often enhances the friendship either with opportunities to have a laugh at one another’s expense of jointly bemoan the current state of affairs.

Sorry for the loss of your friend, as others have said weve all got family / friends who support the other lot , most are good people who we happy to have in our lives, supporting the other team is just good for banter and friendly debate and i for one am glad we have rivals that we can associate with as long as there worse than us

Remember the sheffield derby a good 20 years ago . Some wendies died I'm sure in a car crash and blades took a banner to hilsbourgh of respect and maintained total silence

Sorry to hear about your loss pal. My best mate is a Wednesday fan, and he's a good lad. Rivalries get put to one side on these sad occasions

Rest in peace to your mate. Losing friendships to that horrible disease is a distraught assault to many.

RIP to your mate. Makes you realise its just 22 people kicking a bag of wind about.

One of my best and oldest mates is an Owl. So was my Dad.

We all have mates and often relatives who support Wednesday, it’s the banter that this generates that makes the rivalry in Sheffield football so special.

Sorry for your loss mate. Rest in peace Simon.

Sorry for your loss.

RIP Simon

Thanks, not something to dwell on but heard they were pushing for manslaughter (rather than murder) but didn’t keep tabs on the story after that
Think he got 9 years 2 years suspended don’t know how it works but he’s a complete little dickhead who deserves everything he gets but it couldn’t be murder it wasn’t intentional to kill the Wednesday fan. Just a coked up little chav who wants to impress his peers and now his life along with the victim and victims family are ruined. Should throw key away imo. RIP to Simon. Cancers disgusting

Sorry to hear this

My dad and his 3 brothers were Wednesday fanatics, my son in law and my two grandchildren are Wednesday supporters too .

Rivalries and good humoured banter is what sets us apart from other footballing cities .

I used to go to Hillsboro with my
dad and he used to come with me to the Lane .

RIP
